Oh dear, really not great. Was a Thursday lunchtime. One of the waitresses was wonderful. The other one, miserable. A face like a dropped pie. Don't think I saw her smile once. Almost to the level of rude. As for the food, unremarkable. My terrine was ...OK. Can't even remember the main. The venue...OK. Don't rush there. Or if you do, go with measured expectations.
We decided to go to Sugaroom after being recommend by a friend as being a great dinner and show restaurant. We arrived a little later than six for which our booking was for and were concerned that we were going to be late for our show. The staff were quick and attentive, recognising that we were now on a tight time frame.
Our orders were taken, with wine recommended to match and shortly after were presented with a little something from the chef as an appetiser before our entrees arrived. My wife had the eschallot tart, and I devoured the duck liver parfait, before moving onto the blue eye and a huge steak wrapped in bacon. My steak perhaps could have been cooked a little more however it didn't last long! The blue had this parmesan and brioche crust, with immaculately presented vegetables all around.
Unfortunately due to time restraints we were unable to stay for dessert, however was presently suprised to receive a palate cleansing blood orange sorbet before we had to rush off. Will definitely be returning soon for the full three courses!!
We went there on a Saturday night having booked a few days earlier and they rang up on the day to confirm our booking again. The location is partially hidden and you have to keep walking down Harris St all the way down to the wharf area and turn left. The place has a nice ambience although as someone mentioned before, it is slightly too dark inside. Having done some research here and gone through the menu earlier on the website, we settled for the bouillabaisse and wagyu beef for the entree and the pan fried barramundi and pork confit for the main, we waved the nearest waiter to have our order taken.
Funny thing is, as I began to tell him the entrees, he fumbled around in his pockets, and then excused himself for a notepad to write on. After a few minutes, he came back and excused himself again and told us another waiter would be taking our order! With us being slightly amused, we waited for the next waiter, who seemed a bit more knowledgeable about the menu items and recommended a chardonnay for us to go with the fish and wagyu beef, although it was average to say at best.
The entrees eventually came and the wagyu beef are slightly seared and sliced in a way that they basically melt in your mouth - it was fantastic. The blue swimmer crab bouillabaisse came with toasted bread with olive oil, butter and a bit of chilli, both of which was good but I'd prefer the bouillabaisse to have a tiny bit more flavour in it. But coupled with the crab meat which tasted quite fresh, the flavour is maintained. The wagyu beef however, is the winner in the entrees.
After a bit of waiting, next came the mains. The barramundi was absolutely fabulous in texture and taste. The bottom is grilled so it is nice and crisp but the reverse side is soft, delicate and full of flavour. The pork confit was also soft and coupled with the apple puree, both together is a good complement to each other. It also comes with red cabbage which has a unique taste - either you like it or hate it, but I thought it coupled with the dish quite well.
After this fantastic round of food, we decided to head for the desserts and we flagged down the nearest waiter available and this happened to be the poor guy who was taking our orders first. Turned out it was his first day as he couldn't explain to us what a semifreddo was, so went away to ask and came back fumbling with the answer. We decided to go with the chocolate pudding and I highly recommend this to everyone. The chocolate is so rich and the pudding was one of the best I've ever tasted. The green tea ice cream had a bit of a minty flavour which again, was a nice complement to the dish. The table next to us kept eyeing our chocolate pudding and complementing how nice it looked.
Finally a hats off to Greg because it was an unforgettable dinner experience, although I wished the service could have been friendlier (some waiters looks like they just want to get the job over and done with) and we had wrong entrees and desserts delivered to our table (mixed up orders with another table). Otherwise, the prices are quite reasonable and you get good food for the money and I would definitely come back again with eagerness to try out the others on the menu.
Pleasant enough afternoon but not worth the price whatsoever! The view was possibly the only thing worth it. Everything was simply ok, no rush to go back anytime soon!
I dined here on Friday night with my partner. This is a really beautiful restaurant, and a perfect summer location. In winter it seems a little crowded, I suppose because usually half the restaurant would be seated outdoors. It is a very decently priced restaurant, considering the soaring food prices in Sydney at the moment.
For entree we had the bouillabaise, which was fantastic, and the duo of ocean trout which was a beautiful, light entree. Mains were the grain fed beef fillet, cooked perfectly at medium rare, and the pork which was really lovely too. Desserts were an apple crumble with a to die for caramel sauce, and a rich chocolate pudding.
