Used to be high on my list for lazy sunday afternoons. Last Saturday changed all that. I was surprised at how much it had changed. At least at a restaurant you have some sought of service included in the price of your meals (as opposed to nothing!). The meals were nice (but relatively small) and can only be described as "bistro". Except you need the side dish here. (So why the restaurant price tag one must ask?). The view is as great as ever, but not worth paying that much to come back over and over again.
I think the most painful part of the lunch was the drinks. Again very expensive. And to have to drink out of a dirty glass with every beer is definitely a kick in the teeth. It would be great if Clifton reopened again for competition. Better smarten up guys.
Being a local I've been to this stunning pub enough times not to expect too much from the service. It's slow, the staff have had nary a whiff of training, and it's a rare day that they mind their ps and qs or even smile at you. The food won't set your world on fire - it's passable but overpriced bistro fare. But the stellar location and vibe usually more than compensates - it's gorgeous inside and out, perched on the edge of a cliff with a seascape you wouldn't believe.
Went there today for lunch for my mum's birthday, however, and even the views couldn't compensate for the snarling obscenity-laden service. After an hour of waiting for 6 meals I went up to ask about how much longer they'd be. I was polite. I was snapped at by the counter girl and told that I'd only been waiting for 50 minutes "So get out of my face". On asking why she had such an attitude, she swore at me and flipped me the bird. With two fingers.
A begrudging $190 refund later, my mum's birthday spoilt, we walked out. Given how busy the kitchen was, we absolutely wouldn't have minded waiting for longer, but being sworn at is totally unacceptable and their staff don't belong in customer service.
As we went to leave, we met two other groups who had gotten even worse treatment - one lot got stone cold under-cooked food after a similar wait, and another got given garlic in their food after asking for a garlic free meal. It was lucky that they had allergy medications with them or they might have faced a trip to the emergency room. If you can't cater for food intolerances, maybe tell people when they order, not a good hour later.
This was once one of my favourite spots for Sunday arvo beers and showing visitors my home town. An event organiser, I was even thinking about hosting a function here soon, but I don't think I'd be game to take the chance. I doubt that I'll be back again.
I went here for lunch with an overseas visitor after it was recommended by a friend. My visitor was very impressed with the meal. The food was very nice. The lcoation alone is reason enough to go there, it is simply stunning. As it is a pub I certainly didn't go there expecting a la carte dining but was actually quite impressed with my meal.
We went for a Saturday lunch I asked if we could have table as I didn't know the protocol having come from the Blue Mountains. I was rudely told to sit anywhere. It is a sit where you can find a spare table venue. The same rudeness applied when I ordered our meal. There was no eftpos at all cash only with a sign saying use the ATM.
I had the Seafood for 1. The fish was not cooked and only meat in one half of the Balmain bug the other half was empty. I ordered a coffee which was cold and so full that I spilt it every where on the way back to my table. The girl that made my coffee said that she hated making coffee and would rather pull a beer hence the cold coffee which would have been nice if it was hot. Being St Patricks weekend there was a lot of people but I could not get over how rude this particular waiter was to everyone.
My husband had the ravioli which was quite nice. The venue itself has spectacular views and would be great to sit on the balcony and have a drink. The wines were reasonably priced although there wasn't much of a choice. The tables are a bit rundown and could do with a bit of TLC.
