Overview
A small community hole in the wall, serving international tapas and a fantastic wine list by the bottle and glass. This is a classic wine bar tapas joint withgreat atmosphere and an upstairs lounge that is a mix of Melbourne and a 1930's bordello. Enjoy. We did and so did countless others.

Nice little place, when busy quite cosy wine bar! Very friendly staff. Good wine selection, good food.
Went to this popular location admittedly no booking, was told would be called, returned 1hr later with empty seats and was seated, however, no call was ever going to be made and surprised looks from the staff that we would actually wait.
Wine selection good, however, well overpriced for wines less than 10 years old.
Food portions small and overpriced, Soft shell crab on special board not noticeable but would have been best on menu. Service appalling, could over hear staff laughing at diners for wanting to keep picking at dishes when almost finished, almost as if diners were not good enough to eat in their restaurant.
A poor overpriced dining experience and not recommended for anyone with a good night in mind.
Ok so we need this type of place, yes in the east as we really need to "Surry-Hills up" our suburbs in regards to small places with good decor, good drinks and good food but is Sumbar it?. Not quite yet, it is ok, I will give it another go in a few months, the wine list is great, the cocktails are few and are average and over priced for the quality and lack of variety, they should not be $16 cocktails, the food is ok, not fab not great-the specials are over priced for what you get.
The service is very good though which I will not fault, the ambience is severely lacking, it just needs that bit more to make a difference, I am thinking and hoping they are not finished yet but the interior needs doing, the courtyard needs a severe makeover, ok you are facing a massive Bunnings sign but more tall plants, more lights etc would not go astray, some interior/exterior design needs to happen here, the lighting needs to change, if these things happen I think it will be the bar it is supposed to be.
The east is crying out for places like this but this place is not quite there yet and needs a bit more work to become a true regular....if you build it...
SumBar is the perfect new addition to Randwick and the East Sydney area. As a Melbourian, SumBar has finally given Sydney some long needed style and culture. We will definitely be back to this very warm and welcoming place, where the wine selection is fantastic and the food the perfect accompaniment. Well done to the owners and staff, you guys are here for many years to come.
Went with group of four people. Wine list was a good size with wide variety. Plenty of 'by the glass' options made it easy to choose wine for the types of food ordered.
Disappointed with the food. Portion sizes were good but food was tasteless and boring (could easily cook yourself at home).
Staff were relaxed but not attentive enough to consider it good service. Didn't find the staff welcoming or hospitable which was strange for a newly opened restaurant. May still be finding their feet but will not be going back particularly with other Tapas bars opening up in the Coogee/Randwick area.
Had a great tapas meal here on Friday night (3/10/08). Had the veges, prawns, potatoes, chorizo and mushrooms, all great! Service was great, they left us in peace! and the wine was great and we had plenty to choose from. Definitely going back!
We normally go for tapas in coogee but decided to try this new place out (opened in July). We had garlic prawns, Chorizo, asparagus and haloumi salad and patatas bravas. The food was good, patatas were the best I have had in a long while and the asparagus salad was something different and perfectly cooked.
The wine list is well populated and there are a lot wines available by the glass and european wines to try as well as good aussie wines. Decor is quite unusual and unique, great lighting and furniture make it feel snug and cozy. Good atmosphere.
The guy behind the bar was very friendly and organised, good service.
The bill for 4 tapas plates, bread and 2 glasses of wine was $60, we thought this was good value as the portions were quite generous. A great addition to the area, I'm sure we'll be back.
Music, food and wine. This place has it all in a cosy stylish friendly place. The food from the Jamon and olives to the soft shell crab and magic mushrooms is well presented and well served by very friendly staff who will go out of their way to help. Even on the busy night that we were there.
Now for the wines, great choice, I was told the owner's wife put together the wine list and if this is true what a great job. Expansive, but not overly so it gives the opportunity to taste a great variety and to taste a different wine for the very differently favoured food. The wine by the glass selection is superb. Thanks for coming to Randwick. Good luck and can't wait to try the spring menu with the Spanish white wine that is one the way.
What a fantastic place. Hole in the wall exactly and exactly what is needed in the area. Went last night with a small group of friends. Spring menu started on Wednesday and all was great. Flavours fantastic. Wine by the glass is the way to go, there is a different wine for every dish and then some.
I remember travelling to Spain when I was much younger and delighting in the small wine bars on every street corner. This is it, now we have one here. You must try the lamb with the nicely chilled reisling. All served by very exotic staff. It was busy, it was bustling and these guys have pulled it off.
Thanks for coming and we will be back, next week I think. Check out the rear courtyard it is the place to sit for an afternoon of relaxing.
Cellini's has moved down the road, new management have certainly made a good job of refurbishing the old place and, when daughter and I dropped in last week for a glass of wine and a few nibbles the joint was jumping. We took two seats against the window and checked the menu and wine list. Daughter's first choice of wine was unavailable (so could it not have been crossed off the blackboard list?) but another was quickly chosen and both our choices served.
We ordered some olives, a plate of jamon and, from the specials board, chorizo and mangeno. Olives excellent, chorizo and mangeno spicy, sizzling and delicious, jamon, which arrived after a reminder to a staff member, was good, and a generous serving for the modest price. Since this place is so close to home, I am sure we will become regulars.
