Overview of Saigon Saigon
Traditional Vietnamese cuisine, made with the finest ingredients sourced locally and prepared by experienced Vietnamese chefs. The decor is fresh and clean combining red walls with Vietnamese hats, black bamboo and genuine red Chinese lanterns. Staff are happy to recommend their favourites, although you can't go wrong at Saigon Saigon!
First time, we were there the restaurant was empty and dark. We initially even though it was closed. For such an empty place, the food took quite a while to arrive, although it was really quite yummy.
On our second time, we decided to pick up a takeaway, due to the lack of atmosphere. And what a disappointment that was. Neither was the 10% off for a takeaway honoured although it was stated on the menu but they also wanted a 2% surcharge for using a credit card, which only a few days beforehand wasn't levied, claiming it was a "new thing" credit card companies just introduced (you mean 5-6 years ago). And then the laksa was really bland, in fact the worst Laksa I've ever had and the salad was just okay, we wished we cooked at home. After that, we certainly won't be back, that's for sure!
Busy Friday night. Great decor which enticed us in - don't be fooled!
We ordered the salt and pepper squid and duck curry. Squid was very salty and oily but otherwise pretty average. Duck curry was absolutely revolting. Mostly fatty skin, not very much meat. The meat that was in there was very chewy, like it had been chucked in the pot 10 mins before.
I had to pick out the skin and it was more than half of the curry dish. The sauce was bland and tasteless. Don't order this dish! I read someone else's review about this crappy curry just now - wish I had read it earlier! Waitress was nice and noticed the skin filling up the side plate and sent the manager over. He offered us free tea and coffee (which we didn't want). Actually not to pay for the duck skin curry would've been better. Will not go back, ever.
Pretty good Vietnamese food house, bathed in a warm red Martin Scorcese-esque set design. Flavoursome menu served up by a very friendly staff, and with acoustics able to optimise nonsensical dinner conversation.
My first visit to Saigon, I wasn't blown away by the experience. It was an extremely hot Friday evening, the doors were open and we were sitting right out the front. Seemed to have no air conditioning, however, the other patrons survived is any ones else guest. The restaurant was fairly full. The service to begin with was lacking, we had to attract the attention of waitering staff and it was a relief when they finally came to take our drinks order.
We all had a traditional Vietnamese lemon drink (included freshly squeezed lemon, soda and mint). Quite refreshing. Eventually a waiter came to take the order, the vietnamese rolls were ok, didn't seem to have much in the way of flavour and they were small. We ordered three mains, 1 vegatarian, quite nice, chicken with lemon grass, flavoursome but not outstanding, finally a pork salad. I thought the salad was ok but I have tasted better elsewhere. To sum up the dining experience, the service although friendly was slow and the food was only a bit better than average.
We actually hadn't intended to go to Saigon Saigon but had walked past it and it looked lovely and cosy and welcoming, with an interesting menu. What a disappointment it was. We ordered the mixed entree to begin with, which the kitchen seemed to forget about cooking because it took about half an hour for it to come. I don't mind waiting for good food but it was mediocre and not worth the wait.
My partner ordered the duck curry for his main. On arrival it looked disgusting, the duck was fatty and anaemic looking, and the curry sauce itself was bland. He ended up sending it back and was so put off by it, that he didn't order anything else. To add insult to injury I had to wait another 15 minutes for my main course, which was again, mediocre.
Very disappointing especially considering everyone else seemed to be having nice meals! Staff were friendly but very, very slow. I certainly won't be going back to Saigon Saigon.
This is a really nicely fitted out place, with a black and red colour scheme and divided into two main rooms by a funky wooden screen. Food was fresh, tasty and had a couple of interesting additions to the standard Vietnamese menu. The claypot pork is great. Was let down by friendly but extremely absent minded and inattentive wait staff.
Saigon is my favourite restaurant in Glebe. I have been there twice this week. I love the red walls. My suggestion is that as soon as you get there, order the mixed entree which is delicious so you have something to eat with your wine and while you are waiting for the main course. Later choose your main course. I had lamb curry last time I went there which was delicious. I find the staff very friendly.
I'm a local and I like this place. Ambience is great, service is a little slow but always friendly. I find the food tasty and generous portions. Love the sweet/sour soup. Calamari is a little oily but still a good dish. Nice place, not amazing but the decor makes for a pleasant night out
Ok, been to Saigon many times before and after renovated also they changed the owner as well. My fav dishes are salt and pepper squid and pork clay pot. They are good but not as great as it used to be. Squid dish is not buttery and peppery enough. Pork is lack of flavour a bit. Moreover, it takes about 15-20 minutes between the first and second dish to arrive.
The service is ok, love the new dec oh but missing the smiley paintings (they moved them down close to the bathroom!).