Overall the service was very good. The waitstaff were able to answer questions easily, and were very efficient. My only complaint would be that it is very dark in the restaurant, which made the menus a little hard to read. Overall a great experience and will definitely be back!
We booked a function here for 24 people on a Saturday night. The best thing about functions here (as noted in other reviews) is that you can select from 3 choices of entrée, main and dessert and it is not alternate serve. They were slightly disorganised as the table was not set up for enough people and we had to stand for about ten minutes while they set up extra seats- the staff seemed very confused about it all and there was no apology for the wait/mistake (and we had the exact number of booked guests attending so it was not a mistake on our behalf).
It took some time before we were asked to order our drinks and again, the staff seemed slightly confused as to how to take drink orders for 24 people. Once ordered, the drinks then all came out promptly and our orders were also taken promptly (a criticism from some in the group was that they were not asked how they wanted their beef cooked- most came out medium rare which was not ideal for some).
As the group was rather hungry, there were some worried faces when the tiny entrees came out. Although all entrees were lovely, they were certainly too small. The duo of trout was refreshing and most enjoyed the Wagyu beef. The mains were more sizeable- the beef fillet was apparently exquisite and the trevalla pleasant but I wouldn’t have it again (not much flavor).
The desserts were sensational- the chocolate pudding with peppermint ice cream and fairy floss was an absolute delight and the panna cotta and apple and pecan crumble were also well received. Overall, everyone was pleasantly full by the end of the meal and most agreed the quality (but certainly not quantity) of the food justified $60 a head.
The only real let down was the service. The waitresses were particularly rude and harshly accused us of moving places (and we hadn’t) when they had served the entrees to the wrong people. The bartender and Maitre d’ were both more friendly but overall, the staff seemed as though they didn’t want to be there.
Would possibly go back again during the day as the location is great (a cozy little end of Pyrmont) but would probably only have a dessert and coffee.
** Amazing, we had a function here where EVERY guest could order their own meal (not alternate drop) and you could select 3 entrees and 3 mains, plus a vegetarian entree and vegetarian main option **
This is a place I recommend to a lot of people for a date, family dinner, or to impress out-of-towners. Firstly, the waterside location is a delight, even though it's not commanding a view of the major icons of Sydney, it lacks the noisy vehicular and pedestrian traffic of other harbourside joints. It also has clean, crisp, chic decor and well presented staff (from about 6 different countries).
The first visit was a pre-show dinner for four, the second, a lunch to plan the third, an outdoor function for 50 people. They handled the function very well and I am amazed how cheap it was ($60 for arrival appetisers, entree, and main) (the alcohol is not cheap, it's more standard price but good quality and range). Of note was coincident function indoors, obviously they can handle 100+ people easily.
Guests were uniformly delighted by the food quality and most of them couldn't eat everything. Finally, the manager on the night was obviously in control of the situation, and the function manager did a good job staying in contact both before and after the date itself. Excellent.
Everything I have eaten here I enjoyed. Perhaps, the only thing to note (which other reviewers on the site mention, too) is that the portions are relatively small. I have been satisfied, I'd rather pay slightly less and get the slightly smaller serving. You do get lovely free bread, and you can also enjoy a side dish, or you can have room for dessert.
My partner and I came here for a special dinner and it certainly was that! Nice setting (looks over the car yard but at night you can't tell... you just see the lights glinting over the water). Service was very good and the food was delicious!
I had the special roast lamb which was cooked beautifully and was a pretty good size. My partner had the beef fillet in bacon and really liked it. We also had two side dishes and couldn't finish the whole meal (sides of green beans with parmesan and herbs and hand cut potato chips with garlic aioli... who knew green beans could taste so delicious?!). Highly recommend the chocolate pudding dessert too.
Value for money was pretty good, we had 2 mains, 2 sides, 2 desserts, 2 glasses of wine and a coffee and the bill came to $130. Really enjoyed the experience and will most definitely be coming back!
We came here for dinner on Friday night from a recommendation of a friend. We enjoyed everything, we had a lovely waitress who was professional and friendly at the same time, rare for Sydney restaurants!
The food was lovely, however, the portions were very disappointing. I wish the waitress would have told us that ordering sides was a must because all that came out on our plates were a few small pieces of lamb and a little ratatouille. We were pretty hungry but annoyed so we payed out bill and went to have dessert elsewhere. Definitely won't be coming back.
