Food is good (Hong Kong style?) but the great thing is that it has a lot of seats (unlike nearby restaurants) and the service is great! The food has improved a lot since it opened.
FOOD - Food is quite good. I like the salt and pepper ribs, santung chicken, sizzling tofu, hot pots, bbq/roast pork, and seafood flat noodle. Congee is very watery.
AMBIENCE - This place is very loud. You almost have to yell to have a conversation with the person next to you. The floor can be slippery (with oil?). When asked if I should go to the toilet or hold a little longer until we got home, my husband said, "You don't want to go there."
SERVICE - Service is very poor even for a Chinese restaurant. The waitresses and waiters are rude most of the times... from taking orders to bringing the dishes to getting your bill.
VALUE - Portions are good for the price. But I hate the fact that you have to pay extra for rice when you order the mains. I think rice should be complimentary.
We go to this place every 2 weeks or so because my husband likes the food here. I prefer the BBQ place just a few shops down the road because I can't stand being treated poorly when I'm a paying customer.
You know I've always wished for a litmus paper test for MSG because you can never tell when you walk into a restaurant, especially an Asian ones whether they're using this steroid of cooking. I haven't been able to detect it at Sun Mings which is great because the food is quite tasty, solid fare with a bit a little bit of flair.
Sun Ming is at the former MacDonald's site on Rowe St in Eastwood. A highly competitive suburb (especially Rowe St) filled to the brim with Japanese, Korean and Chinese eateries, with a level quality growing at leaps and bounds. You do have to hand it to Michael (the manager), they've finally fitted out the kitchen properly and refurbished the externals. Show its got the original floor but it's finally got a proper kitchen. This in itself is a testament of Eastwoods growing standards (from the dark old days).
The bloke at the front doing the BBQ adds much character to the joint and hey the BBQ isn't bad at all. Though I don't know how they compete. Sure they don't have BBQ pigeon but is still not too bad.
My favourite is the combination chow mien. Normally I stay away from these sorts of dishes but Sun Ming don't shy away from going traditional on ya. Wify likes the salted fish buk-choy (chef special - appeals strongly to Asian tastes apparently) and the menu is filled with many other dishes you'd normally not see. But then again this is Eastwood.
I'm happy Sun Ming's has survived against fierce competition. Again as long as the food is good I couldn't care less about atheistic though don't expect a candle lit dinner. It's a loud Chinese eatery, filled with many a discerning traditional customer. The tea isn't bad, and the service is exactly what you expect for the price your paying. Not a bad place....definitely one for towards the end of the pay cycle when you want a tasty meal that won't break the bank.
I'm definitely one of many regular at this place. Where else can you have breakfast for 2, including drinks, for $10 or less? But stay away from any 'western' breakfast set, bit disappointed with my sausage and egg set. Otherwise, all their 'Chinese' breakfast set are value for money.
Food is always freshly cooked. Never had a bad meal here. My partner and I eat here at least once a week. Great place for a late night take-away too. I love their afternoon tea specials. Lots to choose from. Their BBQ duck and meat are the best! Fast and attentive service.
