Of all the yum cha restaurants we've been to around Sydney and interstate, in over 20 years, this place has to be the worst. Some of the quintessential yum cha dishes (e.g. chicken feet, and bean curd vegetarian roll) were pretty close to inedible and the freshness of the ingredients had to be seriously questioned. We will not be going back and will not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Without doubt, the best tasting yum cha I've ever had. I've been twice in the past week and both times have been as good as each other. The quality of the food is a real step up from normal yum cha restaurants, i.e. whole prawns rather than prawn meat. Also, the service is very friendly and the overall ambience is nice enough.
I highly recommend this place, although on weekends it might be a bit of a crowded shocker. Very highly recommended.
I expected the full moon festival to be busy, and it was. Could the kitchen cope? Beautifully. Could the staff cope? Well. We were a birthday party of 25 people, and we ordered a lot! The food, standard Cantonese fare in Hong Kong noise and glitz and red and velvet, is great! Quality ingredients, large portions, and perfect flavours. The kitchens must be incredible! It all arrived at the correct time, cooked perfectly, and was delicious!
The young and eager staff made no mistakes, were polite, quick, and dropped nothing. But their manager was rude to them, critical of them, and frequently yelled at them loudly enough that it beat the din. That caused them to make mistakes, and made the mood odd to say the least.
I hesitate to criticise such an obviously well-run and much cared for family business, but staff management is so important if you want it all to work. They need to look at this.
Not the place for a quiet dinner (but perhaps a weeknight is worth trying), but fantastic for a noisy birthday dinner. Filled with Hurstville locals having a great time. Truly a restaurant that achieves what it sets out to. We'll go back!
Shockingly bad food and service. Rice noodles with prawns (simple dish!!!????!!!!) was inedible. Staff were rude. After being told we had to wait for our bill because the cashier had gone to the bathroom, 10 minutes later when we got it, they would not accept a credit card for a $28 bill as they said they had a $30 minimum.
Even if we rounded up to over $30 through the tip they said no. Will not return.
Catering to the local asian community, this restaurant has fantastic yum cha. Sadly the staff don't speak english, so ordering specific dishes could be a little tricky. The restaurant itself is very large and quite luxurious, but always bustling and noisy, not a relaxing experience. The food quality and value, however, is outstanding.
The 3rd floor for Yum Cha is not ideal if you want great variety or even nominal service. Attempt, if possible, to get either the first or second floors and don't become enraged when your requests are constantly ignored by the indifferent " wait"staff.
It's a true shame about the staffing issues as the food is absolutely delicious.
Overall a great yum cha experience. Food variety is top notch, the ambience includes luscious decorations and the value is at the top of the heap (expect to pay only around $12 a head compared to $14+ elsewhere).
Service can be quite terrible though. While food is served promptly one said there wasn't any meat dumplings available. Then a few minutes later guess what came.
I've been here for yum cha. It was not long waiting to be seated even though it was saturday. We got seat on the 2nd floor. The food is yummy even not too many choices, maybe because we came late (about 11am). The place so good atmosphere, it is best place to have chat and drink tea. The price is reasonable. Will come back again to try dinner.
Since Sunny's has moved to the new larger and refreshed address Yum Cha on the weekends has been a top hit, living in the area I thought I would go and check it out for myself.
I cannot say any bad things about the food, only that the dumplings were a little too sticky and tore apart very easily, seeming to the fact they had been in the steamer for a little too long part from that the food was fresh, flavourful and a good variety. The only fault was the service and the acutaly logistics of the trolley waiters trying to get thier attention when our table was cornered off by another table and the waitress seemlessy walking past very quickly to get to Asain customers.
I ordered a coconut jelly and the waitress told me they do not have it. I saw her bringing it out to another Asain customer whom she was very friendly with. I guess for the price you pay, you aren't paying for the service of the inexperienced waiters/waitresses. The only advice I have is to get there early, try and request a table in sight and enjoy the food as that is the only thing they do very well.
Yum cha meaning 'drink tea' is a Sunday ritual I take a lot of pleasure in. The hustle and bustle of trolleys being wheeled around, the constant chatter and clatter of your chopsticks as you wait ceremoniously for your favorite dishes to come around is an experience that comes into its own. We arrive at 11 am by this newly renovated three storey building.
Alas, we still have to wait for a good 20 minutes as we collect our raffle and wait patiently. Prices per head range from $15-20 depending on how much you order, the food comes out fast, the service was particularly on form, while the variety of dishes was slightly disappointing but compensated by satisfying and tasty food.
