Very nice restaurant. Very unique decoration, quite Chinese. What impressed most was their food, it was real szechuan food, cause I've been to chengdu and tasted mapo toufu. It is exactly the same and the fish with noodles with red capsicum, tasty and yummy. It's quite busy saturday night but do get a booking it would be better..
Before I went here I had read the reviews. Whilst slightly put off I decided to soldier on. Luckily, fate intervened and my friends and I all had a marvelous time.
Interior decorating aside (at least it's clean and spacious which is something to be said for Northern Chinese joints, been to Ashfield lately?) and the lighting, which is quite bright, so not for your romantic trysts, this place had some pretty intense flavours at reasonable prices.
The standout was the Eggplant 'cold dish' which sent the lazy susan spinning off it's rails, and the lamb (which may be a bit gamey for some). Dessert of black sesame balls with peanut coating were delicious! (I haven't had these in about 5 years so I was stoked!).
Service whilst not overly friendly, was attentive and very efficient. The main waitress even came around towards the end of the meal to have a chat with us and to make sure we were happy with everything (we were). Maybe they've read the reviews, but they were anything but rushing us out the door.
Would definitely come back, hmm maybe even this week?!
The decor is obviously overdone. Are they trying to out shine the whole Chinatown with this lavish fit out and wares, but less substance. What Chinese restaurant normally neglects is its service. Forget about the look! just don't rush to present me the bill without my request. It happened as soon as we finished the meal. So off we go better enjoy our time at one of the cafe next door.
Service: Unimpressed with service from the moment we walked in the door. Waitress seemed to have an attitude problem with finding a table for six people at 6pm on Saturday night, and restaurant is not even full then. Tried to order a hotpot and told there's a 30mins waiting time.
The bill came and table was cleared very quickly as soon as the last person finished his meal. Meanwhile, the waitress tried half-apologising for the bill as they needed the table for another group of diners. Presented a credit card for payment and was told there’s a 2.5% surcharge!! Credit card receipt was presented for signing while on the way out as we have been removed from our table by then.
Ambience: Joanna Savill described it perfectly as gaudily unsubtle. I prefer a dining place that is simple and unpretentious in its decoration without going over the top. Case in point are the large Chinese paintings hanging crooked against the wall. Doesn't seem like the restaurant take pride in its own appearance.
Food: I suggest people go and try other Szechuan and Chinese restaurants first to see what Chinese cooking is really about. I've tasted better Szechuan cooking even in mainland China.
Majority of restaurant's clientele may appear to be of the same ethnicity as the cuisine but that's because they haven't been to other much better Szechuan/Chinese restaurants.
Value: Overly rated for the price paid and serving size is nothing to speak of.
I would not recommend anyone to go there. We went there last week to have dinner, we found that not only the food is lousy but the staff is very very very rude. We wanted to order some more dishes but the waiter told us we couldn't order anymore as there're people waiting and asked us to leave.
Furthermore, while we're waiting for our bill, they asked us to stand and wait outside for the bill. We're so upset and not happy. The management there is so money minded, don't care about the service and no hospitality. I would never never go there again.
Great restaurant with really interesting dishes. The fish in chilli oil was particularly delicious, just don't eat the peppers! Would definitely go back again to try more of their dishes! Good place to go with lots of people so you can order a variety of dishes.
I love this place! Unlike some other Sichuan restaurant that put so many chilli and peppercorns your head would explode, this place doesn't go nuts with the chilli. I always have the cold sliced beef for my entree or cold pork with garlic sauce. Love them both!
For mains, I love the spicy fish soup (warning, the serving is HUGE!). Also had chicken with dry chilli (again, the serving is massive!). The spring onion pancake was also delicious, perfect if dipped with sauces from the cold dishes. Never spent more than $20 per person but I left the restaurant feeling bloated every time. I love the ambience, love the settings, love the utensils (the tea cup is so adorable), the service is always excellent, good value for money, what more could you ask for?
