You get a decent portion of reasonable sushi and sashimi for a reasonable price. The sashimi plate offers better and fresher fish than the sushi plate. The restaurant is crowded and noisy, but you come here for the food, not the furniture. Service is efficient.
After hearing about this place from friends and reading the reviews here I decided to bite the bullet. Yes the servings are huge and yes I have no complaints about the quality of the food (especially at such a low price) but all of this was overshadowed by the horrid cramped seating and the rude guy (you all know who I mean) who grunts and points at customers. He's in the wrong job. A little friendly smile goes a very long way in the service industry. That said, the other staff were polite and friendly although they looked like they were run off their feet. Overworked and underpaid no doubt which is why I always tip but not this time.
Some reviewers have put the bad service down to language/culture barrier which in my opinion is disappointing - Japanese wait staff are renowned for impeccable service (even if their English isn't up to scratch!!!).... If I go back I will order takeaway.
Don't know why the listing has it as $$ as I think it is possibly the cheapest vairety Japanese place I have ever been to. Went last week with a group of 5 and we ordered 2 entrees and 5 mains and this all came up to a total of $100. Really ridiculously cheap because the servings are big too.
Have to say they do the best sashimi set...their sashimi really is so so so fresh and it is my favourite place for it. The rest of what they do is also very good but its the sashimi that is the pull. Highly recommended.
Cheap lunch, normal price for dinner. Service sucks to the very core, the guy was soo rude, ignored us to then comeback and leave us stranded again. Me and my friends vowed to never come back again. There's other better japanese restaurant out there AND with much better service. This is coming from someone who always go to japanese restaurant and none of them has ever gave us such bad service.
Sushi Suma will always have a crowd. The meals are inexpensive and you usually need to ask the waitress/waiter for a takeaway box to take the left overs home for lunch the next day. That's the great thing about it and that's really about it for me.
The food is ok but not really that great. This is mass produced Japanese, with no love and care shown in the preparation of the dishes. I guess you can't really expect that here since meals fly out of the kitchen and the wait staff want you out within the hour or else.......
The restaurant is crammed with very limited space with the noise level making it difficult to have a conversation with your fellow diners. This place is more suited as a 'eat and get out of here' kind of joint. You won't enjoy the wait staff harassing you to finish up your meal within the hour.
One thing I realise is that the crowd here are predominately young workers/uni students. This maybe due to the fact that the meals are inexpensive and uni students can usually put up with a lot of noise and lousy service. Maybe I am getting old, but I believe that service is king and food prepared with love and care is what I am looking for nowadays.
I love this place. Everytime I go there I get in straight away. Food is delicious and can't beat the price. I highly recommend it!! I don't see the big deal about waiting, sitting so close or the fast pace. It's all part of the experience. Love it love it love it!! Everytime I come to Sydney its my first port of call! Enjoy!
We arrived around 7pm after the soccer final and after a short wait upstairs we ordered and then were taken to our table. Service was pretty average but like most of the cheaper Asian eateries it becomes expected. The décor was bland and you get the feeling it was an eat and run type restaurant.
The food arrived promptly and was fresh and tasty. The Sashimi, sushi, tempura and Una ju (unagi) were all enjoyable and plentiful. Both of us left feeling very full and the bill was quite reasonable. Definitely a place for a good, inexpensive Japanese meal.
I'm a regular at Sushi Suma, at least once a week, it's a regular thing I do with a couple of mates. We always book, but still have to take the stairs up to 'the waiting area'. It's advisable to book. Booking at Sushi Suma means you're waiting time will 'be less' if you haven't booked. We're regulars but get treated the same every week. Like we've never been there! We're sure that the guy knows us, he must!!!
The food is exceptionally fresh, fast and fantastic value. We go for the food and the value, and we'll keep coming back and they know it! We're three blokes who can put away a lot of food, and every week we're a bit surprised with how much the outing has cost us.
