I used to be a regular at Samurai when it opened, as at the time I loved the food. Their Samurai DX (Deluxe) Dinner Box used to be a fantastic mix of sushi, sashimi, tempura and miso soup and udon noodles, there was vegetarian, seafood, chicken and all sorts of specialties in there.
However, we've dwindled off in the last couple of months, as the amount of food you are given for the price has definitely reduced. They have halved the size of the Udon and miso soups, reduced the number of pieces of sushi/sashimi that are provided, and also the variety of the tempura. The food is not bad, but we end up disappointed as we know what it used to be like.
As such, this restaurant has gone from a regular thing for us to the point that after the last trip in to get takeaway, we agreed that we won't go back again. We don't get the feeling of value that we used to get. Sadly, I'll be on the lookout for another Japanese restaurant in future. I feel that I could get better value elsewhere now.
This is our favourite restaurant in Sydney. My fiance used to be a bangers and mash bloke, but after a few visits, now even he suggests that we go to Samurai. We have since moved out of the area but still go back with friends when we can.
The food is so fresh and flavoursome and is excellent value for money. But if you're going, be sure to book in advance! It's always full, regardless of what night it is!
The food was delicious and fresh. The only let down was the portions of the dishes, they were really quite small for the amount of money that they charged. I reckon you can get better value for money in some other Japanese restaurants.
Went here for dinner yesterday for the second time in two months, and we're very, very keen to become regulars.
Samurai offers exceptional value for money. How many Sydney restaurants (that don't have Golden Arches outside) would allow 4 people to eat enough to fill the up for a grand total of around $80?! And the food is fantastic in a way you would never expect, especially not at that price. The Asmono, the Ebi Gyoza, the Seafood Okonomiyaki and the Salmon Tataki are all stand-outs. The Sashimi is as good as I have ever eaten. In short, everything that we ordered (and we ordered a LOT of food) was delicious.
Yes, the service is a bit patchy but it never became slow enough to cause us an issue. I think you'd put up with much worse for food this good. Can't wait to go back!
My wife and I came here recently, we couldn't believe the value for money. I had the deluxe bento, it was enough for an entire 2-3 course meal, fantastic flavours too (and no msg! I think?). The only let-down was we were seated at the back of the restaurant, if you're booking, ask for a table outside or at the front of house.
Great food and great value.
We went there based on the great reviews. Well, I don't know how this place got such good reviews. The food was ok but the waiters completely forgot about us and the place was really dingy. This cannot be a top 20 restaurant. No way!!
We're lucky enough to live close to Samurai and it's certainly become our favourite regular dining spot. It's the kind of place your friend tells you about, then you are converted and begin recruiting others. You can see I'm not alone as it's pretty hard to just rock up and get a table without booking. One of few restaurants in the area that offers real character, Samurai offers a real variety of food, from delicate entrees through to really hearty Japanese cuisine.
Yes, the service can be a little lacking at times, but it's never a real issue and the staff are always smiling and I think do a pretty good job considering how busy the place can get. The best thing is the quality of the food and the value you get for your money. We always seem to get a stack of food and it always seems to cost somewhere between 20 and $30 per head. No matter what! I understand the same people have opened up another restaurant in Surry Hills called Ninja. I wish them the best of luck and I think they deserve success over that side of the city.
The food took forever to get on my table. We thought we were ignored at this time. May be I try again. The food was ok. Service was ok (except for delivery). I think I will go again when I am not starving.
Today we were dining here for the third time during the last three months and it was fantastic like always. If you come for the first time, try to order as many different dishes as possible and share the taste of well chosen and professionally prepared fish, meat and vegetables. Probably the best dish is the Salmon Tataki, an absolute Must. A very interesting taste (spicy and icy), but something you should try as dessert is the Wasabi Icecream.
