Overview of Sloanes Café
Sloanes Café is an institution on Oxford Street, serving shoppers and locals alike for over twenty years. The garden courtyard, located at the rear, is an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of “the strip”, and provides a haven for those wanting a lazy breakfast or lunch, or maybe even a quiet coffee with friends.
I've been going to Sloanes on and off for quite a few years and I must say, my last visit on a Sunday two weeks ago was not the fun Sloanes I am used to. The place was packed but most tables appeared to be waiting for service/meals. The place was woefully understaffed and the service was (inevitably) terrible. One waitress was even picking her teeth in front of customers.
However, the experience was slightly redeemed by my yummy Sloanes breakfast melt, which was tasty and fresh. I've always loved Sloanes and had many delicious meals there so I hope it gets itself back into shape!
We visited here for breakfast. There is a cosy little courtyard in the back with heaters so you are away from the bustle and cars on Oxford Street. I had a breakfast bruschetta and it was lovely. My friend enjoyed her breakfast as well.
Coffee was warm rather than hot which was disappointing but couldn't fault the food. Would drop in again
Generous sized portions for brekkie with good options for sides. Waitstaff are clearly very busy so naturally quite grumpy. Good for a quick, easy brunch.
Went there for a late lunch today with my sister, we ordered the 7 hr slow cooked lamb sandwich and the beef steak sandwich to share, I also ordered a omelette for my 18 month daughter, I asked if they could make a smaller one just for her and they replied "no our pans are to big". We got there at 2 and the food was served at 2:45 which I thought was too long for a cafe that was not busy at that time.
The steak sandwich was overcooked, cold and the toast it was served on was dry and rock hard, the lamb sandwich the bread was soggy it was covered in a very bland salsa then topped with shredded lamb that tasted like it had been cooked for 50 hrs and it was topped off with the smallest amount of fetta cheese crumbed. The omelette had tomatoes inside it that were not so fragrant like the menu stated they were barely ripe. My daughter spat out every bit of it. Presentation was poor and sloppy.
The food was revolting and sickening, we only ate half the dish and the omelette remain pretty much whole. The staff only offered us a $7.00 discount on the total bill. Will never ever step foot in that place again.
A very busy Saturday brush service found us quickly seated at the only remaining table in the sunny courtyard. Our food came within 15 minutes of ordering. My friends squid caesar salad was deemed fantastic, and my scrambled eggs with mint and feta velvety smooth (apart from the fact they used basil leaves instead which was a bit of a disappointment as I was looking forward to trying mint with eggs). Coffee just ok. A pleasant enough experience and we'll be back.
Appearances are deceiving for this cafe. The cramped front cafe opens out to a fresh outdoors courtyard. The breakfast menu here focuses on eggs and savouries. Their muffins are creative and worth trying if a flavour sounds appealling. I would give their coffees a miss though - not a reflection on their barista but rather their beans. Service is friendly. Pricing is typical of the area.
Wandered into Sloanes last night (Friday) as we were after a bit of quiet and it seemed the emptiest out of the restaurants in the area. We sat out in the courtyard which was great, and were looked after by a waiter named James (I think), who we quickly became best friends with.
We weren't overly keen on the octopus which appeared to be cooked in phlegm (although we confirmed with the waiter that this wasn't that case), however, the lamb kebabs that James recommended were awesome.
BYO made it a winner, and the relaxed atmosphere was great.
The service is appalling. The staff are way too and slow. The coffee is good though compared to the other offerings in the area. The seating arrangement in the front area is clumsy and uncomfortable. Main gripe though ignorant service.
Went to try out their new tapas dinner menu on a rainy Friday night recently and it was a fantastic evening! Lamb and chicken skewers were both amazing, as was the creme brulee for dessert. A tasty selection of wines and cocktails too. The waitstaff were excellent and friendly people. Definitely a great choice for a couple or for a group.
