    We order a lot of delivery from these guys and it always arrives hot and the price is cheap. Standouts are the tandoori lamb cutlets, the vegetarian curry and the lamb curry with spinach. I think the place is always empty as everyone is getting the takeaway or delivery. It's been there on Pacific hwy while so many others have failed for like 2o years.

    I read the reviews here before trying this place with my entertainment book voucher. Thank you for these reviews. They were helpful.

    As described, the restaurant was fairly empty, even on a Friday night, and we received excellent service. I imagine more activity in their takeaway trade?

    All in all, a very pleasant experience including clean white table cloths. That is always a nice touch. There were huge windows at the front so no sense of being in one of those Pacific Highway boxes. It is very easy for passers-by to see what they can get.

    With the voucher we ordered plenty. For three we ordered two curries and a tandoori chicken with basmati rice. Lucky for us we didn't order the maharajah feast on the menu (about $29 per person)! I was tempted because I was famished but desisted. Other reviews say they have big serves but haven't really described how big. I will attempt to do so. Like most diners, who love Indian, I am used to cute and stylish but small brass handled bowls of curry. These make some sense because, with Indian curries, we are talking about rich food here.

    Not at Shahnai. Curries are served on bowls which I would use to serve a laksa or tom yum! In future when we go to Shahnai I will get two curries which, to our decent appetites, will be plenty for us three. Curries are about $16 from memory so two curries will be $32 excluding rice. At the cheapest half decent Indian places that serve dinner, curries are usually at least $13 at dinner time. So even minus an e-book voucher, I still foresee more good value to be had.

    We enjoyed the curries. I preferred them to the tandoori chicken. My favorite was the lamb gosht with spinach. Basmati rice was done nicely with saffron.

    The very attentive staff gave us the tandoori chicken we couldn't finish in a bag to take home to end an enjoyable evening. Thank you.

    This place has great food for next to nothing! best value around and I think it has much better service and food than some 'fancier' Indian restaurants in the heart of crows nest. I keep coming back for more!

    Hands down the best Indian food in the area. They give generous servings, the naans are chewy (which I like, but others may prefer a crispier naan), and the curries taste great! However, it's true what other reviewers have noted - the place is always empty. I come here frequently and rarely see anyone else. Plus, dinner for two takeaway is always under $40. Cheap as.

    I wasn't blown away by this place. Got takeaway and food was average. Butter chicken was bland with little taste and flavour. Naans were terrible - dried out and tasted like they has been sitting there for a long time. Will probably not try here again considering the better quality Indian you can get elsewhere in Crows Nest.

    After reading the positive reviews on this website, I found Shehnai a big disappointment. Perhaps, it was because it was a Sunday night, but it was completely devoid of atmosphere. Beside us, there were exactly two other tables of diners and not both at the same time!

    There was one table of two when we arrived and thankfully, to spare us the embarrassment of sitting alone in a big restaurant, a family of six arrived, after the other two had left. There was also a trickle of take-away customers.

    And the food just wasn’t the best. The mango chicken was smothered in a sauce that was way to sweet and drowned out any chicken taste. My beef hyderabadi (with basmati rice) was tough and chewy and the serving enough for about 4 people. Only saving grace was the gulab jamin dessert, but even the coffee that followed, was lukewarm.

    With our Ent Book voucher, the bill for two came to $40, so I guess that was a plus. It’s BYO with no corkage. Toilets were reasonable except for the black door handles that looked like they hadn’t been cleaned for 10 years. Service was polite and friendly although we had to hail our waiter to take our order, which seemed strange when the place was empty (perhaps, he isn’t used to serving customers).

    The restaurant itself has a nice look about it. It’s large and airy with high ceilings, the tables are well spaced out and neatly adorned with fresh white napery. It’s just a pity that it fails on all the other levels.

    You’ll find it on Pacific Highway right hand-side heading north, between Falcon and Hume Streets. We found parking quite easily in Alexander Street, but you could try the Nicholson Street car park.

    Can be full even on weekdays even though the food is not Indian except loaded with all hot spices and all food tastes alike.

    Okay, The reviews are fantastic for this place so why is it always empty? I have no idea. I can't tell you. This place has EXCELLENT food. I have tried most of the Indian places in Crows Nest and they are by far the best. They have excellent value, they give you free rice. The service is excellent, they are so friendly. You can pick how spicy the food will be. I cannot tell you how much i love this place. Please, please go to them because they always seem to be empty ! It's an injustice!

    Just got back from having lunch here today and enjoyed what I ate, panner pakora, veggie korma and malai kofta. My husband's fave was the prawn masala, and we're both quite full and satisfied. Overall, this BYO Indian restaurant has good food and is good value.

    Very good value for money. The curries are very good takeaway food and the delivery was prompt. Beware, they serve big portions so think twice when you order or you will have breakfast curry (not that we mind).
