Overview
Roxannes has a lot to live up to….considering its namesake was The Roxanne, the wife of one of the greatest emperors of the ancient world, Alexander the Great. Roxannes’ does impress and more with its innovative and diverse menu. It fuses all the best elements of Australian and Asian foods. Fresh, local produce given a fabulous kick with asian spices and herbs.
Restaurant owner & host, Raj Kimi welcomes you with warm smiles and enthusiasm. The staff are attentive and helpful without being overbearing which helps you to relax and enjoy your meal. The interior is reminiscent of a Turkish boudouir – Deep red velvet and black drapes, chocolate brown tables seductively lit with tealights.
The soft shell crab with mango and paw paw salsa entrée really enlivens the tastebuds with its fresh and spicy flavours. The mixed entree of seafood dumplings, tender chicken skewers and salt & pepper prawns was an equally delicious start to the evening. Roxannes is such a refreshing experience for the tastebuds. The Thai style lamb shanks melted in your mouth and were served with the most divine curry-style sauce with eggplant, polenta and basil. The roasted pork belly and Japanese scallop combined with the deep fresh greens of a leafy coriander salad really hit the spot. For dessert we relished over crispy apple dumplings with caramelised figs and saffron syrup, and a rich sticky date pudding. All this served with a beautiful Turkish apple tea.
Roxannes has all the sass and grandeur fit for an emperor, tucked into a neat little restaurant on Glebe’s bustling main street. Alexander the Great would be proud.
After recommendations from a work colleague, I convinced my friends that we must try this place out for dinner on Friday. We were dining early and so service was spot on with our waitress was friendly and accommodating.
We shared the salt n pepper crab which was tasty but the chicken skewers were nothing special. As for mains we ordered the lamb shank special (tender meat!) the lamb cutlets (yum but not enough!) and the mixed bbq plate (okay, I agree with the previous reviewer about the stale bread and dips).
Overall, we all had a great time. Its BYO with $3 corkage per person and we managed to sit there for 3.5 hours talking, drinking and eating! As they were in the entertainment book it was good value for money. Would go back even without the card. WIll be back.
Still one of the best in Glebe. The chilli/salt cattlefish was tender and light. Fish of the day was cooked to perfection. Staff were very professional and warm. Top recommendation
Enjoyed the experience. Had the BBQ plate which was OK. The accompanying side of dips and stale bread were a non event really. The service was prompt and courteous which shows up establishments who like to flatter themselves that they are better than they really are.
Certainly will return. The menu has a variety of options that are interesting. The place was packed and people were constantly being turned away. Obviously a very popular local spot.
A small restaurant, but very clean, shiny, and beautiful atmosphere. (The toilets are a nice surprise as well!). Prices are a bit higher than what I'm usually used to (<$20), but main portions are perfect for a single person. The soft shell crab with linguini/tomato-based sauce that I ordered was delightful. Garlic bread was a bit hard, but the spices used were interesting. Definitely good for a special night out.
Mm.... No, that's not me thinking or being indecisive of having something to say, I'm just recalling the huge flavor that was literally packed in my crab omelette which I had as my main friday night last week at this incredible little gem on Glebe Point Rd.
I visited Roxanne on two occasions. The first time I was there, I went with a friend and ordered an Italian seafood dish and my friend ordered a Japanese chicken dish (was it the teriyaki chicken or katsu I can't quite recall). Mine was quite good while his was (according to him and well, the way he literally devoured it) absolutely amazing!
The second time I went there was last weekend with my mother (to make up for the Mother's Day's dinner that I could not make the previous week 'Bad Boy!') and I ordered the Crab Omlette while she went for the Grilled Baramundi (I think!) both of which were special on the night and Man was it an explosion of flavours and texture! My tastebuds are still numb from the experience, I tell you and it's not even an overstatement.
Let me make something real clear here: the ambience, setting, decor, service and all that less-important stuff are undoubtedly good BUT... they just pale in comparison to the food that is offered here. The chef's years of experience in managing a widely diverse range of cafe's and ethnically-focused restaurants (straight from the maestro's mouth) really comes through in the fascinatingly interesting flavors and ingredients found in all the dishes he designed.
When I go to eat out, I focus on the food because that's what I come out to do in the first place, to eat! And the most important aspect of the food in my opinion is the flavor. Lacking everything else, the flavor will still save the dish. And if you are one bit like me, boy, are you in for a treat. Go for specials too, they're not called that for no reasons. Looking forward to return very very soon. Yum!
Food was fantastic and creative, great portion sizes and unbelievably good value for money. My husband had the beef fillet and said it was one of the best he's ever had (and he never says that given he's usually so picky!).
We were with a group of 6 and our orders were taken promptly, food served without extended waiting time and even the water jug on our table was constantly replenished. The staff were attentive without being in our face. We will definitely be back, what a find!
I went here for lunch yesterday, with a girlfriend and we were both disappointed with the food and service we got. As soon as we walked into the door, we were pushed into making a quick decision, and the staff don't know what they actually sell there.
My friend asked what was inside one of the burgers, the waitress had no idea what the ingredient was. Then when my friend got her food, her bread was too soggy and then realised that she got Turkish bread instead of focaccia. When we were ordering, my friend made sure that she was going to get focaccia and it was written on the bill focaccia bread.
So when we made a complaint to the waitress, she started going on about the ingrediants, but when asked if she knew what focaccia was, she had no idea!!! Then another man came out who also had no idea what focaccia was, but they have typed out on their menus that they serve focaccia bread.
After we made our complaint, the staff members went to the back and we can hear them yelling at each other and because we were the last ppl in the cafe, they started to close up the store while we were still sitting there which we both found rather rude..
As for my food, I ordered the salt pepper squid/prawn which I found too dry and the salad had too much coriander, on the menu it didnt' say anything about coriander being in the salad.
Breakfast was fairly nice here although probably nothing overly special. Beans were beautiful, mushrooms tasted a bit odd, juice was lovely but overpriced for size. Probably would return - for dinner, perhaps.
