"Dressed in white and accentuated with bamboo, the restaurant’s elegant interior buzzes with a fun atmosphere each evening. Sam Satay opened its doors in July 2008" www.bestrestaurants.com.au
Went there on a Friday night. The service and the ambience were good, staffs were friendly. But the food there was just worse than average. I am sorry to say that the food there is not authentic at all! The satay was still ok but the other dishes were very disappointing. The portion was small and not worth for its price!
We ordered ikan bakar but it didn't presented in the way as stated on menu (wrapped in banana leaf) and I think it was just simply grilled fish with some sauces. Overall, my dinner experience there was not good.
I'd been watching for this restaurant to open as I'm a big fan of Malaysian food. Visited there with my wife last weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the decor and the pricing of the banquets. The service was prompt but they must have been reading some of their reviews as the waitress kept asking if we wanted our next course now rather than assessing when is the right time.
The main issue I had with this place was too much emphasis on meat. This could even have been ok except the quality of the cuts left a lot to be desired. The venue is great if a little noisy (there was a party happening in the semi-private room). They also have a cafe/bar happening at the rear which is a great idea, especially for summer. This place will be popular but only if they can adjust the menu to modern Australian tastes and improve the quality of the meat.
My partner and I decided to try on sam satay. The ambience is perfect. The music is nice. When it comes to the food, thats the important part. I tried the steak rendang and my partner tried the chicken percik. I was happy with the food as its a new style of presenting the malaysian cuisine but with the authentic taste. Will definitely return to sam satay.
Having previously tried their a la carte menu with my partner last month, I brought 3 friends last week to try their banquet menu. The atmosphere of the restaurant is beautiful and the VIP area looks great for a special function.
The food on the banquet menu is very satisfying and the portions were more than sufficient for the 4 of us. The sauces and curries were delicious and the satay was just divine. Now that I’ve tried both menus, I would say that the banquet menu is a lot more traditional, and tasty in its simple form. At $33/head, it is great value too.
The time between the courses were a bit slow, but the food definitely makes up for it. Banquet menu is definitely the way to go, and I would recommend it for functions and parties.
Do not waste your time or money. Apart from the satay, everything we ordered was very ordinary, and overpriced. The young and eager staff tried their best, but sadly they copped a lot of negative feedback from patrons on the evening we were there. We won't be back.
We really expected more from Sam Satay. First of all, there were six of us dining. The initial table service was good, but we had to ask for glasses of water. After the menus were left with us, the staff might have assumed that we knew what might be the best way to order for the table. Hence, we ordered dishes expecting to share but arrived as individual portions. In good old authentic Malaysian style, food portions should be of a generous size for sharing...hence was very disappointing.
I highly discourage any order of the main courses as even its flavours were not close to being wholesome but bland. If you were wondering, we ordered a Grilled Spatchcock dish and a barramundi dish with Malaysian spices.
Unfortunately, we won't be return customers @ Sam Satay. It is not authentic but a try hard fusion. There may be value in their entrees and appetizers but overall, we didn’t leave the restaurant with the kick we wanted out of a Malaysian cuisine.
We waited an hour for entree and then another 40 minutes for mains. The food is great, but the service is very slow!! Our dessert that was milk based was off.
Don't think we'll be coming back, even though food is fab!
Although I had seen mixed reviews for this restaurant, I thought I’d give it a go. Off the top, the setting was beautiful and the waiter staff were very attentive to our needs, made great suggestions and always had smiles on their faces.
Since we wanted to try everything, I had the Hawker set menu and my wife ordered separate entrees and mains from the fine dining choices. The traditional dishes had great flavour and texture, and the separate dishes were just as the waiter explained: fusion of Malaysian and Western cultures. It was certainly the best of both worlds! As most of the dishes had Malaysian names, I will not embarrass myself and just write them in English.
The lamb and prawns dishes we had were cooked and tasted perfectly. But the dish that really took the cake was the chicken satay sticks. The chicken was as tender as can be and the sauce was to die for (if only they sold the sauce to the public, I would have bought a truckload!).
As for service, after reading a few bad reviews about its slow food production, coupled with the fact that it was a Saturday with the place packed, we definitely were not expecting speedy food. However, to our very pleasant surprise, the entrees came within 5 minutes and every course after that came at a very nice and steady pace.
The price was actually quite reasonable, especially considering that it is a fine dining restaurant. I’ve definitely had worse and paid more at many other fine dining establishments.
Probably the only negative point I would make is that the music was a bit all over the place. The volume went up and down and sometimes there was no music at all. But all in all it was a very satisfying experience. We will be back to try all the stuff we didn’t get to the first time around.
Disappointing. Dined in the restaurant. Menu was confusing. We asked whether 3 dishes would be sufficient for 4. We were told that 3 would be fine. The meals then arrived as individual dishes and could not be shared. Side dishes would have also been worthwhile but weren't suggested. Our intention was to share in the middle of the table (Thai style). Although staff were obliging when prompted, service was very slow, 1 hour between courses.
Price was ok, but there is much better value for money locally. BYO kept the price to an acceptable level, otherwise, it would have been pretty expensive.
