This must have been the worst experience I have ever had. We had to wait 20 minutes for the menu (the restaurant was not even half full!) and we had to ask for it! The main meal took over 2 hours to arrive! Some of them were cold, some were not cooked properly. The potato mash was inedible, lumpy and not cooked - my 7 year old cooks better.
The Lemon Meringue was not even baked! The lemon base ran out of the pastry and the merinue was not set,a blow torch burnt the top to make it looked cooked. One waiter had such bad BO that whenever he served we had to wait a minute for the air to clear. To boot it cost $120 a head. This was the worst experience I have ever had. I will never recommend this restaurant.
What a great little restaurant! On the 3 occasions I have been there now the food has been fantastic and the staff friendly and accommodating with my children (which immediately puts me at ease). Being right there on the water is something special and instantly transports you to a state of relaxation. The parking can be tough in the carpark and the princes highway a little frightening to cross so best to find a park on the same side of the road if possible or better still cab it for the perfect day.
I have visited here a few of times. The location is fantastic, really is quite lovely, major draw card and why we have been here a few times.
Have had both good and average food experiences here, unfortunately, the last one was average and for what they charge made it very disappointing. Parking, parking is a pain but you just deal with it, if you do need to walk for 15 minutes like one reviewer said (and I don't believe it) exercise is good for you. We have always managed to park at the restaurant, luck I guess.
Service can be really great or you can be ignored. So all in all the restaurant is a bit hit and miss.
Really loved the food here - I had the ocean trout and side cakes/asparagus while my girl friend had the prawns/scallops & rice combo. Also, the view of the yachts on the harbour was really lovely.
The service really let this place down however. They're very understaffed, even granted that the place was packed at the sunday lunch time I went to. You have to wave them down because of that. Parking is at a premium, so had to park 15 minutes away. Also a tad expensive albeit for fine dining ($36+ pp). Won't exactly be coming back with any regularity either.
I had my wedding here and it was fantastic. All of my guests commented to me later about how much they enjoyed the food and how nice a place it was. They were also extremely relaxed and helpful during the organising process on the day, I couldn't have been happier!
Went out tonight looking for a quiet place with good food and atmosphere and found one! Because it was a quiet night, the chef made us a small selection of entree's as we couldn't decide on which one to choose and we chose our own mains.
The food was exceptional with flavours and texture cooked perfectly. The chef was obviously very experienced and we later found out he is a 2 hat chef from his prior workplace that has worked all over the Europe before settling in Australia.
The service was provided by one lady who was very friendly and professional and managed to wait the whole restaurant by herself with no problems. If the rest of the staff are like her I wouldn't worry about bad service on a busy night.
Overall my partner and myself had a wonderful night as everything was pretty much perfect. Will be dining here a lot more now that we've found this secret gem.
It is hard to understand that there are in fact negative comments on this site regarding "Shipwrights" (Makes you wonder as to where the origin of them lies). I have dined at many of Sydney's finest restaurants over more years than I care to remember and this one is up there with the very best... so much so that my wife and myself continue to return and have never once been anything but impressed.
The food is absolutely delicious, the staff so helpful and friendly, the wine list is extensive with some excellent wines at prices which are reasonable. I know a rating of 10 in each category could be seen to be "over the top" but for anyone reading this just go there and find out for yourself. Shipwright's is truly one of the finest restaurants in the metropolitran area.
Well done and my advice is to ignore those negative comments which suspiciously appear every so often. Give them a try and you won't be disappointed.
My girlfriend and I have been eating at Shipwrights regularly for the last year or so, and we've yet to be disappointed by ANY aspect of the restaurant. The food itself far exceeds that of ANY suburban restaurant I've dined in. The menu is fresh and creative, and I honestly feel that the quality of the dishes rivals that of many of Sydney's most renowned two and three hat restaurants. The waitresses are very friendly and attentive, and the location is just beautiful. I could not fault this restaurant in any respect.
I can't really understand the comments of the (very few) people who have rated this restaurant as being less than exceptional. I've tasted pretty much everything on the menu, and I've never been anything less than impressed. Regarding the parking - I've never had a problem, and I usually go on a friday night. As someone else mentioned, there's ample parking in both the parking lot and on the street.
And I'd automatically disregard the opinion of anyone that uses the phrase 'ew ew ew' in a review.
This restaurant was a huge disappointment for me and my husband. Booked here for our wedding anniversary and will never be going back. The food was mediocre. We ordered the hot and cold platter - it was minimal and boring. More like a tasting plate. Asked for the octopus to be BBQ'd rather than how they were offering it but it was practically raw and inedible.
My main problem with the place was the inconsiderate attitude of staff. When I booked, having never been there before, I think I should have been told that parking is very minimal and once in through the boom gates off the Princes Highway, there is no way to turn around when the car park is full except to do a "10 point turn". Which is exactly what we had to do in the middle of our meal because we had no choice but to block someone else with our car as there was nowhere for us to park.
There was no offer of staff to move our car for us - we were told to do it ourselves. Knowing that the only way to unblock the other car was to turn around and go back out on to the highway all the way to Carss Park then turn around and come back - well needless to say, I wasn't about to let my poor husband do this while sitting there at my anniversary dinner on my own. Instead, we chose to leave, seafood "plate" unfinished, no dessert, no coffee, and we are never going back.
All that could have been avoided if we had been fore-warned - we would have caught a taxi. But that still wouldn't have changed the boring plate the call a "platter". Dismal.
TO CARLAC8: Thank you for your comments, however I don't understand your surprise at mine. If you look at the reviews the overall score is slowly coming down to an average in the mid 7's. Eventually it will be nudging the 6's and that is not the mark of a fine restaurant. The largest scores are attributed to the "ambience" of this restaurant and rightly so, as it is a beautiful spot. However, you will note that there are far too many diners rating the food as disappointing and average for it to be just sour grapes over parking problems.
Any common sense that needed to come into play should really have come from the person who took my phone booking. He was well aware that I had never been there before and yet advised us to drive right in through the boom gates - no suggestion of parking in a side street, we were told there would be plenty of parking. That said, as you know, there was not one space left for us. A decent establishment would have never insisted that we leave our meal to move our car - I have dined in fine restaurant's where the staff shuffle the cars around for the diners, as it should be.
And the food is really very mediocre.
I wouldn't be taking guests there - too embarrassing.
