We and others used to love this place. Fair enough to put your prices up by a couple of bucks BUT don't insult us by changing the portions of your dishes! A great steak with chips, grilled tomato and mushroom has gone up by a few bucks and at the same time they have removed the mushroom and tomato from the plate! shame, the regulars have noticed and won't be back in a hurry!
Very badly organised, waiting in a queue like a rubbish canteen. I ordered the mussells which were terrible and sent them back. My friend had some sort of fish, also terrible, and the other person at our table had the worst schnitzel with terrible chips. Actually, I ended up just having some of the chips.
We were originally in the side room with the glass roof but the noise was deafening and shifted to a bench seat near the service counter. The air-con wasn't working and that area soon became hot and stuffy. Don't know who does the cooking but they should be ashamed. Would never go back and has put me off pub food.
I have been here many times for a casual dinner. I don't mind having to order at the counter. Although going to the bar for drinks is a bit annoying, but I think that is because it is more about being unusual than a deal breaker. It just doesn't make much sense. Unless the pub wants their patrons to experience "the bar"'. I always order the porterhouse steak with bernaise sauce and the salad. I like bernaise sauce because its old fashioned, rich and bad for my blood pressure.
The salads are always fresh and a great compliment. I have always found the steak to be well portioned and tender. The only criticism I could have is sometimes in winter, the dining room can be a bit cold. Sure you could get the same quality steak and salad for cheaper elsewhere but if you are local and want a good steak dinner, quickly in a nice casual local haunt then this spot is perfect for good, honest food.
Went with family on Sunday 6th April 2008 - had steak - dreadful - meat so tough, actually the worst steak I have ever had - mushroom and overcooked tomato with it and loads of overcooked fries which you could not eat either because they were so hard.
Mum's risotto tasted salty and not much of it to call it a meal. My sister's pie was great. Would I go again - never, don't go, overpriced and not quality food at all. Corners cut at every opportunity from the look of things. Let the tourists eat here.
A group of us had lunch for a friend's going away party. Agree with previous comments about the price being steep enough to more than warrant not having to run around organising your own food and drink orders.
The salt & pepper squid was fabulous, tender, melt in the mouth.... Everyone at the table who had steaks were bitterly dissappointed. And the airconditioner wasn't working (on one of Sydney's hottest January days on record). We'll probably go back once more as its a local, but hopefully it will be uniformally better next time.
It’s very pricey for a pub. Didn't like having to order at the bar counter and having to then go to the bar to get drinks. At these prices get a waiter or two in! Having said that the salt and pepper squid was fabulous!
We had lunch here recently for a friend's birthday. The food was great.... when we finally got it. There seemed to be a lot of confusion behind the scenes and we have the feeling that the orders must have gone awry in the kitchen. Those of us who ordered last got our meals first and those who ordered first, such as the birthday girl, didn't get her steak sandwich for about 2 hours!! Yes it was a rainy day, and yes there were a lot of people dining, but it was a Sunday and the staff just didn't seem to be able to manage the volume of orders. I'd go back here, but maybe midweek next time!
The food is reasonable, but sometimes it fails. I eat here quite regularly. The simplest dishes work the best. But big parties are handled well. I like the informality and the decent serves.
My partner and I go the Royal Oak every Wednesday night for the excellent pub quiz run by Brendan. We often order a rump steak and chips for $16.00 which is always cooked beautifully and is melt in the mouth tasty. Side salads are $5.00 and there is a wide selection from which you can fill your plate.
Cutlery is given to you when you place your order at the bar along with a table number so that the waiter can find you when he/she brings your food out to you. There is more expensive fare on the menu like fantastic salmon and kipfler potatoes for around $26 which is about average price for most things on the menu and there's always specials which change regularly.
I love going to Royal Oak, the staff behind the bar are always friendly. We won a bottle of wine at the quiz one night and one of the bar staff came out and opened the bottle for us and kept returning to top up our glasses. This is in the bar not the restaurant side of the business so we were really impressed with that level of service. Always happy to take friends there who never say a bad word about the place.
