Overview of Saigon Saigon
Traditional Vietnamese cuisine, made with the finest ingredients sourced locally and prepared by experienced Vietnamese chefs. The decor is fresh and clean combining red walls with Vietnamese hats, black bamboo and genuine red Chinese lanterns. Staff are happy to recommend their favourites, although you can't go wrong at Saigon Saigon!
My friend and I had dinner here last night - 25/08/2010. The place is lovely, the waiters are very nice and friendly, the food not so good. We had the mixed entree plate, waste of money and calories. 2 measly satay sticks, 2 squashed and damp fried money bags, 2 x 1 small prawn stretched out on a skewer to maximise the size of it and bite too and one measly rice paper roll cut in half, just one and an abundance of greens decorating the plate, worth $18 -no way.
The vegetarian tofu curry, had no flavour and was runny. Rice was overcooked but plenty of that. To be honest the people next to us had a lovely looking papaya salad and chicken dish that looked good but I did not ask how they were. This place needs some flavour in their meals and an open generous hand when serving food to people.
Would I go back, intoxicated and desperate, maybe, other than that no, keep walking guys, don't stop here, great on the eye but no so on the palate, lots of other places along the stretch.
I am a very fussy eater and I have been frequenting this restaurant for the past 5 to 6 years and this is definitely one of my favourite places.
The beef luc lac is full of flavour and the beef is always tender. The tomato rice there actually tastes like tomato rice and not just plain rice that looks red. Salt and pepper prawns are fresh and they are always generous with the servings! Another favourite is the lemongrass chicken. The mint and lemon drink is a must have!
I love the newly renovated decor, the red lanterns and pink walls creates a delightful ambience. Quality of service is rather inconsistent and is probably the only area that needs improvement. I always look forward to my next meal at Saigon Saigon and I will definitely be back again soon!
Food was quite good. The Salad was really beautiful and fresh but the curry was disappointing. However, the decor and atmosphere is something special.
We were there on a Saturday night and the service was quite slow and not really up to scratch when you are paying that little bit extra. Our wine sat on the table without a bucket for best part of 10 minutes and we had no cutlery when our meals arrived! Perhaps, they just had an off night. I'm willing to give them another go!
First time beginning here and it will be the last time. Service was great but the food, it was not what I suspected, ordered the duck curry, the duck full of fat/skin the curry got no taste. Most of all my partner and I ordered just 3 dishes and we got no room on the table. Most of all the dish are serviced on pasta plates can't even have a glass of water on the table.
The place is beautifully decorated and has great street appeal. The menu wasn't exactly what we were looking for but had enough of the basics to be worth a go and a particular favourite on the dessert menu.
Service was good and our lemon soda drinks (house specialities) were served quickly and were nice, but, unfortunately, they were also the highlight of the evening. The Summer rolls were ok but very small and strangely cut into half. Only two to a serve so not value for money. These were served with a bbq sauce only, not the nice fresh tangy sweet chilli that they needed to bring them alive.
The lemongrass pork arrived in a small claypot but had a very odd smell to it. It was literally nothing more then 200 gms of thinly sliced pork in a lightly caramel coloured stock , not even the faintest hint of lemongrass or any other vegetable matter. The stock of itself was ok on the rice, but the taste of the pork was not right. The duck salad consisted of, in order of greatest to lowest quantity, spanish onion, carrot, lotus roots, two or three pieces of lettuce, and 4-5 small slices of *steamed* duck breast.
The only point for having duck in a salad is for the aromatic lovely taste of the duck, which is completely and utterly lost when steamed! We were very disappointed and yet still hungry after this and so we sat for a few minutes debating whether we were prepared to take the risk and give the place another go by trying what we had thought were a couple of interesting choices on the dessert menu.
After all, maybe we had just made bad choices with our other three dishes. Giving the kitchen the benefit of the doubt, we had just decided to ask for the dessert menu when we were suddenly presented with a very ornately carved box, with the bill in it. Such a shame as we had had high hopes for this place, but for our money, we'll definitely be going somewhere else in Pyrmont next time!
First time, we were there the restaurant was empty and dark. We initially even though it was closed. For such an empty place, the food took quite a while to arrive, although it was really quite yummy.
On our second time, we decided to pick up a takeaway, due to the lack of atmosphere. And what a disappointment that was. Neither was the 10% off for a takeaway honoured although it was stated on the menu but they also wanted a 2% surcharge for using a credit card, which only a few days beforehand wasn't levied, claiming it was a "new thing" credit card companies just introduced (you mean 5-6 years ago). And then the laksa was really bland, in fact the worst Laksa I've ever had and the salad was just okay, we wished we cooked at home. After that, we certainly won't be back, that's for sure!
Busy Friday night. Great decor which enticed us in - don't be fooled!
We ordered the salt and pepper squid and duck curry. Squid was very salty and oily but otherwise pretty average. Duck curry was absolutely revolting. Mostly fatty skin, not very much meat. The meat that was in there was very chewy, like it had been chucked in the pot 10 mins before.
I had to pick out the skin and it was more than half of the curry dish. The sauce was bland and tasteless. Don't order this dish! I read someone else's review about this crappy curry just now - wish I had read it earlier! Waitress was nice and noticed the skin filling up the side plate and sent the manager over. He offered us free tea and coffee (which we didn't want). Actually not to pay for the duck skin curry would've been better. Will not go back, ever.
