This is a great find and I’ll keep coming back. Generally I find only 1 or 2 things on a menu that I want to eat but here I just couldn’t decide: I wanted to try everything. We started with the Thai chicken on betel leaves and the dip plate which was, thankfully, not the usual boring selection. Beetroot relish and a spicy lentil dahl were perfect palate tempters. Sadly our table chose not to have entrees, I was looking forward to trying the pork belly with papaya. Or the sherry cured salmon with horseradish.
For main I chose the barramundi, interested to see how it was done. I’m usually disappointed with barramundi but this was fantastic. It was served in a hot fragrant broth in a paper packet with a coconut ginger and lime custard on the side. The custard was a perfect flavour foil to the fish. The silky texture of the custard was luscious with just the right level of tartness. My partner had the duck and it was melt-in-the-mouth heavenly. Our table tried all the desserts and they were sensational. All you could hear was a series of oohs and aahs accompanied by much head nodding and smiles.
The service is attentive and friendly and despite the smallness of the place we didn’t notice other diners’ conversations. The tea lights on the tables add to the relaxed ambience. So much so that we didn’t leave till well after pumpkin hour. We’ll definitely be back to sample more things on the menu.
Went there on a Friday night with a friend, and for the 1st time left a little disappointed. For the starter we both tried the special which was thai chicken on betel nut leaves were actually quite tasty.
For the main my friend ordered the twice cooked pork neck, which he said was excellent. For my main I ordered Spaghettini w/blue swimmer crab meat, chilli and black mussels, which was disappointing as it wasn't spaghettini but just plain spaghetti, which seemed to take away the flavours of the crab meat and the mussels and left it tasting quite bland.
For dessert my friend ordered the Pavlova which he also quite enjoyed. So for me the food wasn't up to its normal standard. But as always the service was great, most attentive. I will go again and hope for a better meal.
Extrememly accommodating wait-staff and even better food. Fresh ingredients are used in all dishes. Book in advance though as you will not find a seat spare last minute.
The food was nice but overpriced, we ordered some Italian bread for $16.00 and thought we would get something simliar to bruschetta. Unfortunately we were served 1 piece of bread with a small serving of balsamic and oil! When we politely asked why one piece of bread would be $16 and if we were served the wrong item, the waitress replied the bread was homemade.
Mains were nice but a small portions and desserts were very very nice! Probably won't go back due to our table being shocked of paying $16 each just for bread!!! BTW there was nothing outstanding about the bread it was average!
Response from Management:
This sounds like a simple human error as we have hand written bills and no point of sale electronic system, I am sorry you feel this happened to you and your friends intentionally.
Our Italian bread is from Leichardt, it is served with Little General EVO and aged Balsamic and is clearly priced at $1.00 per portion on both lunch and dinner menus. Unfortunately none of my staff can recall being questioned about the price of our bread, as I only have 3 floor staff they were all shocked to read the print out of this complaint.....but then again they are quite often run off their feet and maybe did not hear your concern correctly.
Please feel free to call me during business hours as I think I may know when you and your friends may have been 'stung' unintentionally......but without more information I can not be sure.
Yours sincerely
Veronica Stute chef/owner
ps. if i had been charged $16.00 for one slice of bread I would have had the bill framed...do you still have the bill?
We used to love this place when Brett was the main waiter/manager but now that he is gone, Strangers has lost its atmosphere for us. No longer are we greeted with cheerfulness and warmth at the door. The new head waiter is sweet but she is not as genuine in her warmth.
On the culinary side, food is still good but while prices are remain the same, I have noticed a decrease in portion size. The home made muffins are to die for....though my one last week was a bit on the burnt side. We love the virgin mary's as well as the coffee here.
Overall, Strangers is still an enjoyable weekend brunch venue for us but we don't tend to frequent as much as we used to.
What a great little place - 2 parts the front and back, feels like someone's home. The food is exceptional, try the beetle leaf entree, wish I had the recipe - superb. They are tough on the portions - ie. "we only have 2 of these tonight", but that means they also have integrity about the food. One of our favourite places - casual but tasty.
Why have I left it so long to sample this place? Mid week dinner with Neecy, Shultzy, Lucy, Wall-e, the Weeds and uncle and auntie Festa saw us nestled around a cozy table at the front of this welcoming restaurant.
I rated the service a 10 due to the unobtrusive yet warm and extremely competant attention we were provided - never once did I need to request anything, my glass of water & wine were constantly full, I always had a clean serviette, food was delivered and empty plates removed without my noticing - superb service from a very nice lady (no relation). Yes one may also receive this type of service from other restaurants however, this place provides it with sincerity.
The food was delicious and supplied with just the right amount - I had the lamb shank & vegie pie, while Neecy had the salmon - Shultzy had his usual, the duck. The desserts? well what a sensational tasting experience! Even Auntie festa celebrating a belated 59th b'day could not contain herself when the dessert arrived.
Neecy and I will be returning to this place again - perhaps to sample their breakfast next time. Oh by the way, their coffee was great also. Definitely a winner - why did I leave it so long.
Excellent little place for breakfast or lunch - good coffee and a great selection of evil cakes, great light in the room and friendly staff. Had the mussel broth followed by the spaghetti with crab meat and (more) mussels... all fantastic. The barra was excellent, as was the prawn wonton entree.
A great find, only a few tables but everything done well. Sydney needs more of these great little cafes.
How does one start with such a fantastic little restaurant? My partner and I held an event last weekend in the courtyard and Justin and his team lived up to our expectation and perhaps even surpassed them.
He was extremely accommodating to our many (sometimes unusual) requests. All 18 of my guests complimented the food and service and timing of food was impeccable. Kudos to the waitresses who had to put up with my friends swapping seats after the main course.
Having more than a certain number of people for the event, we had to go with the set menu which certainly did not disappoint. The delectable entree platter just keeps on giving, some friends asked "Is the main course already?"
The quality was continued on with the main courses, all choices of tea smoked salmon, pork neck, ricotta ravioli and wagyu silverside. My friends were "ooh-ing" and "ahh-ing" and every single plate was almost wiped clean. And just three words for the dessert, chocolate fudge cake! You'll know what I mean when you try it.
Thanks again to SWC and Justin for making it such a memorable event for my partner and I.
