Overview of Shelbourne Hotel

Built in 1902, the heritage-listed Shelbourne Hotel is a superb inner city venue that stands tall on the corner of Market & Sussex streets as a grand tribute to early federation architecture.

With stunning views over the harbour, The Shelbourne is a hybrid venue comprised of 4 bars, a courtyard, lounge and dining areas which includes the newly refurbished Linq Restaurant on the 3rd level.

Those familiar with that level pre-makeover won’t recognise the space. Textured walls, dark carpet and leather couches combine to create an immediately more comfortable room which is also available for parties and events in the evening. It’s set for lunch Monday – Friday and is fast becoming one of Sydney’s best corporate dining experiences offering outstanding pub-style food, in a fine dining atmosphere and warm service that appreciates the need to get back to the office.

Chef’s recommendations are the grain-fed eye fillet served on a potato rosti with wilted spinach and a balsamic & cabernet jus ($19.50) or the vegetable stack (served on a Moroccan pumpkin cake) for $15.50. The chocolate & hazelnut cake is a winner at $6.

A friend at work booked a Cabana in the new Market Street Garden for surprise birthday drinks on a Friday night and we all had a ball! Having a reserved lounge area was a little bit la-di-da so it was fun and nice surprise. The new garden area is packed from 5pm and the crowd is good. We've been coming in for lunch for ages, but been back to the bar more frequently through November and December. Wednesdays & Thursdays are also good for drinks after work, not overcrowded but still busy with a good vibe so its a really nice place to catch up over a bottle or 3.

We attended a function here recently held on the upper level (level 3). Great summer venue under the stars as we even watched the fireworks over Darling Hbr. Service was very friendly by all staff from behind the bar and those serving appetizers to all guests. A venue for the young as it does get progressively noisy with all the different music playing on each level.

Recently we held a farewell lunch for one of our staff. The food was excellent and the drinks were served promptly. The bar and restaurant staff were amazingly helpful. Would definitely recommend here for either a lunch or a night out! Will be returning soon!

We celebrated our sons 21st at the Shelbourne 25/7/2009. I can not imagine how anyone could have done any more to make our night so enjoyable. The staff were an absolute pleasure to deal with and the manager on the night "eddy" worked continuously with us to make sure all was ok.

We altered a few things on the night and nothing was an issue to them. The venue is excellent as is the location. The food was great and the bar prices competitive, overall 10/10. Many of our guests on the night said they intended to hold similar events there.

I recently had my 21st Birthday at the Shelbourne Hotel in the Altitude Level. We had an awesome night! I found the staff all to be really helpful and friendly and the food was great! When my party finished all my friends went down stairs and partied on in the Retro Club til 3 am. The DJs rocked! Thanks Shelly, I will be back next year!

I second pepper_bird's review. I regret ever hiring the Altitude Bar on Level 4 for a private function. From the moment we arrived, there were major issues with entry. Female guests on the checklist were purposely "frisked" for no apparent reason, clearly breaching any security code of conduct. All other guests were treated poorly by these so called "scum" of bouncers who were clearly too overwhelmed in their "Rent-a-cop" ego's.

As per the agreement with event management (who were absent on the night), all visitors on the guestlist were to receive free entry all night... this was clearly not the case. Instead all my friends were forced to pay a cover charge of $15 at the door. Once proceeding to level 4, all guests were once again stopped and hassled on level 3, as their name were not on a 2nd copy of the guestlist... why? because event management failing to print a large section of the guestlist, causing dramas all night long.

The night was absolutely ruined by these fools who parade and prance around the function room, talking into their walkie-talkies calling themselves security staff members. On one occasion, a female guest was violently grasped/assaulted by a security staff member for no reason, leaving her hand bruised for several days. To top it off, event management send us an email several days later, emphasising how disgusted they were with our behaviour. In return, we explained to them the entire story in detail. We have not heard back from them since.

The Shelbourne Hotel is a No Go Zone for any member of the public community... Please avoid the Shelbourne Hotel and save yourself of any disappointment!!

I wasted my time emailing a 'VIP List' to the management for my Hen's party. No list on the door when we arrived and they tried to charge us even though we were told to arrive before 11pm and it would be free. The doormen are chimps and it was like conversing with a gorilla to explain our situation. A more senior staff member was called and we were eventually 'granted' entry into this place.

Both levels were almost empty and it was dead so we left and headed elsewhere. A lot of trouble for nothing and I can safely say myself and my party of 6 will never return to this horrid and pathetic place. Honestly I have never experienced such a bad attitude from any front door staff anywhere. Avoid it.
