I used go to Sands every week and I loved all of dishes. It was first time to go back since the management changed. My friends and I tried some new menu.
I was just sad. For me Hiro's dishes were equal Sands. I was totally disappointed. I really want to taste Hiro's dishes one more time. My friend told me Hiro is now working for Japanese. Restaurant in Overseas Passenger Terminal. I'll try the restaurant if I get back old Sands' food.
I'm afraid I have to echo recently updated reviews. Sands was one of our favourite, fail safe, options for dinner. My partner and I are not foodies, we simply like to enjoy good food in a welcoming environment.
Although we were welcomed by the new owners, the food, I am very saddened to say, was not. Entrees were massive and lacking in quality. And all 4 mains, ordered by the table came in a varying quality of either grossly under or over cooked.
Dear Mr New Sands Owner, please restore Sands back to it's former elegance of un-assuming excellence.
I'm sorry I didn't read the reviews that this restaurant has changed hands and there is a new kitchen staff before I went there 2 weeks ago. All I can say is the food was abysmal. We shared the Grilled Haloumi cheese and pumpkin entree. The cheese was cold, the pumpkin was undercooked and the salad not dressed. I then ordered the chicken and asparagus dish. The asparagus was inedible (overcooked) and the chicken bland. My friend had the fish package which she said was also overcooked.
The staff did try but their inexperience just added to the whole woeful night. Don't waste your money.
Update January 2009: If anyone knows where the chef who used to work here is cooking now please let me know - grapsta@yahoo.com. Real shame the new owners have kept the name to serve the same old pasta etc dishes.
Previous Review: Went last night and very happy to find the degustation 6 course meals is only $38 per person for June/July and it's really good. Plum wine starter (shot glass), nice. Great garlic bread next and a short black size cup of lobster bisque. Rich and good. Lamb entree was probably stand out while prawn entree was only let down as just tasted like a good but plain prawn.
Mains : seafood bag, delicious - beautiful quite buttery which probably makes it so nice. Wagyu beef skewer were nice too. Everything was cooked perfectly. Can't remember the dessert, I must have drunken too much by then but my girlfriend assures me dessert and coffee was also excellent, all up around $100 for 2 including 2 coffees, BYO and tip. I will be back for sure. Great service too.
We went to this restaurant based on the earlier good reviews on this website. We were thoroughly disappointed. I had the Scotch Fillet with pok choi and mushroom wine sauce. Our share entree, the dip platter, came with stale bread. The dish looked tired, the pok choi was cooked to a crisp in parts and while there were cold mushrooms on the steak, the wine sauce seemed to be non existent, the whole course bland and unappetising.
Anne had the entree Mezza platter as a main course. Besides the deep fried and burnt unidentifiable pieces of food on the platter, the rest of the items were ordinary and with little flavour. Like other recent reviewers, we would not go back to this restaurant and it does not currently warrant an 8.6 rating.
Updated review: Diners beware this place has recently changed hands and is no where near the standard of its former self which gave it the very high rating. Not sure if it has japanese, italian or greek food influences nor are the owners, it seems. Everything seems to be served up swimming in sauces while the meals are unexciting and bland, you could now refer to it as the big johns of coogee. Shame as the former place added a bit of class to coogee bay rd. Stay away until they work out who they are!
Previous Review 5th July 2008: Fantastic, fantastic! Took a punt on previous reviews and booked for 4 on Friday evening. From the moment we walked in where we were greeted at the door I have never received such attentive and genuinely friendly service for the few hours we spent there. We tried the wagyu beef, seafood in a paper bag and pasta with crab dishes, sensational.
I lapped up the attention I was given by the lovely Japanese waitresses, unfortunately, Neecy didn't share my enthusiasm while my niece, lil Scorp must have found something special in the bathroom since we lost her for half the night to make a phone call. This place is truly worth the experience and for $50 per head covering entree, main, dessert, wine and drinks is good value these days. In the words of big Arnie, “I’ll be back".

I took a friend here for her birthday last night. We ordered the garlic bread and bruschetta to start, the calamari and the prawns for entree and two pastas for dinner. We only got the garlic bread first. This was followed by the entrees, which were disappointing and their presentation in large wine glasses was quite off-putting. The bruschetta only came out after we asked again for it twice (and there was no apology). When the pasta came out, one had to be sent back because it was not as described, the other was penne when we had ordered fettuccine. The waiter conceded it was the wrong pasta after we complained but again there was no apology. We were then informed that the dish we had to send back could not be made as they had run out of penne!! In addition, we weren't given any cutlery for the pasta and the dishes from the previous courses were not cleared away
We then complained again. The waiter was very gracious after this. We received a free glass of wine, they found some penne for the second dish and we weren't charged for the second pasta. The mains (bosciaola and arabiata) were delicious. Wouldn't go back.
I wanted to take my boyfriend to a good restaurant for his birthday and after reading some of the reviews thought I couldn't go wrong with this restaurant. What a disappointment! A few minutes after we sat down the waitress informed us they had no wine menu, but we could order anything and she would bring it to us. I was confused for a moment, how can I order something if I don't know what they had? So I ordered a Pinot Noir and was very disappointed. My boyfriend ordered a beer which was served on a latte glass!
After they brought our drinks they totally forgot about us even though the other tables seemed under control. We had to wave to get their attention 20 minutes later. The menu was quite limited and a couple of the meals weren't available. We asked for plain bread and were served a toasted baguette with hard butter. The entrees of haloumi and garlic prawns were quite tasty. For mains, my boyfriend had a chicken dish which was very dry, but my seafood bag, although too rich, was quite tasty.
We heard the table next to us asking for the dessert menu to which the waitress replied they didn't have one. I asked for the bill and had to walk to the counter to pay because they were taking that long. Overall a very disappointing experience. The food wasn't that good to make up for the rest of the let downs. I wouldn't go back again.
I have wanted to try this little place for ages and I am glad we finally did. I was surprised how nice it was on the inside as I always thought it looked a little shabby. We had the homemade pate and the spaghetti with crab both of which were delicious. Our dining companions enjoyed their meals as well and with the bill around $140 for 4 people including beer it was excellent value! Service was very good as all the other reviews have noted we will be going back.
