We had a wonderful dinner last saturday night. Everything was nice. The service was really friendly. The entree, the main and the desserts were exceptional. I highly recommend this place.
Wake up Call. Our first and last trip to Bistro Stock. In this day and age when a diner presents with an allergy it is time to take the necessary steps to ensure all steps are taken to avoid exposure.
My wife suffers from an egg allergy. We communicated this very clearly to the staff upon arrival, including the consequences of exposure. After ordering a meal which was not likely in any form to have egg included we asked the waiter to check with the kitchen. The waiter returned to assure us that my wife would be safe.
Three bites of the meal and she was beginning to get very ill. After visiting the bathroom, we had a visit by someone trying to deny liability. (I might add at this point that she does not suffer ay other allergies).
Bistro Stock, when someone presents with an allergy, the kitchen needs to be informed. The waiting staff needs to question the extent of the allergy and communicate this to the kitchen. The kitchen then needs to take all necessary steps to ensure that contamination does not occur including cross contamination through utensils. If this is inconvenient then please say so and we would have been glad to eat elsewhere.
Thank you for ruining our evening, sending us to Balmain Hospital for 4 hours and putting our unborn baby as well as my wife at risk. Yes, my wife is visibly pregnant at 7 months.
4 of us went here last night as a result of walking out on our restaurant booking elsewhere because of the table positioning and lack of space. Boy were we glad we discovered this place and although it was very busy they found us a great table. The service was really friendly, the food was exceptional especially the duck salad for entree. We'll certainly be coming back and will be recommending it to our friends.
Credit where credit is due. Bistro Stock was a restaurant I always raved about to others, but it has probably been 18 months since my last visit. So reading the comments on this site the other day had me very much doubting my decision to eat there tonight: new management, decline in service, food and value etc.
I don't doubt the validity of any of the previous comments, but having 'stayed the course' and gone to the restaurant despite the reviews, I was well and truly vindicated. I had a great night. The food was of high quality, the service was really friendly and unobtrusive, and there remains very few places in the area with the atmosphere as Bistro Stock - it's a top venue. I've lived in the area for a number of years, and while there are plenty of culinary options in Rozelle - Balmain, it's definitely a case of quantity over quality.
Stock may not be the place it once was, but it still stacks up very well for the area and in its own right. And the overall experience, for me at least, was excellent, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to those who, like me, may have been put off by the comments of others. Let me add, I can assure you that I write this with no vested interest!
Stopped by my Balmain fave the other night for dessert. Good news: they've gotten rid of the head waiter so now there's nothing to stop you enjoying your meal (or just dessert) there. I was one of the many who found the guy irritating, and was so pleased to discover that it is safe to return! I'm a sucker for anything with white chocolate in it, and the white choc mousse didn't disappoint - delicious with a wonderfully tart raspberry coulis. I would have tried my companions' caramel creme brulee but neither of them would let me get close so I'll just have to take their word for it that it was as good as it looked.
I've been coming here for ages. The new owners and management are great. They couldn't do enough for us. The food has come on leaps and bounds over the last few months congrats and good luck.
We'd been to Stock several times before December and it was always very good.
However, we returned recently to find it had changed hands.
What a disappointment, it's now considerably worse! The food and service is not good. There's no welcoming voice message on the answer machine if you want to book a table.
The decor/ambience/pipedmusic is AWFUL. The head waiter is an absolute idiot - I agree with other reviewers -a young Basil Fawlty. Ah well .....we just have to wait until it goes bust and we'll get another new restaurant in Balmain.
We went to Stock last night and won't be returning. The food was ok, the service was on the bad side of ok, and the lighting was far too bright. The staff seem incredibly inexperienced and would have been better suited to working in a cafe.
The wierdest part of the evening was the head waiter? or owner? who approached our table intermittently throughout the night with Basil Fawlty-like comments and behaviour. It's really unfortunate because working and living in the area we had heard so many good things about this place. Wish them all the best in making the necessary changes and improvements! Step 1 - Lose Basil!!!!!
Bistro Stock is easily the best restaurant in Balmain. I have been there around 5 times and never been disappointed. In fact, I always indulge in the full 3 courses as it all tastes so good!
