Huge volume with reasonable price! The set menu is especially great value. However, service is not really great. We always in a queue to get seats but the waiter pushes you in a hurry somehow for whatever you do or ask.
They food was really good before they moved and it is more costly now since they have spent $$ on those decor. (which does not reflect on the quality of food). For some reason, the serving of food they give are smaller for different nationality. There are most value Jap restaurants now, so will not return as often.
Small cosy Japanese restaurant. There was already a queue waiting for it to open in the evening. The quality of the food is alright but it's good value as the size of the dishes are enormous (especially the salad). We were definitely stuffed by the end of the meal. The service is not terribly good but would go there again for the food.
I remember when this place used to be a really dingy place with really great, really fresh food. Then they suffered death by decor, with a stylish renovation that has added glitz to the look but detracted from the quality of the food. Given that Sydney is overflowing with really great Japanese cuisine, I wondered why I bothered returning. In hope of long faded memories, I guess.
Love the food here (found myself talking about it in Japan!) and have learnt to laugh at the appalling service, as have not found better Japanese in Sydney.
Head waiter will punish you if you are late, early, don't have your whole party with you, or he doesn't like the look of you, and will banish you upstairs until he feels ready to serve you.
Was once a regular here. However, nowadays the quality of the food seems to fluctuate. For example, during lunch time, the sashimi doesn't seem as fresh. The restaurant's osenior staffs seem to be as arrogant as before. Nothing changed there. If the food remained superb and fresh, maybe I would return. But until they fix their snobbish attitude and improve their value (it's more like cafe/bistro food for $$$) they will be losing plenty of customers.
We used to love this place, used to love the food and the price that is reachable for the pocket, service was used to be alright, at least tolerable for our point of view, you can book seats and they will reserve it for you as long you are not ridiculously late. Last night, we went there brought a friend who's going back to his country for good, so booked 3 seats since Sunday night since they close on monday. Got there 5 mins late and this guy said you are late so no seats for you, wait for 15 mins! We end up went somewhere else since the 15mins looks like it's going to be 2 hours wait! What kind of service is this? If they can't even reserve seats for bookings, don't bother taking a booking! Just tell the customers that they don't do booking. They have become annoyingly arrogant especially since they got the new place and I agree with the rest of you that they have no clue that they are loosing their regulars.
Sushi Suma is a great place for affordable Jap food. Only problem is the long queues and the lack of service. New patrons should try the cali rolls. They are the best in Sydney.
Been here a couple of times and the food was great! I really like their beef teriyaki set, a bit expensive but the serving portions were generous. Place was a bit too small in my view, and sometimes you have to wait to get your table as well. My suggestion is to come a bit early so that you don't have to wait long.
I must say that I only come to Sushi Suma for its fresh sashimi and large porportions of food, and not for a dining experience. And I'm sure the head waiter/owner knows this is the reason why people still flock here for a truly authentic japanese meal! Yes the service is poor and the ambience/spatial appeal can be quite caustrophobic, I'll still come here anyday to satisfy a craving for japanese! Even if I have to stand in queue for an hour or 2.
