Well what can I say? In short, after 9 years of regularly coming to this club restaurant I can definitely say absolutely never gain. We were ignored, it took 45 minutes to place our order, we watched table after table get served ahead of us (all Portuguese customers) and the final straw was when I approached the waiter to ask for our drinks to be served (another 20 minutes after ordering) that I was told (in a very rude manner) to wait. I questioned as to why we were being treated so badly & the waiter swore at me in Portuguese (of which I understood).
I went back to my table, waited another 10 minutes then decided to leave with my family. No wonder the club is going downhill - if this is how Australians are treated in their own country.
Worst ever dining experience in Sydney. Food was awful, the fish tasted old and possibly rotten and the pork had not one but two hairs in it. The ambience is like an airport deparure lounge. Hard seats and TVs playing non stop adds make for a woeful atmosphere. Not to mention the dearth of customers. After our experience I know why nobody is here!!
The service is shocking, with the waiter having nothing to do and hovering around. The guy in the back is worse, constantly swearing and spitting whilst he talks. As for value... if paying for the pleasure of having a good night ruined is your idea of value, this place is a must.
The food is nice, and the value for money is definitely there. We found the service friendly and we are non-Portuguese. This a nice place to have a meal, and we have been back since, and will probably head back again.
We'd heard a rumour that the Sydney Portuguese Community Club was well worth a look, so it was off to a back alley of Marrickville, under the goods line, and across two small fields full of mad-keen soccer playing lads (with excellent ball-skills), down through a hall, and to the first (unlabelled) door on the left.
'Perversely ambient' is how I would describe the dining room, with photos of Portuguese folk in cultural dress, wood art, and bug zappers. The architecture reminded me of a dining room on a train, with the sloping edges of the roof. Somehow though the decor added to the feeling that you were getting a really authentic Portuguese experience.
Our meal started with a big bowl of tiny, tasty olives and a never-ending complimentary bread basket with cornbread, white rolls, and endless butter. (And in these days of having to ask for butter at sandwich bars, to me getting lots of butter with a bread basket is a total delight.)
We decided to drink the house Sangria ($13 / 1L jug) which had a wide variety of fruits in it, including kiwi fruit, strawberries, green grapes, orange, watermelon and apple. The complex fruit mix changed the taste slightly from the much more alcoholic tasting Sangrias we were used to, but the almost cidery edge complimented the food well.
We decided upon a Chef's Entree Platter to share ($16) to sample a wide range of dishes. The stuffed squid was particularly tasty, and I was very happy to finally try the salted cod (bacalhau), presented in the form of cod rissoles. They were easy to eat, and went particularly well with the juicy, flavourful capsicum (which came in long, long strands).
For mains, my dining companion couldn't go past the Marinated Pork Cubes with Potatoes and Vongole Clams ($18). This dish was quite a balanced meal in itself - and a huge serve! The pickled vegetables on top provided a nice break from the intensely flavoured pork. The small olives we had enjoyed upon arrival also featured as cooked olives in the dish, and underneath the mound of cubed potatoes and pig, there were delicately flavoured vongole clams.
I couldn't go past the Prawns in Chilli Cooked in African Style ($22) and I wasn't disappointed with the huge platter of giant crustaceans that appeared before me dressed in a tasty chilli oil with garlic and a wedge of lemon that enhanced the flavour even more. I struggled to finish them, and was gently bullied by our waiter.
The service, incidentally, was great. Our waiter answered all my menu questions without rancour or (much) ridicule. We were the only non-Portuguese diners at the time, and most of the menu was translated, but a few dishes were left as self-evident... except to a non-Portuguese speaker.
They also offer a big paella for four people for $100, and a lobster for two for $80, plus a whole lot of interesting dishes that we didn't sample, including a drunken lamb dish, and a chicken and chorizo clay pot. I think we might have to return!
Went with a party of 18 and had a great night of organised chaos! Entrees were divine, loved the mushrooms. Mains were OK, (pork was very salty) and didn't arrive until 10:30. Overall great food, slow service but lots of fun!
The food is superb. Dishes such as salt cod, pork with clams and the most delicious garlic mushrooms make for a fantastic night out. The room is nothing special, but you're not here for a view of the harbour. Prices are great value considering the quality of the food served. Will be going back. You'll drink more sangria than you initially planned.
The food is delicious and reasonably priced. The servings are massive and we always end up with way too much food. I agree with previous reviews - the pork and clams and the sangria are divine. For a treat try the seafood platter for two. The Portugal Club is busy and noisy but a great night out!!
The boyfriend and I go here a lot. The food is just great and very reasonably priced. The service is usually great but the place gets very busy on weekends. I love the marinated pork cubes with potatoes & clams. I also like to order from their specials - the boyfriend always looks forward to the goat special.
Delicious authentic Portuguese food combined with incredibly personable service made for a great night out. Was a little hard to find though; take a local as a guide! Yummy sangria too; go easy on a school night though. I learnt the hard way...
As I'm Portuguese I've been going to this place for years. FOOD - is always traditional and of exceptional quality and MASSIVE serving sizes. AMBIENCE - The restaurant itself is quite small so it can get quite squeezy on busy nights. SERVICE - is great on quiet nights but can understandably be slow on the busier nights. VALUE - Excellent value as the serves are quite large. ADVICE - The bacalhau (codfish) dishes are great although for the inexperienced the cod dishes are quite salty. I strongly recommend the dish called "bacalhau no tachinho" it's served in a clay pot with a fillet of cod baked in a tomato based sauce with hand carved potato chips.
