Came here about 10 years ago and have (albeit vague) memories of it being quite a fine dining. Not so this time. The hot and sour soup was watery. The jungle curry too hot to consume in comfort (and I like hot food), and the feathers on the duck skin were somewhat off-putting. The duck in the entree duck salad was over-cooked and the pork hock was sickly sweet. All in all, a very disappointing experience.
This place has slipped. Not sure who is running it now. 2 years ago the food was amazing, the service perfect and the value, well, you got what you paid for. Now, the staff a snooty, the food is 'eh', and the value, well, not so great. The beef salad used to be delicious, a properly sliced sirloin, laid out like a sirloin should, now its all sliced and thrown into everything, such a shame, why change perfection? Disappointed this time around.
We went here for our anniversary. What a mistake. The ambience is non-existent. Frankly, the canteen looked far more appealing. The food was sparse and represented poor value. A bitter disappointment.
Let me be very, very clear. Avoid Sailors Thai! At least as far as lunch is concerned. From the moment the nonchalant staff seated us, mind you on the seagull perch they call a balcony, we were promptly required to order. After a choice of two dishes ($30 each) and a side serving of rice (also over priced), the meals were carted out.
Tasteful? Appetising? I'm afraid not. Instead, our oil infused food was, as you might imagine, ridiculously poor. I've never sampled a Green Curry with so little flavour! The dish my partner ordered was effectively burnt through, a "traditional interpretation" I'm sure.
I have had much better Thai food, with far more bang for the buck. Hit up Darling Street in Balmain or one of several options in Newtown. Two words sum up the focus of Sailors Thai: revenue raising.
After much anticipation some friends and I booked at Sailors Thai on a Thursday evening. On arrival the restaurant was almost at capacity and all the wait staff were very welcoming. We sat outside which was pleasant enough but didn’t really have much of an ambience.
Our waiter was very attentive and was quite to point out some suggestions. We ordered the beef salad, massaman beef, green curry chicken, soft shell crab and the barramundi. The salad was light tasty and not overly spicy. The massaman curry was rich in flavour and full of colour with some good back ground heat where as the green curry chicken was a little soft on both accounts. The barramundi was smallish in size but was quite enjoyable although you were left wanting more.
The food here is good but without a doubt on expensive side and there are many other Thai restaurants that serve as good if not better food. It is worth checking out but there are better around.
Sailor's Thai was really nice, but they put in heaps of lime juice!! I felt it was over the top when it came to the lime juice but the rest was fantastic!! I also sing high praise to the buttered fish!!
Our friends took us here, it was their favorite restaurant. We thought it was ok, nothing so fantastic and my husband thought the chairs were so uncomfortable he couldn't wait to leave.
Has this place changed hands recently? Used to go there fairly often and last night took a friend to show off great Thai. Usual overpriced, but can live with that if the food is really special. Most was fairly good, but took the waiter's recommendation and ordered the chicken (and potato!) curry. This is fine if you like very large lumps of boiled potato and aren't too fond of chicken - anyway, main complaint was how amazingly rude the waiters and management were when we suggested (actually very nicely) that it should have more chicken and less boiled spud. We were told three times (not so nicely) that it contained 200 gms of chicken - not bad for $37. Eventually grudgingly replaced, with reminder that we were getting more than 200gm this time. Still lots of boiled spuds. How much does chicken cost anyway?
Few other details, like not pouring single glass wine at the table (so what am I driinking anyway? at $15 a glass I like to see the bottle at least). But never again. That was ugly.
Food was great, especially tasting menu. Service was very good and helpful. You do expect that for the price of food, the ambience and decor would be a little more impressive. Not really the place to go for a special occasion but still great food.
Had been here many years ago and had a great tasting experience with wonderful service. The service was ok but not overly helpful and food apart from one dish very ordinary for the price, maybe we ordered the wrong things??
