Why are people so stupid! It's not how much you get on your plate. It's the quality and taste of the food on your plate and the food at Strangers is always delicious, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. The place sells its self as a local bistro and not a 5-star restaurant even though the food is cooked with far more passion and caring than most silver service places in Sydney at the moment.
Ignore the moron's and try Strangers with Candy. If you're the sort of person who is impressed by designer toilets in your eating establishment then, perhaps, Stangers is not for you. However, if you enjoy top quality produce cooked with innovation and love than I'm sure like me you will be a regular at Strangers With Candy.
Oh my goodness, what a find! Absolutely lovely service (how they continued to smile with we 5 carrying on last night I'll never know!). We shared the salmon tartare and the pate, lovely, my other half had the best semolina gnocchi he'd ever had, then to the mains, my duck confit was purrrrrrfect, crispy skin, lovely falling apart flesh and the jus was just magnificent.
Others had the crabmeat pasta, the pork and the wagyu corned beef, all beautiful (yes, we did share!). Then the desserts, which we didn't really need as the servings thus far were plentiful, ahh the desserts, the meringue with passionfruit was a sensation in my mouth, with the creme brulee with rhubarb, chocky cake and vanilla pudding all having similar effect on the rest of the party!
With BYO this made for a very reasonably priced evening. We will definitely be back (sorry front of house staff! :D hehe)
Ambience and service was lovely. Very cosy. Was disappointed with my duck confit, the skin wasn't crispy and it tasted a bit dry. The pork neck was lovely and so was the pasta dish. The choc fudge cake was nice although I think the vanilla pudding is better. For the prices, I expected more.
What a fantastic restaurant. Lucinda our waitress almost faultless and just lovely. The food was outstanding. I had the salmon tartare followed by a wagyu silverside. This was not as good as some of the others on the table, but still brilliant. My vanilla pudding was just delicious. Gorgeous ambience - perfect on a windy wet night.
I absolutely love this place. I am amazed that some find this restaurant poor value. We paid $75 a head for 3 courses + coffee and the food was truly excellent.
Can't wait to go back.
I want to like Strangers with Candy more, I really do. My first impressions: quaint, cosy and almost old world. However, I really think for the prices you can do more than shove an old rinnai heater with one bar working out in the courtyard to keep the autumn chill at bay, and stick colouring in book pages on the toilet walls as make-shift wallpaper, although I was quite intrigued to learn some of the various breed of chickens from a country women's magazine posted at the back of the toilet, the Buxom chook is quite an attractive breed.
It adds to the ambience and charm you say, well yes. I found the wait staff at first to be slightly befuddling, albeit very friendly. We ordered a starter which we didn't get, then two entrees wrongly placed at our table and then taken away and placed on the table behind. We had 2 wait staff and only 11 people eating out in the courtyard area. How confusing should it get?
Also I don't quite get for example how at 7:30 you cannot have any of the signature mains left (tea smoked Atlantic salmon with panzanella and goats cheese salad), and I also don't quite get why there is a "rule" as to a limit of 2 orders per table of the spaghettini with blue swimmer crab black mussels and gremolata. What's with the Seafood Police? On the positive, I really enjoyed my starter of roast pork belly, and I also enjoyed the sesame lemon grass broth with enoki and shiitake mushrooms with a side of coriander pesto my steamed prawn wonton dumplings came in. Although I found the dumpling filling was slightly rubbery.
There is also a great salad special at the moment, cabbage with garlic croutons and raisins. It's creamy, but toothsome and really quite delicious. The sorbet is standout (chocolate ooh la la) and I also enjoyed tasting the rich and fudgy chocolate cake my dinner guest had, very moreish and, perhaps, recommended to share (unless you are a chocoholic like me).
Comparing Strangers to other restaurants in the area, we have recently gone off Strangers due to the fact we feel that you don't get value for money. The only real positive is the food and sometimes the service. They only allow cash payment, don't offer air conditioning, don't change their menu and you are told to leave at 10 pm because they want to go home. We wouldn't mind going without air conditioning, comfortable chairs and paying cash if their prices weren't as high as they are.
Had a really good night here. We hadn't been in quite a while (at lease 18 months) but the waitress remembered us, which was really welcoming. The food was good, I was a little disappointed as I am a non sea food eater I was only left the vegetarian option or a wagu beef or pork neck. But the vego options were still very good. The other in the group (who all had sea food) really enjoyed theirs.
Will be back again soon!
Not only is this restaurant 'better than eating at home', my very fussy diabetic father had a perfect reading after eating there. This means that the food is fresh and not laden with sugar or salt or carbs! We love it. It is 'the best bit of Melbourne style excellent dining' without the terrible weather. Ask for a window seat and look at the garden while you snack and sip and yap!
A group of 4 visited on a very quite wednesday night, after placing our orders the waitress came back and told us that a certain dish had only one portion left. As we had already ordered 2 of the special dishes on offer we were told we could not order another one of the specials as there was a 2 special order per table. Not very good business sense with an empty room you would think. The waitress was more interested in selling a sub standard serving of vegetables for the table to share. As we eat out frequently do your self a favour and walk up the road to others.

YAY, welcome back everybody....first night after over 3 weeks off is always a bit tricky....I LOVE LOVE LOVE to jump into my kitchen after such a long holiday and make everything fresh from scratch......My crystal ball takes a bit more time to shake off the sun and sand, bloody useless in aiding my prediction for first night back lotto!!!!
It is so fantastic to bring home grown vegetables from our farm to the menu, totally hand raised and loved, tenaciously de- grubbed every night....it was so rewarding after so many months of frost, possums, Hitchcockian flock air raids and then hideous heat and now very little water...but hey, I love my zucchini, I know where they have been, and where I want them to go.....the peas, herbs and much more all organic and hand picked, I really love my business and thank all that can feel the love!!!!
After having booked ahead when we arrived a large portion of the menu was unavailable.. leaving not much more than the breakfast menu in fact. We ordered a dip selection (not very special.. except the price). The waitress informed us that yet another menu item we had ordered was no longer available meaning that we ended up having two breakfasts and a chicken caesar salad ($20) and some shakes juices..(for 3 people), the total cost was 82 dollars for breakfast !!!
The poached eggs I had were undercooked and the breakfast was on the whole overpriced ($9.50 for the eggs alone) $3.50 for each extra, bacon, mushrooms etc. so a breakfast you get in most Sydney places can easy top 20 dollars And the breakfast was certainly Not Value for money which by the way is cash only.
Oh and I forgot to mention the waitress was less than interested in her work. She placed an overfull milkshake on the table, it poured over the side down the gaps in the garden furniture we were seated at and stained a handbag underneath.
Next time I want to spend 82 dollars on breakfast, it will not be at this establishment. I can only assume we came at a bad time. The ratings for this place would indicate better quality, they certainly charge for it!!!!

3x friends call and say they will arrive 1/2 hour before you are leaving on a 3 week holiday....
