My friends and I have never experienced such rude service. From the initial curt query "Are you sure you have the right restaurant?!" because my friends had not yet arrived to the repeated instance that we had been given a wine menu (it looks the same as the food menu) despite the fact we had checked all the menus on our table and had already asked for a wine menu three times.
There was a horrified and angry reaction when an additional person arrived, despite the fact that there was more than enough room on the table to accommodate one more person, the restaurant was nearly empty and you would think that an additional person ordering food would be a good thing.
I can understand one staff member being in a bad mood but more than one is certainly enough to ruin a pleasant dining experience. I am patient when it comes to slow service but rude, angry and an attitude of "I'm doing you a favour" is just bizarre. Not to tar everyone with the same brush, the barman who served us our drinks was very friendly and polite.
It is a shame because the restaurant space and decor is lovely and the food was very good. It is close to work and were it not for the rude service, we would have gone back.
The first few minutes are the best, then its all down hill from there. Great decor and setting, exceptional toilets. Really noisy crowd on the night, so bring ear plugs. As for the food, nothing spectacular, small servings and over priced. Nothing to make you want to return. And most of all, I'm not a fussy eater.
Absolutely fantastic. In line with human nature, I'm rarely inspired to add a positive comment about a restaurant on eatability, and will only post a truly awful experience.
However, this was just beautiful, and an amazing place to take my wife for her birthday. The food is beautifully prepared and presented wonderfully. The ambience is great, something original for Sydney, a 5 star restaurant but with a touch of character, yes like the New York bars I have been to. Service is just wonderful, reminiscent of what we used to aim to offer when I worked at the Park Hyatt, but executed better for much lower prices! Nice cocktails, reasonable vegetarian selection, and all round a great experience.
I cannot fathom how this restaurant has the same eatability score as Spanish Terrazas, one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had in Sydney, possibly ever! Do yourselves a favour, spend the extra $5 a head (or less!) and go to Subsolo.
I booked Subsolo with the help of booking angel, a lovely, easy process. We visited last night on Friday for my partners birthday and we both absolutely loved it! The degustation menu is highly recommended with a delightful mixed selection of matching Spanish wines. The selection of food was fantastic. The timing of each course was perfect. We dined many dishes including stuffed calamari with paella which was full of flavour and very tender. The quail with a beautiful thick rich sauce and poached pear was my favourite.
Thank you to our waiter who made our night, explaining the wines and their origin, was very attentive to our needs and was subtle at the right times. I couldn't ask for a better experience. Thank you Jacqui and chefs, your food was incredible. We will most definitely return.
This eatery offers Modern Spanish cuisine that really is far from the authentic cuisine from Spain. The food is not the best quality; portions are quite small and overall pricing is expensive.
Whilst the ambience is modern, it should have more of a Meditteranean feel to it.
There's nothing better than going to Spain for fine cuisine, that is reasonably priced.
As you walk down the stairs to the restaurant you are impressed with the chic interior, red tones and drapes with subdued lighting.
Even after reading the reviews I wasn't sure what to expect and while the interior and service was good the food (highlight would have been the portugese chicken espetadas) it was overpriced and I would probably head to liverpool street for spanish food next time. But tonight was more about the company rather than the food.
I tried their $55 degustation menu, try it!!, and you will not regret it I promise. Good value and excellent food. My favorites were the squids and Portuguese chicken. Well done you guys!!
We recently went here for my birthday and it turned out to be one of the best dinners I ever had here in Sydney. We enjoyed one of their degustation menues with matching wines, and all the courses were absolutely amazing and actually gave you something to talk about during the meal. The Spanish wines matched perfectly well and their whole wine list is very exciting. Atmosphere is also very nice and gives you a cozy feeling, nice interior design and layout.
Staff was knowledgable and friendly, and explained every single course to us. Only negative are the prices, it's extremely expensive and the portions aren't really generous so I wouldn't go there on a normal weekend. Great for special occasions or corporate dinners though (they have great little separate corners for groups that make you feel like you're the only one in the restaurant).
I had the $75 degustation menu at Subsolo last night. It was easily the best Spanish food I've had in Sydney. I did not have an issue with serving sizes - in fact I doubt I have eaten so much in my life. Service was fantastic and the tapas was served promptly. Highly recommended.
