I attended a large Christmas function with my husband and was extremely disappointed with the food and service. A set fixed price menu had been organised. Some of the dishes were unpalatable and there was a general meaness with things like bread and wine. With the exception of a brazilian/japanese waitress, the staff serving the tables were verging on rude.
My husband decided on the spare of the moment on a saturday night to go here for dinner. We were not disappointed. As a matter of fact, everything about the dinner was great. We had plenty of attention from the charming staff, the food (I had a veal dish and hubby had a pasta with sardines, mushrooms and other yummy fillings in it), coffee was great too. Will definitely return. Good value.
One of the most disappointing dining experiences I have ever had! If you risk it, only go for the pizzas, which my fellow diners said were a treat - forget everything else and prepare yourself for a quick exit.
The place is cavernous and our waiter was rude and more interested in looking at what the next table was up to rather than telling us anything about the daily specials. We ordered a garlic pizza to start (dry, tasteless frisbee, anyone?) and it went downhill from there. The antipasto platter consisted of meat only. None of the usual accompaniments - olives, cheese, tomato, etc etc, just mounds and mounds of meat!! We had to ask for some bread.
The pizzas were apparently good, but a homestyle lasagne of flavourless meat chunks with 3 strips of lasagne pasta was bland and more like stewed meat. Parmesan and rocket salad had to be returned to the kitchen for the addition of parmesan - when presented it had consisted of rocket plus 2 shavings of parmesan! And this place isn't inexpensive. A half melted strawberry gelato and a crepe dish with a chocolate sauce so rum-filled it was bitter and inedible followed.
By this time we had complained heartily to the waiter, and luckily the owner Marco intervened. He was nice enough to give us our spoonful of dessert as complimentary and took the time to chat about our comments - a welcome relief and the only thing that made the entire experience tolerable.
This place could be really good perhaps a female touch is required with the sprucing up the unwelcoming decor and the weird portion sizes, along with some new waiters and a bit of quality control in the kitchen - some of the reviews on this site show that it is a bit hit-and-miss at the moment.
“Magnifica”. This is the best Italian word I can use to describe as “magnificent” the food in Sugo Restaurant. I went there couple of weeks ago to try the degustation menu and the food for that week was from Liguria region. All dishes were beautifully presented and very tasty, but my extra compliments are going to “the trofie with pesto”. It was really good, one of the best pastas I have tried before. The dessert, cherry jam tart, was fantastic as well. Everybody in our table had a lovely night with excellent food, reasonably priced, with a good value for the money. Definitely a place to go back other times.
A disappointing experience! We used to eat here before it changed names and were happy. Unfortunately the room divider has been removed and it reveals one too large looking eating area. Something needs to be done about the noise level. There are no soft furnishings to absorb the noise. We had a toddler beside us making quite a noise. Not what I call a romantic relaxing dinner on a Friday night after working all week. Not at those prices!
My husband’s main course and my potatoes arrived five minutes before my chicken. One third of my potatoes were burnt black on one side. They had not been turned during cooking. I would not have served them to anyone, but they did and charged us for it!
We left as soon as the mains were finished and I left the burnt potatoes to go back to the kitchen. Do you think they noticed? Not going back here.
Firstly the food. Just superb. A range of appealing specials which we attacked with vigour, and they delivered. Huge prawns beautifully presented and great tasting. Pizza which made me think I was in the heart of Napoli. Etc etc. Just marvellous stuff.
The service was similarly high-rate. The owner Marco is genuinely friendly and enthusiastic about his business and its customers. The attitude of his staff is no different. The one question mark is that it's certainly a curious venue. It's too big to feel personal and it does appear as though they've taken over from another business and failed to do anything but a few minor cosmetic touch-ups.
But- the food and service easily outweigh this issue. Definitely a place I'd return to.
We chose Sugo's for my 30th birthday: it's a good venue for an intimate dinner with friends or a larger group. The service was fantastic, the food was fabulous and reasonably priced (lots of variety, but all very Italian)...they even made some gluten free pasta for my friend (we called them in afternoon to let them know). I definitely plan to go back and try more of their specials.
One word for this restaurant-disappointing. My fiance and I booked here for valentines day based purely on positive reviews, though the lack of service we received ruined our evening. We had to wait 20 minutes for water (after we asked and told to be patient), then 35 minutes went by with nothing, no offer of drinks, food, nothing. I would not reccommend this restaurant to anyone, unless they are prepared to wait, and wait for service. All of the patrons around us were unsuccessfully trying to get the waiters attentions. We ended up leaving and headed to the 4 in Hand pub for steak and salad-which I would reccommend!
