I have been to this place at least five times. Service and ambience are good. But, food is often inconsistent. Often, meats are not cooked to perfection, ie, either overcooked or undercooked. They often have some weird menu, which is from nowhere in the world. Wine list is good. Overall, not a bad place in Newtown but not impressive either in terms of food quality.

My brother and I and our partners took our parents here for a birthday dinner, we were so pleased and couldn't fault the food or service. More upmarket than most of the other eating places on King st, great for having conversation and really enjoying good food. Very helpful with our special requirements of bringing a 6 month old with us.

Food is just lovely, great selection of grazing plates to share, something for everyone and don't be afraid to try something you usually wouldn't - it's all delicious. Make sure you try the cocktails too!

Having never been to Rubyos, we were looking for a nice place for brunch and noticed they had a $25 brunch special which included a glass of sparkling and 4 courses (bruschetta, eggs benedict, ricotta pancakes and fruit salad).

We went in a group of 4 at 11am and found Rubyos half full, the restaurant is clean, crisp and fresh looking with well presented attentive staff.

Our order was taken promptly and our sparkling arrived quickly along with our first course. The remaining courses came out around 15 minutes after each other which was actually perfect timing so we could slowly graze and enjoy some conversation between serves.

Each course was well presented and the food was fresh, tasty and well cooked. We also enjoyed a good strong coffee after the meal. We really enjoyed our brunch experience at Rubyos and all left feeling well satisfied and will definitely return.

A fantastic restaurant for a romantic/special dinner. Food is delicious and filling. The fact that its BYO too is brilliant.

Great service. We had the lazy weekend brunch special and it was worth the value. I would definitely come back again to try out other breakdast menu.

Had 4 course brunch at Rubyos yesterday and it was amazing! Each course was a perfect portion and completely delicious. The value for money ($25 for 4 courses plus a breakfast cocktail) was outstanding! The staff were all friendly, helpful and almost too efficient (clearing a serving plate before I'd scraped every last inch of tasty hollandaise sauce from it!). As a new local to 'Newtown' I will be going back here... a lot!

My partner and I sat for Rubyos’ “Date Night” degustation. To preface this review with a caveat: we were not expecting all the perks of fine dining, as this is a reasonably priced menu. However, for that reasonable price ($50 a head, not including drinks) the evening was an absolute disappointment. Allow me to explain why this was the case.

The seven courses came out haphazardly, with some being delivered together, and others with significant (even excessive) pauses between them. The courses themselves ranged, in taste, from lackluster to offensive—the salad (lettuce and pancetta) had no flavor but for bitterness; the kangaroo (coated in something black and mustardy) was overcooked and fatty; the crab was miserably dry and coated with unpleasant-tasting curry powder; and the desert was, sadly, inedible: indeed, no one should be expected to pay for dry supermarket brownie, sided by bleach flavored blackberry ice-cream and bleach-flavored pana cotta (with extra ammonia, because you’re worth it). The course sizes aren’t ideal, but that would be forgivable if they were more edible or even, dare I say it, appetizing. Our meal was neither edible nor appetizing.

The location is stunning and convenient—to be sure the restaurant’s large, glass windows allow for customers to take in some pleasant scenery—and the wait-staff are friendly, though not quite up to setting down plates without spilling their contents onto the table. I will not return to Rubyos and I would not recommend it to friends—alas, after this evening’s experience, I would actively persuade potential customers to try their time elsewhere.
