This is a good solid watered down version of what you can expect if you ate in a restaurant in Seoul. Interestingly enough there are two areas to this restaurant which reflect the modern day and the traditional restaurants. Whether they have consciously done this or this is how things have worked out, I'm not sure. Through to the back of the restaurant, you get a very traditional old style Korean eating experience.
In Seoul there are thousands of what are called 'Pojang Macha.' These are very basic and are large tents on the roadside. Concrete floors, basic furniture, smoky, warm (great in the freezing Korean winters) and a lively atmosphere. The back section of Ssam is very reflective of this kind of meal experience. However, eat in the front of the restaurant, and you are transported to the modern style restaurant, with newer more comfortable furnishings and the extraction systems hanging from the ceiling to suck away all the smoke caused by the BBQ at your table.
My preference is for the back room, but be warned, as per most Korean BBQ restaurants, your clothes will stink when you get home. The food here is of a good solid standard. It never differs. It's not spectacular, but still tasty, and you will always finish up full and satisfied. My only gripe, and this goes to the majority of Korean restaurants in Sydney, is this tendency to 'westernise' the food in a fusion style offerings.
Surely as Korean as possible in a Korean restaurant would be the best? Some of the food on offer here I have never, and would never see in Seoul. I lived in Seoul for 3 years by the way. So all in all, I'd recommend it. You can read my other reviews of Korean restaurants on this site. Ssam figures very highly.
My partner and I love this place. We live in the area and it's a great place to have a delicious meal on the way home. Reasonably priced, the staff are always lovely, the food is delicious and served in generous proportions.
We always have the dumplings, special scotch beef (with the dipping salt!) and the bulgogi. My favourite part of the meal is the cold cinnamon tea that they always bring out at the end, so refreshing! I also recommend the green plum tea, especially on cold winter nights.
Love this place - my partner and I try to go every couple of weeks. The food is simple and delicious, the quality and quantity stays the same. Price is good - about $40 for both of us including a beer or two. I highly recommend it!
I do like this resturant but feel there are many better Korean bbq places. SSAM is quite westernised (with iceberg lettuce) and no kimchi pancakes - though this is quite understandable given the location. It is great for big parties and the staff are really helpful. I have lived in Korea, and love the food so for me it is hard to find a disappointing Korean restaurant. SSAM is great value for money, good location and an excellent introduction to Korean food!
I love this place. Unlike some other reviewers I like the fact that the staff come and help with the cooking. I love an interactive dining experience, but lets be honest, sometimes the distraction of good company and wine can lead to burnt dinner, so the extra attention paid by the staff is definately appreciated! The food is always so tasty and fresh. I am a very fussy eater when it comes to meat and I always find theirs to be so tender and flavoursome.
All the little side salad and kimchi dishes are so tasty. They never look like much but we always end up full! Probably not the most attractive restaurant, but I don't go there for that. Its a great place to go to have a hands on meal, thats interactive, communal and great to do in a group. You can be loud and not feel as if you're disturbing anyone.
Its casual and friendly. I definitely recommend! Been many times and will be back. Its always value for $$, most I ever paid was $25 per person and that included drinks and we were stuffed by the end. Great place.
We have two children (13 and 16) who think going to dinner as a family is pretty disgusting. We often go out expecting fights and/or boredom so we were thrilled when the kids actually enjoyed themselves!! Cooking their own food kept them busy and the overall experience was a good one. The cost was just under $100 for the four of us, so not bad value-wise and we all left feeling pretty full. The staff are not that friendly and the food was nothing to rave about, but we had a good night and would definitely go there again.
I love going to Korean BBQ's and I find the food here really average. I think it is good quality meat but it is bland with not very much seasoning. I also find the staff annoying, I rarely eat meat and when I do I want it burnt. The staff always come over and start moving things around and taking it off the hot plate without asking, even though I am not smoking the place up. The food is also very minimal. You have to order 3 mains for 2 people to be satisfied, not full. I only go occassionally for something different in Newtown - where I live, wouldn't recommend it though.
Despite being almost an hour late due to traffic for our booking, we were seated straight away, and treated to an amazing meal. Great food, helpful staff (we felt like stupid "round-eyes" a few times, not entirely sure what to cook when - but the staff would quietly and politely correct our mistakes). Great value too, $25 each for 4 people, including a couple of beers/wines each. Kim chee is food of the gods.
Korean BBQ taste the same everywhere but the quality of the meat is what varies. The meat at this place was too tough. It also got very smokey - so don't wear dry clean only top! The place is average but somewhere different to go in Newtown if you've had enough Thai.
