I'm a local and have lived in Gladesville for the past year. In this time, I believe Slices has changed hands. The original owner did a fantastic job of the place. The standard of food was excellent for a shopping centre cafe and it had a bit of a buzz to it. I found the staff friendly and willing to oblige even when it was chaos on a Saturday.
The new owner has moved in and it looks like he is streamlining the business for a high profit margin. Alot of the gourmet items for sale have gone and though the menu is the same, the quality isn't there. The wraps and famed pumpkin tart used to be fantastic but are now nothing to write home about. I miss the old Slices.
I don't quite understand the popularity of this place- always over crowded with mothers, prams and loud children. You can't be in there for more than 5 minutes without getting a headache. Deli glass cabinet always seem to be smeared - not just from the outside either. The food from the Deli is quite good, though the selection is not amazing. It's also very expensive.
I have been here many times because I am a local and I keep hoping I will have a different experience, however, it is the same everytime.. SHOCKING! I have stood at the counter and not been served for over 10 minutes, I have had my order forgotten numerous times, the tables are always dirty (as is the floor etc). I have never had a meal served as I ordered. I have been served under cooked spinach pie, burnt toast, the wrong sandwich many many times.
I have witnessed the senior staff yelling at the staff like they are children (while I try to relax with a coffee). The staff are always grumpy and short and simply do not listen (apart from one nice man). I just can't believe something goes wrong with EVERY visit! I have been served my meal and my child's simple sandwich arrives 20 minutes later with the wrong filling on it. Why can't they get it right?
Have been in the mood to re-visit cafes that disappointed in the past hoping that there has been a re-birth of service, value etc. Once again dirty table that required me to ask a serving person politely to clean it, result a filthy look and my order plonked on the table. Coffee ordinary and not very hot, food edible but not that interesting. I must have mis-read the name of the cafe when I read a glowing review by a well know food reviewer?
I've been here a few times now and invariably I don't ever seem to get my food and drinks together, usually I've long finished my coffee/tea etc and then they bring (or I have to reask for) my cake etc. Its nice food but their service delivery needs to be looked at.
Good coffee. No matter how busy a cafe is they really need to monitor the appearance of their foods on display. I find it looks terribly unappealing, they would gain more sales if the young staff were trained up to tidy up as they go.
Good little place to take someone for lunch. Food is bordering on gourmet side of a sandwich bar. Service can be slow which is very hard if your trying to eat there in a 1hr lunch break.
Love the beer battered fries but will not have the pumpkin tart again, the blue vein cheese (which was not advertised as being in it) was too overpowering and it really was not very nice.
Wow!! what a fantastic place...loved being able to sit by the window overlooking Hunter's Hill putting away my Latte reading the paper. Ehat other shopping centre based cafes can you do this at? Coffee was fantastic and breakfast, I had Eggs Benedict, was among the best I've had - Ever! This place is a keeper and I will definitely be coming back.
