We had dinner here last night after purchasing a voucher on Cudo. I read these blogs beforehand and was a bit worried after reading so many negative blogs. Anyhow I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised when we received our meals. My husband had calamari to start and I had the garlic prawns and we both had steaks for mains. The steaks were cooked great. The sauces were so tasty! We also added dessert of creme brulee which was great.
The wine included in the deal was really nice. The only negative feedback I would give would be the lack of service. We were not asked if we wanted dessert (we had to ask ourselves). Also our card and bill was given to the wrong table but was quickly rectified. The restaurant was not busy. Our food came out quickly but not too quickly. There was a guy singing which gave it a nice ambience. Good value for money.

Absolutely terrible!
Just finished our mother's day lunch here, and I have to say that the service was possibly the worst service I have ever experienced. We were not offered a wine list, nor any water for the table as other tables had. The wait staff were all quite rude, none asked us how our meals were or if we were enjoying everything. We were at the restaurant for over 2 hours for only 2 courses, waiting at least an hour for our mains, yet no apology for the extremely lengthy wait was offered.
When our mains were served, the waiter rudely said 'here' to my sister when handing her plate, which he did not even place on the table. The table next to us had also been waiting for Ages (actually longer than we had been waiting) and asked how long their food would be, and we're rudely told that it was coming now. They had to wait another 10 minutes though before being served.
Yes it was mothers day, but to be honest the restaurant was not That busy, and to see the senior staff hang around a large table of about 12 or so next to us like a bad smell, whilst we were totally ignored was just salt rubbed into the wound. We were not even thanked for coming when we left.
Unfortunately, the food was not even worth the wait. My whitebait for entree were soggy and basically inedible, and my mothers garlic prawns were lukewarm. The mains were also average at best, infact most pubs these days would serve nicer meals than here. My sister's steak was totally overcooked (about a third of it too tough to eat), my other sister's schnitzel was dry and awful, the vegies accompanying the meals were overcooked and cut into these massive chunks, and my salmon was also very average and bland, and came with only 2 asparagus spears (which were overcooked). Fortunately our mother's main was at least ok.
All in all an extremely disappointing experience. We used to love going to the lane cove river steakhouse for dinner as a family, but the new management have ruined it for us as a venue, and we will not be returning.
A crying shame as the restaurant is in such a picturesque spot.

We visited the cafe because we purchased a voucher from them on one of the group buy websites.
On arrival, a waitress took us into the courtyard and told us she would be right back to set up a table for us. She left and forgot about us. After we managed to find a table ourselves, a waiter gave us the menu and said he would be back to take our orders. Again, we were forgotten. It took the staff about 30 minutes to finally pay attention to us. Even though we had been waiving to them to get their attention, they kept telling us they were busy and would be 'right back'.
When it was time to pay for the meals, none of them staff remembered which one of them took the voucher from us. It took another 30 minutes or so for them to finish the 'investigation' and find out which deal we were entitled to.
The food was ok. The serving was generous.
But during the whole stay, we felt ignored. I wouldn't call the experience pleasant. Just wonder if the cafe can't offer good service to impress customers, why they bothered attracting people with vouchers. It will just damage its image.

My partner and I went to this restaurant for the first time on valentines day. The only thing I could fault them on was that service was a little slow. But being an extremely busy night for them it wasn't unexpected. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was quick and delicious (the mushroom sauce was fantastic). We will definitely be returning.

Friendly service and peaceful location. However, this was not enough to compensate for the completely tasteless mango smoothie. What a shame that a cafe in such a great position cannot serve simple beverages.

Based on what a majority of my family/friends say about this place over the years, their feedback was not too good. We are all locals too. I went here for the first time ever using those deal voucher. I was not overly excited based on what I've been told.
The best part about the restaurant was the convenient location and the view of Lane Cove River. The atmosphere was also nice as they have an indoor or outdoor setting.
Besides that, there is nothing much going for it. A majority of the food was Bland. It looks like they also boil the meat, leaving it a flavourless with no colour. Really nothing much to say. It's pretty much rubbish, and we tried the entree, main and dessert. Only one of the dishes out of the lot was satisfactory.
The service was friendly, but there are a few things that left us feeling very unimpressed. For example, the waiter only offered cracked pepper to some of the tables, not us. Is there a good reason for this? Maybe it's because we used a discount voucher, so it does not qualify us for cracked pepper? And it would have been nice to have been offered some water on the table when you are drinking wine.
It's a real shame, because this place could have a lot of potential due to it's remote location, with no competition nearby.
Response from Management:
Once again I’m very disappointed to hear of overly exaggerated feedback. Yes the place did have a not so good reputation at some stage and it’s not necessary to keep bringing the history into your review. The majority of our food is not bland as you state, and you wouldn’t know as the vouchers have a limited choice of meals. It’s a basic try menu to sample the venue and our food. Our menu is one of the largest I have seen in restaurants for a very long time you’ve had one entree and one main that wasn’t to your liking and you are judging my whole menu. We have Bouillabaisse with authentic Italian flavours, risottos the best In Sydney if I might add, fish, burgers all our ingredients are chosen to complement each main dish.

