We went with another couple last night and the food was outstanding. We have dined at many restaurants in Manly and this one stands out as the best. The entrees are delicious and the mains, between us we had chicken, lamb, tuna and salmon. The chef at Rouge restaurant is excellent. The staff are friendly and well trained. We all had a very enjoyable evening, (celebrating a birthday) and we will highly recommend Rouge for casual eating as well as a restaurant to celebrate special occasions. Bravo!
The big breakfast here is the worst I have had in Manly. Scrambled eggs that are overbeaten and separated with water on the plate. Wet toast, Big old tough field mushroom, off tasting sausage and oil everywhere. I've heard the same from other people (unfortunately too late). Maybe it's better in the evening but I wasn't happy. Coffee was great.
In relation to the gentleman who was turned away for coffees, you are a big baby. If you want coffee go to a coffee shop and stop wasting everybody's time!
In relation to the gentleman who was turned away for coffees, in the middle of a busy service having coffee tables simply is not possible, this is a policy of lots of places in the evening. It takes up a table for people who may actually want to come and have a meal. I totally understand why the less senior members of staff turned you away.
Will never go back here and will never recommend it to friends or family after being turned away for a coffee. The place wasn't full and because we were not ordering food and just wanted to sit down and have a quick coffee, we were turned away and had to leave. This is appalling. I am a local and am always looking for places to take our many visitors for meals, drinks etc, but this place is now off the list. The senior staff couldn't even come over and explain this to us, he got one of his young waitresses to come and tell us, we couldn't have just a coffee! Disgraceful.
We went there with another couple and sat outside. The food was delicious - the boys had the pork belly and the girls had the fish - both cooked to perfection. We shared dessert and nothing was left. BYO and highly recommended.
A very pleasant surprise, a regular north steyne visitor, but normally frequenting the popular Zinc/Bluewater eateries, we decided to try Rouge for a change. Very good! Would recommend and definitely re-visit. Service was attentive and personal, with the owner recognising our 'special' bottle of wine, and offering to decant it for us. The food was great, good portion sizes, we left feeling pleasantly full without having over done it.
Our only gripe would be the relatively steep $8 per bottle corkage charge, for no apparent reason. That said, would definitely go again!
A little gem on the beach at Manly sandwiched amongst a few higher flyers (Whitewater and The Shore Club?), the perennial meat fest, Rouge steps ahead with surprising restaurant quality at a much nicer price point than a 20 buck burger and chips. Try snagging a mid teen entree along this stretch and you'll end up with four fish cocktails and a seafood stick back on the Corso. Must say my favourite is the grilled prawns with goats cheese, prosciutto, avocado and orange oil...light and very tasty and only 14 clams. Last night the wife had the prawn entrée whilst I tucked into a Portuguese baby octopus salad with a nice brushcetta. Field mushroom with gorgonzola another fav.
Two pasta dishes...including a prawn spaghetti which gets rave reviews from like minded acquaintances.
Mains range from $24-30 and vary in quality...the lamb rump has been average before so leave it in the kitchen, last nights Tuna special (kipfler tatties, artichoke, roasted tomato, goats cheese) was a delight. The wife's venison special (herb gnocchi, peas, and asparagus) was a pearler also. Other mainstays such as pork belly and crisp barra (when fresh...has been 'frozen' mushy before) are sound dishes executed well,
Service is above average for a stretch of joints that can so often offend...not sure why some choose hospitality when it's so obviously a chore and not really agreeable to them?
Half decent wine list...all by the glass ($6-8 per)...great for the casual dining feel.
Only gripe (well not really...being a creature of habit I don't care too much for continuous change and evolution) is the somewhat tired menu. Time to freshen it up a little, lose the average lamb rump, changeup the pork, specials need to change more frequently and find a new home for some of the goats cheese on the menu (a bit repetitive),
Confident 8 from 10 for casual and consistent dining,
