High Tea is a great way to spend a few hours with a group of friends in a wonderful building. The chicken and walnut sandwiches were particularly splendid, and the scones fantastic. The service seemed a bit unwilling to bring more of anything, and sort of seemed resentful that we had stayed a few hours, despite the fact there were plenty of free tables! But overall a very pleasant experience.
Ambience here is probably better when it is full. I went on a rainy Monday afternoon. It is a a pretty unfriendly room. Groups of armchairs make a welcoming sight but there are not enough of them. Part of the room was off bounds so I got the feeling that when business levels are low they can't be bothered to present the whole room.
I was shown to a high table and although service was attentive, glancing at their watches when I arrived at 4 pm did not make me feel welcome. Setting up and moving tables around for an evening function when I was just being served was off putting. Having said that the tea was very nice, the scone excellent and sandwiches very tasty. I wished that I had gone with a crowd so I was not so aware of the staff focus on the next session. Making solo guests feel at ease is a skill more establishments need to master.
Went here for lunch on Friday afternoon reserved for three people. The service was horrible, one of us did not get a plate or a fork and knife, we had to ask for it!
Secondly, In my opinion the food here is absolutely appalling, it just goes to show that the kitchen staff does not have a clue about taste, they probably have not tried every dish on the menu. The food looks presentable but tastes very bland.
I had a goat cheese tart, it was a tart that was served warm with nothing but a layer of walnut on the bottom and then melted goats cheese on top and some beetroot scattered all over the plate, the flavours did not mix well at all!. I think even vegetarians deserve better than this! My friend ordered a risotto and she got some froth on the side of her meal, it looked foul!, apparently from what I read it's normal to be served froth on the side!
All on all, never going back, not recommending it to anyone either, an absolutely over-rated place, Where's Gordon when you need him I tell you?!
Was pleasantly surprised with the calibre of dishes during a recent lunch. I would argue that my fish was as good here as any other seafood restaurant in Sydney. The decor and ambience have improved significantly since the refurb, I would definitely return.
My aunty and I took my nan here for a 80th birthday high tea celebration. The overall guest greeting and seating procedure needs to be worked on by staff, however, once seated our waiter was friendly and attentive. I had pre arranged upon booking for sparklers or candles to acknowledge my nans birthday, when our platter came out the little "birthday" extra had been forgotten, nor was it mentioned by our waiter until I quietly reminded him.
This oversight was quickly rectified and a good time was had by all. We ordered the French Champagne high tea, lots of variety for your tea selection and the finger food and champagne were better then expected.
In a nutshell, this place is all about big plates with small servings of ordinary food. The entrée I had was four or five pieces of some kind of ravioli like pasta doused with a white frothy insipid sauce (similar in appearance to washing up suds), whose flavour could best be described as “nothingness”. Mains consisted of some small slices of beefsteak, which though pink in the middle, evidently lacked any sort of marbling and consequently ended up being dry in texture. Sleep inducing boredom!
I took my Nan and sister here for our annual post Christmas high tea (we usually visit the Hyatt in Canberra). I had booked over 2 weeks prior, but when we arrived, the reception was shoddy -nobody even offered to assist my Nan with her walker or up the stairs etc.
We were seated, then waited a good 10-15 minutes to order, and then our food and drinks arrived mostly together over 20 minutes later. The staff were completely unobservant, almost every diner in the place had to physically get up and drag one of them over to serve.
When the food did arrive, we had no place settings, cutlery, napkins or anything. I was really disappointed, as I had booked, and some of the tables were set. I was really anticipating the gluten free afternoon tea, which was lovely in the end, but the savoury portions arrived completely Frozen. This was rectified, but I didn't really feel completely happy with their unapologetic response.
What an absolute pity. We were pretty happy with the size / value of the portions (I have paid more for less at another hotel in the city), and the atmosphere is just gorgeous, what a pity that the terrible service let it down so much!
A fantastic time was had by all when we had lunch at The Tea Room! Our waitress was not only professional, but was an extremely engaging woman who had us all in excellent sprirts. The food was fantastic, give my regards to the chef for producing such a superb steak. The only downside, the amount of people in the room itself. Otherwise I highly recommend this restaurant.
Took my mum here for tea. Very charming and considerate waiter, took our order and the tea stand arrived soon after. Yes the portions are small and the sandwiches fillings are not very inventive, however, the scones are fabulous.
It is expensive but it is a lovely few hours in nice surroundings.
We had high expectations going to The Tea Room, it was an afternoon out with my sister and mum. The food came out about 20 minutes after our tea and coffee, by which time we had drunk most of our beverages as they were getting cold. The food was average, nothing to rave on about with tiny portions of sandwiches and cakes. Enjoyed the scone though. We did get some sympathy from our waitress regarding the late arrival of our food, but won't be going back again anytime soon.
