You would have thought "sushi" Tei would serve good sushi but the sushi wasn't fresh at all! The hot food was acceptable. Service was ok even though they managed to stuff up our order and the fact we had to wait 30 minutes for the sushi to arrive (was not worth the wait).
I was reading at some of the earlier comments on this restaurant, and I feel that this place has been quite unfairly rated. Thus, it compels me to write a review of my own.
I've been there many times now and though I won't say that it's perfect each time, I dare say that I always left the restaurant feeling happy and satisfied! The food is delicious and the sashimi is fresh. What I love most is the variety it offers. There's always something new to try each time.
I especially love their Dragon Roll and Aburi Salmon Roll. Not forgetting their 'mentai' range. Recently, they even added some special menu which gives me more 'happy problem'! There's always something for everyone, thus a good place to go with a big group of friends or business associates. And with the good ambience and value, you can't really go too wrong..!
I've been to Sushi Tei in Singapore/Jakarta many times. As in these two countries, they are not many well made sushi places available, Sushi Tei does fullfill the demand well. However, this does not happen in Sydney. As we have from high end Tetsuya as well E-Sushi to mid Masuya Group and bargain Sushi Train. Many many choices. My brother noticed that many of the dishes are top with creamy roe which is yummie but at the same time if you order a lot, its rather heavy. So far, nothing in the menu that making Sushi Tei stands out from other places or makes me or my family members want to go back even we have to travel for it.
The other things in term of service, I was there a couple times and when there was an order missed by the waitress, the waitress will come back to us and said we didn't order it. Its not only happen once. Funny ... Hmm ... Beside this, Sushi Tei is another great place to enjoy Japanese food! Gambatte!
How busy is this place on Friday and Saturday nights? We went there to try it out what the fuss is all about.
To their defence, we didn't order any sushi. We ordered Tempura, potato coroquette and Chicken katsu. The skin of the Tempura was nicely coated, but too greasy. The chicken katsu was too greasy too. The most disappointment was the rice. A Japanese restaurant who can't get the rice right just isn't good enough for me. I cringe when I think that this rice is serve for sushi as well.
No Japanese in the restaurant too, so that says it all. Wouldn't go back there again.
I think everything that can be said about this restaurant has been said in the reviews below. But to put in my two cents' worth:
The food really is not as bad as what some reviews seem to suggest. The variety is quite good, and the trick is in ordering the right dishes. I never sit at the train because your choice then becomes limited to what they put on the train, which are the popular/best-selling dishes.
I agree that the service is below par. Once, after we paid one bill, they actually rushed a second bill to us saying that some of the dishes which we ordered after we put in our first order were left off the first bill! However, the menu is big and full of pictures, and so long as you point to the right dish, it's hard to get lost in translation. And at least the staff are friendly.
They've also started accepting Entertainment Cards, which gives you a discount, which makes the food better value.
My first experience was definitely an awful one, the waiters and waitresses were very unprofessional (always playing around and giggling). Eventhough the value was acceptable, I'd rather spend it somewhere else. I've tried the Sushi Tei in other countries and they are one of my favourite restaurants. I'm very disappointed with Sydney's Sushi Tei! The waiters and waitresses could barely barely speak English.
I really think that you should hire proper Japanese employees in a Japanese Restaurants. Definitely wouldn't recommend this restaurant unless there's going to be some improvements in the management and service and especially the foods!
I came here to try a bit of their signature dishes and of course, sushi. Having had experience of this Singaporean Japanese chain in Hong Kong (its ceased operation there), how wrong was I to expect the same quality of food. The HK one, and I presume the Singaporean ones as well, has Japanese head chefs who are well trained and gets the food quality pretty spot on, although not mighty impressive.
The Sydney meanwhile saw sushi chefs laughing with each other and not being professionals, they also looked like overseas students not mature enough for the job. The quality of the sushi rice was very below par. Funnily enough I thought the fish quality and freshness was also not up to standard, which one would not expect in a restaurant with aspirations to open more shops in Australia.
Some of the fish we had were just plain not fresh, and the rice quality was over-cooked for nigiri sushi. Having said that, this shop does have certain signature dishes that they're invented themselves. However, when a sushi shop serves fish that is not fresh, its already enough for me to vow, never again. Unfortunately. It makes people sick like that.
Nothing special, feels like macca's of sushi restaurants. Service wasn't great, I kept having to get out of my seat to grab staff for water, etc. had the tempura bento box, it was ok but a bit on the oily side.
