Overview
Tamana's On Top brings Bollywood to Newtown taking you to the next level of Indian food and entertainment. As you walk up the stairs, the modern decor takes your breath away. Bollywood film songs play on the plasma screens with Bollywood dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. Tamana's On Top provides a wide range of delicacies from the north to the south of India including seafood.
We were a party of 3 and we were very disappointed with the food after reading the reviews here at eatability. Our shared entre was delicious but our mains of lamb shank and duck curry were not. The duck was over cooked and rubbery while the lamb shank was nothing but small bones and no meat or flavour.
Went on Friday evening, had booked but given the times did not need to, plenty of seating. Had the 'On Top' mixed entree platter, my partner commenting that one of the lamb chops was really chewy & tough - mine was fine. Then shared the Goan prawn curry along with the veal curry from the Chefs menu. Both of us loved the veal dish, I was a bit 'so so' on the prawn curry, whilst my partner loved it. I just thought it was a touch 'gritty' and bland, but truly, the veal was superb.
A real nice aspect to the place was the service from one particular waiter - wonderful young guy, who did his job to perfection. Certainly would go again. Bonus, if you shop at Harris Farm at Broadway you get a shopper docket for the second meal free which they were happily expecting!
Went on a Tuesday night and it was empty, so lacked any atmosphere. Food was good, although we thought the Bollywood menu was a little pricey for what you get. Felt that I should have eaten downstairs, saved money and enjoyed more atmosphere - probably because it was midweek and so quiet.
Service was excellent. Have to say I wish that the TVs weren't on as they are a distraction from having a conversation ( the Bollywood shows are geat ) - I just believe TVs are for RSL type venues.
Love the food and the service here. Try to book a little later on Sat nights (around 8 pm) because the belly dancer usually comes in between 8.30 and 9 pm. Love the decor, especially the LCD's showing bollywood clips.. hillarious! Child friendly, great service.
A friend found this restaurant and took me there on a Tuesday night and it was a big hit with both of us. Clearly being a Tuesday we weren't expecting the place to be busy and other than two energetic large groups it was pretty quiet. The service was lovely, really friendly and chatty waiters who were happy to help out with menu suggestions when we asked.
I was thrilled that they had dosai on the menu, having been searching for good dosai ever since a visit to Malaysia years ago and was not disappointed, the dosai and accompaniments brought back memories! We tried the kashmiri chicken and a lamb dish, which turned out to be a good contrast of creamy and succulent (chicken) and a spice explosion with moreish tender meat for the lamb.
After one mouthful of the lamb we realised we desperately needed raita, and our waiter rushed it over to us! We really enjoyed it after that. We both walked away feeling sated and happy, with plans brewing to bring a big group back for a birthday dinner on a Friday night sometime soon...
You're correct, it's not *the* most amazing Indian food ever, but it's certainly damn good! I've eaten at a lot of places in Newtown over the past three years and I'd have to say that this is some of the best Indian I've had, and very reasonably priced (for the banquet option). Ambience not amazing, but certainly not bad, and staff were very pleasant (not too attentive but certainly weren't ignored!). I'd highly recommend TOT. The entrees, in particular, are highly recommended!
Can't help but feel some of these reviews with their effusive adjectives are a little consistent. I went to this place with the former offer of buy one get 2 entrees free. Nice place but dead empty mid week. The food is fairly standard despite the higher price; the cheaper Tamana downstairs is similar.