As for your boiled steak, I have never heard anything so exaggerated and absurd in my life, if you asked for a BLUE steak, yes it will not have any colour as it only sits on the grill for 2 minutes on each side, and yes, our steak is bland if you choose not to have it accompanied by sauce as we do not pre salt our steak for the reason that the salt releases the juice and dries out the steak. Salt, pepper, mustard and a big variety of home cooked sauces are available to you if you ask to enhance the steaks flavour.

As for the wait staff service, they're human and sometimes do forget cracked pepper and water, but I’m 100% sure if you did ask, you would never be refused. If you walk into a restaurant thinking you will be disappointed, you probably will be, regardless of how good the service or food is.

We went for a birthday. We dined early as we had 2 children under 3 with 8 Adults. There was a large party inside a wedding. We ordered drinks and went for a second round only to be told the beer we had ordered on the first round had run out.
The mains didn't come out together 2 came out not cooked correctly and were sent back the correct meals arrived 30 minutes later as they delivered the last adult meal we asked where the childrens meals where they arrived 10 minutes later and were left. In my opinion the childrens meals should have come out first (parents feed children then eat themselves not the other way around).
Overall the service was polite but not good. We received a discount on the overall bill for the inconvenience. We may go back but will ask if they have a big group before we book.

Apart from one suspect tasting raw oyster we all agreed the food was pretty good. I had a dozen of the aforementioned raw oysters ($26) and flathead with salad and chips main ($20). My mate had scotch fillet ($29) and my wife had the fried calamari entrée ($11), a fillet mignon ($34) and a 'Chocolocco' sundae dessert ($8.50) and clearly brought a healthy appetite that night!
This place being located beside a river in a national park but also smack bang in the middle of dowdy lower north shore suburbia miles for any excitingly located restaurants is the reason this venue has endured albeit with a succession of different owners down the years. The latest custodians of this address give every appearance of wanting to make it a goer and I think they deserve an 'A' for effort.
Corkage is reasonable at $2 per head flat regardless of the number of bottles you bring and they have a full range of wines, beers, cocktails and spirits on tap too, all at reasonable prices. The decor, service, food and drink remind me of a typical bistro in 4 or 5 star hotels.
P.S. I didn't mention the oyster to the waitress as it would have spoiled the mood and fortunately there were no ill effects.

This is an update to the rather better review I gave in Sept last year.
This place has really gone down hill! My wife and I have been here, perhaps, 50 times over 30 or more years under several different managements, I am sorry to say I may never go again Ever!
We had purchased a meal deal online (seafood platter for two valued at $120) for $59, I was quite excited as I figured we would be getting a fabulous feast ($120 platter should be very nice). Not so, the oysters were nice and so were the nine grilled prawns but the rest of it was just rubbish. We even had been given crackers and pokers to eat the crab/lobster with, the only problem was that there wasn't any!
Fish was almost non existent (one small piece the size of a potato chip, the calamari was tough and oily, I think there were two scallops in there but they didn't taste like a scallop should. Then there was a pile of shriveled up, marinated, cold, hard octopus that was unedible.
There was a pile of lettuce and a few pieces of tomato and red onion as well as a bowl of chips and that was it. This place needs to do some serious rethinking about its product. It has a wonderful position and a long legacy but it is failing terribly and I would not recommend anyone to go here.
My response to the managements response is as follows:
We got no fresh prawns just some grilled ones. What we got was as I described above!
At best it was a $59 platter although I have to say (in response to your silly comment about bait) that if I did use the platter as bait to catch a fish I doubt I would catch anything!

September 2010...
I would agree with the last review. It is quite noisy with the hard floors and while the food was quite nice it was nothing out of the ordinary. During summer there is a very nice outdoor area which could be nice for lunch, we will give that a go later in the year. I think the prices have gone up since it reopened under the new name and new management but I don't see anything that would make it worth the extra money.
Response from Management:
Im really sorry to hear of your disappointment, I realise you were not advised as to what would be included in the seafood platter and that's part to blame as the photo provided by the marketing company did not belong to Riverside.
Our Seafood platter includes- 1 doz fresh Sydney Rock Oysters $26, Seafood Basket $19( scallops row off, prawn cutlets, fish cocktails, calamari), 6 calamari rings $11, 6 pc BBQ Octopus $16, 2 Prawn Skewers $16, 8 Fresh Tiger Prawns $17, Small Salad $5, Small Chips $5, tartare sauce, cocktail sauce lemon wedges, 2 glasses of wine $12, Total Value $127.
You paid $59. I think it would be fair to say you probably cant get bait to go fishing for $59 these days.
Once again I'm sorry we didn't meet your expectations,
we sold 170 seafood platers in that promotion, feed back has been fantastic, we have been asked to do the promotion again even though we do not specialise in seafood.
We do not market our selves as fine dinning, we are casual family cafe restaurant, our prices are realistic and affordable and our staff very friendly and accommodating.

We used our deal voucher so we had a great discount already, but generally it was a great experience, nice location and i would highly recommend having breakfast here. Coffee was great and both mine and my partners meals were nice.
