I love Japanese food and will scour Sydney for good Sashimi. Sushi Suma certainly offers that, but the dining experience leaves a little to be desired. Be prepared to spend anywhere between 1 and 20 minutes on the pavement waiting for a table - it seems that good, cheap Sashimi doesn't come without a catch.

They eventually pack you in, take your order (sometimes they even do this on the pavement) and food comes fast. The sushi and sashimi are always fresh and the portions are generous. I've heard others say - and I have also noted - that the cuts of meat in the hot dishes can be a little fatty, but the food comes so fast and at such little cost that it seems unfair to complain.

This isn't the kind of place to sit and chill - it's an in-and-out kind of affair. There will be people wanting your table, and I suspect that the chairs are deliberately hard. If you can't deal with queueing for your food or squashing up with other diners - try the take-away and enjoy it at home. It's even cheaper that way.

The place is small and they expect you to sit down and start eating. Order was taken on a PDA outside the restaurant. When our table is ready, they led us to our table and we found that the sashimi is already on the table. They don't look fresh and they are probably pre-cut and put into the fridge. We found the sushi to be the same. Just not the same as freshly made. I would rate the quality worst than those sushi train. Portion is quite generous. Lots of variety. Just not very tasty. The chicken teriyaki is pretty tasteless.

I have been away from Sydney for nearly 9 months and have missed the Sushi Suma so much! Nowhere compares to the quality of their sashimi! It is absolutely fabulous! Very authentic japansese! Do not expect super service, but the staff do try their hardest, it's just a langauge barrier. All worth it for the food and the price! I went on friday and I'm going again tonight! (monday!) can't wait! Tempura veges are divine! Bring wine and lots of friends! it gets noisy, but it's awesome!

The prices were definitely on the lower end of the scale but, especially when it comes to sushi, you get what you paid for. The sashimi was better than average, but the chicken katsu and beef teriyaki were overcooked and uninspiring. The service was efficient however I had made a booking and was told to wait outside until the entire group arrived, odd. Good for a cheap date but only the day before payday.

Sushi Suma has become an institution in Surry Hills amongst locals. The food here is always good and no matter how many people in your party you can always be assured of paying no more than $20 a head. The combination dishes of sashimi, sushi and tempura are less than $20 and are huge. This is casual organised chaos so if you'r after a dining experience go elsewhere. Get there early or expect to stand outside with the crowd waiting for a table but this has always been part of the charm of Sushi Suma. Value at its best!

Sunday night, didn't feel like cooking. Strolled up to Sushi Suma, waited a few minutes before we were beckoned in to take a seat. A couple of menus appeared. Wine opened and poured. Crab croquettes - saucy. Salmon and Tuna sashimi - great. Prawn and Vegetable tempura - perfect. All served with ambivalence by the efficient staff. Fantastic casual eating. Love it.

Just arrived home from a visit to this restaurant, and felt obliged to write a review.

A friend and I arrived at the restaurant totally famished and so ordered quite a lot of food. And a lot it was...! Unfortunately, the food was not very good. We started of with the salmon sashimi which was the highlight of the meal. The nigiri arrived, the cuts were not very good, and there was so much wasabi on the rice that I couldn't taste the fish. The yakiniku beef fillet must have been lost in translation, as there was no way that it could have possibly been fillet of beef.

The yakitori contained so much skin with the chicken it was rendered inedible. The prawn tempura roll was huge, unfortunately, I couldn't taste the prawn in between all the rice, salad and mayonaise. We finished with tempura, which was ok, if not a touch heavy. All washed down with a cup of green tea - which was very good.

After arriving famished, we couldn't finish the meal. This was not down to the size of the portions.

I wish that I was able to equate quality of food with size of portions, as seems to be the trend of the moment, unfortunately I can't. Value is not represented in size, but in the quality of the flavours and the whole experience. Something lacking i'm afraid.

I would have prefered to have paid more money for less food, if only it was worth it.

Absolutely the best Japanese food in Sydney, especially when value for money is a factor. Always go for the Sushi or Sashimi dinner set with tempura or terriyaki fish. Can't go wrong!. Well worth the wait - even when you're famished!

A review at a glance - quality Japanese meal at the most reasonable price possible. Enormous servings. Great job with the refurbishments. Service is pedestrian, at best.

Another excellent place for quality Japanese food less the hefty price tag! The servings are massive and the dessert ice-cream is very authentically prepared, to say the least.

The only downside of this place is the level of attention you get from the staff, obviously because it's so packed all the time.

But all in all, it's an excellent place for quality Japanese food if you are a patient person.
