Newtown's pubs seem to be going through a 'shmoozing'. A few places have given themselves a facelift which now attracts people with a little more cash and different sensibilities to what the suburbs reputation suggests. Seriously not a bad thing - good food, lovely surrounds etc.
The Sando, while lagging behind in decor still competes, and sometimes even beats the rest when it comes to friendliness, cheap quality beer and great live music. Make it your local and it would probably feel like a mate's lounge room rather than an establishment.
"God drinks at the Sando" sings Tim Freedman of the Whitlams, and in this case I might believe him. (I think it's the guy in the corner with dreadlocks!).
The bar food is pretty average but then again with the price you can't complain. The helpful bar stuff informed us of a "cheap" Thai place and allowed us to "sneak" the food upstairs to the second level. The cocktails were cheap lolly water undistinguishable from one another so we stayed on the beer. God's drink I hear.
The recent overhall of the Sandringham has been wonderful. It offers everything; live music, great pub food, a courtyard, pool tables, free internet and a great atmosphere. The bar staff are very friendly and they have now even started putting a few chairs and tables out the front so you can enjoy a beer outside while watching the bustle of King Street. For anyone who enjoys a friendly little pub and a great variety of live music, I reccomend the Sando.
Hadn't been there for over 2 years. It has definitely changed. Live bands 7 nights a week - Sat arvo Blues & Sun arvo with Louis Tillett. Great little venue upstairs (New York 'Speakeasy Style' but cute) with great sound and great original bands. Saw Ian Rilens & the Love Addicts and they were sensational. Keep it up.
