Had a lovely experience at subsolo on a Thursday evening.
Food - We have the vegetarian paella, and portuguese chicken on a skewer. The food was quite lovely, although the vegetarian paella was not as dry as I would have liked. The skewer was a lovely concept, and was accompanied with some sides - beans, wedges and a light salad.
Ambience - The decor of the restaurant was chic and contemporary. Great colour scheme, with a relaxed vibe. The ambience was intimate, and there was no problem with noise levels despite the resaurant being quite busy.
Service - Had some problems with service at the beginning and end of our meal, it took some time to find a waiter to take our order, and to pay for the bill.
Value - We enjoyed a substantial meal for 2, which totalled to $81 (included a glass of wine for each guest as well). A good feed for a reasonable price.
I like the decor and ambience of Subsolo. I have been here twice now and have enjoyed both occasions. The food is good particularly the prawn and jamon skewers although the desserts sometimes miss the mark. Overall I would recommend.
Great basement location, interesting menu- lots of options. Trendy place to grab a drink with tapas or to spend the night ordering platefuls of interesting food. Cool wine list, some good wines by the glass. Well spaced out room, with some more private tables towards the back of the restaurant. A stand out in this area of the city.
Love the sangrias, food is always nice and I really like the atmosphere, a pleasant surprise was when we went mid week and there was some live music, very nice. I don’t like there wine list and everything is a bit overpriced, but still a really good venue.
Coming from an Iberian background I wanted to see what the hype was about. Let me tell you that this is easily the best Spanish or Portuguese restaurant in Sydney if not Australia. The food is excellent, presentation superb, flavours fabulous and the value is above average. The staff went out of their way all night to serve us and the welcome we got on the way in and the way out was enough in itself to make us want to go back regularly.
Not only was the staff great but the lady on the door last Friday night (with the black framed glasses) needs to be awarded a medal for divine customer service. The place was bursting at the seams and she gave us all a glass wine and olives on the house whilst we waited for a table. Tell me where you get that kind of service? All up a brilliant night and can't wait to go back. The whole vibrant feeling of the place is out of this world (well out of Sydney at least!) 10 out of 10!
I had a dinner with my girlfriends on Saturday and made a reservation for 7.00 - 7.30 dining. From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted with a smile but were asked if we had a reservation booked and said yes under one of the girl's name which I won't mention in this case. They were then unable to find our reservation until we told them we had called and spoke to someone in particular to book this. They then realised that they had put us on the 08.00pm reservation and not the earlier one. That was the first disappointment.
Secondly, we ordered a bottle of wine at the start of the night. Then started ordering entree's and main meals. We had our entrees served with 3 breads (there were 5 of us) so we asked if could order 2 more the same bread as what had been served. This did not come until we received our main meals (which was an hour later!). We also ordered some Sangriyas at the same time as we asked for more bread and there was a huge delay in getting this to us.
We had followed this up with one of the waitstaff and it was mentioned they had forgotten to serve this to us. Not only the service turnaround was a delay, the service and the communication between your staff on Saturday was the biggest disappointment as I have never experienced this kind of treatment from other restaurants I had been to. To think you were awarded the best Spanish restaurant for the 2008-09.
To top it all, once we had paid our bill and walked out of the restaurant, we were chased by the restaurant senior staff ensuring we had paid for our bill. Why didn't he check this with his staff prior to chasing us to save himself from embarrassment. Does this mean he had been watching us the whole time and had become suspicious that we weren't going to pay our dinner? Was that why we were getting a different treatment from the staff?
Your staff may need some further training in terms of customer service and communication as this is not an acceptable behaviour.
I did not like the ambience, décor is boring and there was no music so I can hear everybody talking. Food is great though. Service was terrible. I was so disappointed!
Insanely awesome little venue! Great underground location, brilliant staff, the food is incredible (love the complimentary olive bread), creme brulee was one of the best I have ever had. Only complaint was drinks overpriced but value of food made up for it!
What a great spot for a small group of friends after work to have a lovely glass of wine and some delicious tapas. I loved the vibe, the company and the wine list is quite extensive and surprisingly not overpriced. There were 5 of us and we ordered a few of the entree size tapas which was more than enough food. The only thing that I would miss out on next time is the paella, compared to the rest of the food this was a little below expectation.
I can’t rave about it enough and will definitely be heading back to Sub Solo especially during the cooler months.
What a fantastic addition for the Sydney scene! As others have pointed out, nothing is too much trouble at all for this place and the food lives up to the service. Great space and very warm with atmosphere! something rare for Sydney! brilliant. Highly recommend it, but you have to have the meat swords, it's a speciality and it is fabulous!
