The food is excellent....we went on Father's Day and it was busy but not overly so. There were 4 of us and we ordered Cabbage Rolls, Pork knuckle and the Beef tenderloin. As two of the meals were entrees the waitress didn't specify to the kitchen that we wanted the meals together so they assumed that it was only a group of two rather than 4.
So after waiting 60 minutes (Not an exaggeration) we received our Cabbage Rolls, and when two of our party had finished we were still waiting for the other two meals. We had to ask and explain (with difficulty to the wait staff) that when the order was taken, they should have specified to the kitchen staff that it was a party of four and not two!!!
Anyway apart from that there were no complaints about the food and the beer from the bar was nice and not overpriced. Would go back just to try some of the other dishes and it is close to home.
I have been a regular diner at this restaurant for five years now. The quality of the food keeps me coming back for more even though it is a long journey out to Cabramatta for us. The Schwarzwald Restaurant is located inside the German, Austrian Club. Dortmunder Beer is on tap and there is a good selection of bottled German and Austrian Beers available too. Try the Erdinger Weissbier.
The meals here are huge and entrees' can often be the size of mains at other restaurants. Keep that in mind before placing your order, particularly if you are also considering ordering one of the delicious desserts on offer.
The Hungarian Goulash soup is a tasty way to start dinner, great in winter. The cabbage rolls can be ordered as either an entree' or main. They are a perennial favourite among our group. Some of the mains I would highly recommend are the Jager Schnitzel, Weiner Schnitzel, Austrian Dumplings and of course the Pork Knuckle which so many reviewers on this site have already mentioned. The Pork Knuckles really are HUGE.
The 'Specials Board' seems to have become a thing of the past now at Schwarzwald and this is disappointing. Many menu items which really made this restaurant special seem to be no longer available. We particularly miss the Veal Shanks.
You may have noticed that a number of reviewers have mentioned the service (or lack thereof). Yes, service can be slow at times. Just keep in mind that this is a small restaurant which can be quite busy. Those willing to exercise some patience will be rewarded with excellent food at quite a reasonable price. (Personally I don't mind the absence of staff constantly buzzing around the table. It can make for a more relaxing and less formal evening).
NOTE: This restaurant operates only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Its popularity is such that it is best to book.
Wow what can I say!! Food was delicious and enormous and the service was great. This restaurant has a great atmosphere feeling to it. I would recommend family and friends to come to this place. If you ever to come here you have to tried the mouth watering Pork knuckle and their apple strudle. Sensational.
Oh and of course the cheap alcoholic beverages Dortmunder Actien Brauerei (German beer). What more can you ask for!!!!!
While my first visit to this restaurant left me wanting more, my second was a shock! After raving on to friends about this gem of a place I found in the middle of nowhere, I hung my head in shame because except my hubby who always orders steak, the rest of us (4 people) were left disappointed and hungry. The platter was dry and inedible and the other dishes were so lacking!
A very important lesson learnt was, if you’re after the pork or duck dishes, as we were call first few days prior to your reservation to avoid disappointment!! Anyway we later drowned our sorrows with good Austrian beer from the pub next door and paid $65 for a bottle of STROH- we later learnt that it is $$ cheaper at Dan Murphey's!!
Being of Austrian back ground and having the pleasure of living very close to the club-its a bonus because the food here is divine!!!!!! I usually order the austrian meat dumplings or the goulash mit spatzel. The restaurant can be either very busy or quiet so its advisable to book. Mains are round the $15-$30 mark and are huge! There is also a kiosk with minimal dishes but they are usually under $12. Their serivice is at times not the very best but the food makes up for it. Try a Gosser beer and a aphel schnapps after your meal.
Had a nice experience here. The food was great value with main meal sized entrees. Food was delicious. Staff were very friendly and nice, however, service was a bit slow but overall was good.
We ate here on Sunday at lunchtime and the place was PACKED - they must have had some sort of event on. We ordered from the kiosk (and a very limited menu) and then discovered that the restaurant was opening, so we could have had more extensive choices. However, the food we did have was great (excellent beef goulash!) and I would happily return here.
The food is superb, typical of great German food. The service is awful but it fades into insignificance once you received your meals. Enormous portions of high quality food you can't beat it. Well worth the drive. Mind you take cash as they don't take credit as we found out but they were very helpful in finding an alternative way for us to pay.
