This is one of my favourite Malaysian restaurants. The food is exceptionally good, which is the main reason for our return patronage. The dining area is simple yet clean but the food makes up for it.
If you want Singaporean food, this is a lousy place to visit. Service was disappointing and food is stale. This restaurant standard has dropped tremendously. Ordered a fish assam for $19.50 and they serve you cold storaged Basa fish. Way over priced and not very fresh food served. Vegetable was good but the Char Kwey Teow that my friend ordered was burnt and dry and salty. My friend end up finishing only half of the Char Kwey Teow.
When we informed the senior staff that the fish is stale, she said that all her fish is cold storaged and nothing is fresh. She did not even offer other alternative. End up paying $19.50 for the fish and did not touch the food and have to pay for the food. Not recommended at all.
Great food. If you like your food a little spicy it is best to ask them. I had the assam fish which was great. The special was large green prawns in a okra curry which was tangy with tamarind. The rotis is handmade and very good, a little on the small side but not oily at all. If you are a fan of Malaysian food, especially from Penang, this is a restaurant to try.
Whenever I go over to Sydney, I will make it a point to spend a night or two at this restaurant. Have tried food from most states in Australia, but I will always miss those food you can find in this restaurent especially the "Rendang". I must say it is the best in Australia. The service is very good as well, and nice to chat with. It reminds me of eating in the big family's dinner table filled with warmth and laughter. Will recommend this restaurant to everyone.
I've been trying different dishes at Seri Nonya for some time now and I have never ever been disappointed. Being born in Singapore, everytime I've been to Seri Nonya it feels like a welcome rush of nostalgia, both in the surroundings, and the food. The service is absolutely excellent and second to none. I cannot recommend any particular dish because they are all just absolutely wonderful!
I've been a regular at Seri Nonya for a decade, and its still a firm favorite! Top local restaurant, food has real character, and how many restaurants can you say that about these days?! Favorites of mine are The Red chicken (ayam masak merah) Rendang (dryish curry full of flavour) and Lime leaf curry are all favourites. Favorites on the entree: Kueh pie tee is lovely, satay authentic and great, curry puffs delicious and crisp.
Laksa is legendary (I like a chicken/vege combo, not on the menu but they are happy to do it) unlike a lot of the me-too laksa places these days. On the vegetable side of things, I like the tastier dishes such as belachan beans and belachan eggplant, the belachan dishes have a great richness about them. The chinese stuff on the menu is good quality and tasty too. I like the sweet and sour particularly and the fried rice. The chinese stuff also comes in handy if I'm eating with people who like milder food.
Good consistency with quality between visits, its always good. I think thats what I most enjoy about this restaurant, the authenticity, flavour and value for the quality of the food. Chef is a real perfectionist and it shows. Theres too many people opening restaurants these days who take too many shortcuts, or don't care. Its far from the case here!
I've been a loyal customer in this restaurant, eat in and take away, the taste was very goods. Try the Fish Curry you will be addicted!!. It is a sin if I did not put my two thumbs up for this restaurant.
The service was good. The ambience was pleasant. And the menu was fairly extensive. Our only qualm was the food. While 'top hats' were fairly good for Nonya, the other dishes we sampled lacked the richness of flavours we had come to expect from nonya cuisine. Certainly, we understood that often Asian restaurants have had to cater to Australian tastes but I'd have to say the food could have used a bit more stock or salt (whichever was more appropriate.)
Prices were above average, with most main dishes being around $19, which might not seem a lot but in a typical Asian meal, you'd try to have at least 2 meat dishes and a vegetable dish. In terms of Malaysian cuisine, my best experience so far has been the prawn mee at To's in North Sydney Miller St. Apparently their Assam Laksa is meant to be good but only available on Saturdays where they're only open from 11am to 3pm.
Nice little asian food restaurant, enjoyed my meal last time I dined, yet was a little frustrated with a table of loud young guys. Think they made the most of byo and took cases of beer with them, I think this is the only thing they should change.
