The NewYork Cheesecake is the bEST!!! You really need to try the desserts there! and the Japanese staff there were really nice, we ordered a ice-cream set which was supposed to have only 3 scoops and we ended up getting 6 for the same price!!
YOU must try the SCAMPI sushi and the SCALLOP sushi, they're just toooo good, if you order the scampi sushi, you'll be surprised with the miso soup! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! but remember to book before you go!
After reading the reviews of this place, I might have had my expectations too high. For a Tuesday night it was surprisingly busy and I was pleased to get a seat so soon. It's cosy size and clean lines make for a nice atmosphere, with friendly waiters to boot.
We tried the spicy soft shell crab, which was just the standard version with sweet chili sauce drizzled over it. This looked great and was delicious but was lacking enough punch to call it "spicy". The agedashi tofu was really nice, just the right texture but seemed to be missing the bonito flakes I like to watch wiggle around on top.
So far so good, but when the mains came out, we were not too impressed by the wagyu beef with ponzu sauce. It was served on a sizzling plate with a mountain of bean sprouts but was no where near as tender as it mentions on the menu. It was so chewy and tough that we ended up leaving most of it on the plate. The samurai chirashi was better but the sashimi didn't seem as fresh as it could have been.
So the entrees were good but the mains weren't up to scratch. In terms of value I don't believe it breaks any new ground, just on par with other Jap restaurants in the CBD. Better Jap value can be found a bit closer to Chinatown I think.
This small hidden eatery in Pyrmont is a real gem. We arrived late on a Thursday night and were seated fairly quickly. We started off with soft crab and takuyaki balls which were both tasty and fresh. We then shared a sushi and sashimi combo platter which was presented well and tasted delicious. Both of us were full by the end of our meal. The service was fine and the waiters were warm and friendly. The value was on par with many other good Japanese restaurants in the city.
Definitely worth the visit!
Small space, yet seems bigger probably because of the long bench seat down one wall. Noisy but you could talk to your companion, the night we visited there were two large groups of 10!!
The food was fantastic, we also had the agodashi tofu, pork belly & also the soft shell crab sushi & croquettes. All of these were great but the crab & tofu were the highlights. The pork belly is not the crispy Chinese version, be warned!! It is boiled & resembles bacon strips, still very good though!
We shared everything which is fine. Service is attentive & speedy without trying to push you out or hassle you which you find in a lot of Asian restaurants. The best part is the bill which for us was under $50 for two!
When a Japanese restaurant is frequented primarily by Japanese, this is usually a good sign. Small, cosy and with an industrial edge, this restaurant has a nice atmosphere with wait staff who are unswervingly polite and helpful. Some items on the menu were set to shine, agedashi tofu, braised pork belly (Japanese bacon as my friend described it.) Other items less impressive, the sashimi in particular.
When eating raw fish, anything less than 10 out of 10 will not do. Overall, the food was not as impressive as some of the reviews below would have you believe.
Love it! The food really nice and big portion as well. Love the cream croquest on special menu (hopefully that menu will stay). Friendly staff, good service, good food, highly recommended. Can't wait to go back there.
Fantastic value for superb japanese food. You basically can order anything and can't go wrong here. We usually go to the one in pyrmont, a little bit cramped. The food was fresh and quite fast. Service was good, what more can you ask for?
Fantastic value for money, we visit Sushi Samurai often and it has been consistently good apart from the occasional glitch in service. The portions are massive, and often find ourselves struggling to finish a main, in particular the lunch sets, even when we arrive practically starving. The staff are friendly, attentive and apologetic when they make a rare mistake, out of the many times we have eaten there our food has only failed to arrive at a respectable time once.
It is never too busy and we have never been forced to wait for a table, they have also opened up a takeaway shop next door which I highly recommend for those who need lunch to go. This restaurant has remained consistently above average, and is highly recommended.
Very very good Japanese food. Restaurant is small so put up with crammed seating and just enjoy the food. Suggest you try the spider rolls, they are great.
Wife and I have been enjoying the other Sushi Samurai in Neutral Bay (see my other review on that) so we tried this Pyrmont one. This has turned out to be equally good - but differently! Place is small but that's fine. It is not noisy too, probably due to the "quality" of customers (like myself, haha).
Food is also great but the story is different from the Neutral Bay one. NB one is great with sushi but I'd say sushi here is not really good. Except for sushi, others are very good. I would definitely recommend the cold soba. Excellent texture and the soba source are just perfect. Teriyaki beef (medium rare please) is very juicy and tender. Grilled fish head is very yummy but too big for 2 people. The only thing I don't quite like is the difficulty with the paid, street parking.
