When I first moved to Newtown I used to go to Sole Espresso quite often for breakfast (I never tried the tapas or the wine).

The food was always good there, but it's quite pretentious when you really think about it. What's wrong with just bacon, eggs and toast. Why does it have to be this work of art?. The food is quite expensive here as well for what you pay and the portions are not that big compared to other cafe's.

It's a nice looking place though, it's never ram packed so you will always find a seat and the staff are reasonably friendly, most of them are backpackers so they don't really understand my english humor. I would recommend coming here but only if you have the money.

For the same price and for double the portion size you can head up to Cafe C or cross the street to Cafe Newtown.

Ok, I am going to put a disclaimer here, this only applies for the breakfast. I haven't been here for dinner/tapas or wine. Saying this, I did come here one morning. The coffee, I must say, is great. The ambience is excellent, laidback with the huge armchairs and sofas. The service is fine, pretty casual, a little non-chalant and unconcerned.

I ordered char-grilled bacon with poached eggs. When my meal came, there was no bacon. I enquired about this. After apologising profusely, the char-grilled bacon was on its way.

When the bacon arrived, I was extremely disappointed. The "char-grilled" bacon was pale, with no semblance of any brown (let-alone char grilling), it seemed like it was boiled/heated through. The rind was just too chewy. I also ordered some loose leaf english breakfast tea on the menu for $4 and received an exquisite teapot with a typical teabag within. If I had known that, I would have ordered the coffee!

I have also ordered sandwiches before, which are pretty good. The prices themselves are a little on the expensive side for Newtown, but forgivable. All in all, I would say this is a great place to have a coffee and a sandwich (during breakfast/lunch, I don't know about other times) but skip the cooked breakfast options and tea!

I had my 30th birthday at Sole Espresso a few weeks back and it was the best party I've ever had. Jess looked after every detail, and because I had more than 20 guests I was able to reserve the whole venue exclusively for my event. We had a selection of tapas at $35 per person and everyone was more than full after that. It worked great because everyone could go to the bar to order their own drinks, including cocktails and sangria. All of my guests commented on what a great night it was. I would highly recommend Sole Espresso for your next party or event!

I've come here for my morning coffee ever since this place opened. The coffee is excellent, strong, not bitter, always fresh. The toasted banana bread is like heroin, only eat it if you're prepared to get addicted. The tapas menu is innovative and there is always something new and interesting that they are trying out.

The staff always remember your name and what you regularly order. The service is prompt and friendly (and multitalented, one chef is a dj and a barista also sings in a band). There are frequent fun ideas like drinks nights on public holidays and chilled djs on Sundays.

Nice bright space in Newtown. Very good coffee, excellent bread. I've been recommending this place since I first went for breakfast. The breakfast bruschetta is beautiful. Good sandwiches for lunch too. The bread definitely makes it. Table service would be nice but the lack of it doesn't take from the place. However, the last two times I went I gave my full order to one person who listened and then called someone else and I had to repeat it while the typed it into the system, I couldn't really understand why this happened each time, but it didn't detract from the freshness of the food and maybe I was just unlucky.

I like the big chairs near the window, I think more of the cafe should be decorated with that type of furniture. Very innovative to do DJ sessions on Sundays.

Great little cafe. Only been here for breakfasts which are delicious, love the french toast! Sandwiches on display for lunch always look good. Wish they did frappes though.

Great coffee is the start. Great meals with a range of light options as its an all day affiar. Gets a bit hot as its very open hence the lower ambience score. Good selection of wines as well, most (I think) all available by the glass.

Went for breaky today for the 1st time. I'm over Newtowns sloppy breakfasts and watery coffee (apart from Lou Jacks they are really goood as well). I'm a chef myself and work at a very famous breakfast cafe so I guess I'm a hard critic. I had eggs with avo and mieche toast was so good and my long black was strong and not bitter. Can't wait until they are busy enough to have table service, the 'order and pay at the counter' is strange concept when the food is so good.
