Other recent reviewers are correct - Sushi Bar Rashai has, unfortunately, gone down hill. I have been a customer since the 1980's, and the food in the past was always excellent. Last night, both my girlfriend and I fell ill during the night.

We ordered a fish teriyaki, and the amount of fish on a mountain of salad was measly for $19.80. In addition, we reckon it was basa, the cheapest imported fish on the market. The miso soup was the worst we have had anywhere. It had the consistency of a heavy sludge, instead of the reasonably clear appearance, and light fresh taste one expects.

Went there last Saturday evening. Service was slow to start but improved once our orders were taken. We started with a miso soup each which we thought was 'ok' only. Then we shared a sukiyaki which tasted 'funny' and well below average. I ordered a tempura to try and over ride of the taste of the sukiyaki but it was only 'ok' as well.

It is easy to find better food and better value almost anywhere in Sydney than this place and therefore I cannot recommend this restaurant.

This place has gone backwards. Having been here 10 times over the years, the sushi and sashimi cuts have always been of a high standard. Went on Friday night and it was terrible, inedible. The tuna sushi was room temperature like it had been prepared that afternoon, no wasabi within the sushi, sashimi cuts were thick and chewy. Very disappointed as this has always been a great place for us. Alas I won't be rushing back here as it was never the best value, but close, convenient and good quality, no more.

Brilliant food in a casual and relaxed place, service has never been a problem and we have been going there regularly for a number of years. It's rather like a family affair so don't expect a waiter to be on hand all the time, just signal them with a smile and they will come to you though.

I don't understand the negative reviews on here, maybe people are expecting silver service in a family restaurant? The place could do with a coat of paint though and a bit of a revamp to freshen it up after all these years in service.

Best store signage ever. "We may be slow but at least the food is delicious" [not verbatim]. The soft shell crab and fake KFC chicken is great. Probably the only reasons I keep coming back. Otherwise, everything else on the menu is pretty expensive.

Wow, what a disappointing experience. Despite the claim of Authentic Japanese experience, both waiters we dealt with were Koreans. This led to a totally different dining experience. The worst value Japanese I've been to yet in Sydney. Softshell crab (chef's special) $10 and guess the serving size, all of one single crab. I've had better value at much nicer places in the city.

Atmosphere was typical of a suburban eatery, certainly not Japanese. (It's on Parramatta rd, what was I expecting?). I've seen their ads and went past their window many times, bold claims, poor facts. I think for best Japanese in Sydney, best to stick to Neutral Bay and Mosman.

I concur with most of the negative comments posted below. Food: Not bad, but not above average either. Service: Not attentive, slow to respond. Value: Overpriced, given it's location, quality, service etc. Better to dine at a better and fine Japanese restaurant in city.

Wow, many people, nice food, however, not typical of Japanese, really not a nice experience. Water glass smelt like seafood and staff were hot and cold. Very odd place and it does belong on this road, come in groups of 2 and don't expect much is all I can say. My wife is Japanese and spoke to a Japanese waitress and she spoke back in English and shut her off. Horrible everything, however, food was good.
