Degustation for $49 is a very good value by chef Kevin Seo. Also had a additional courses, blue cheese ice cream course with pretzel was our favorite of the night.

All round, one of the nicest Jap restaurants around. If you're looking for intimate, classy, sophisticated but not overally pretentious, don't look far!
Rise is seriously best kept secret. My parents have been to Tetsuya on a number of occasions and they said that Rise is on par, if not better!
Check it out, but keep it ssshhhh.

Came here on a Saturday night with a group on 10 for a birthday dinner. First up, BYO at $12 per head is a bit steep, but after that the prices are extremely reasonable.
As a table we opted for the degustation, which at $49 for 5 courses is excellent value. There was also the option to bolt on 2 courses (oysters to start and a second savoury dessert). The oysters came out nicely flavoured and fresh. The second dish was mixed entree plate which was tasty. The tempura oyster was great.
Next came a confit of trout which was simple but sizable. The scallop with foie gras was nice without being outstanding, while the following dish of wagyu beef cheek was the only poor dish on the night. I'm not sure if it wasn't braised for long enough or if the piece of meat I got was poor, but it was gristly and fatty all the way through, and almost inedible for me (others at the table thought it was fine).
The first dessert (optional savoury) was blue cheese ice-cream with pretzel. Tasted like frozen blue cheese, which I guess is the idea, and I loved it. Some commented it was too strong. The final dessert was a mandarin sorbet. This was a clean finish to a very nice meal.
Overall service was friendly, although we did need to ask for glasses to be refilled on a number of occasions. $80 a head, incl corkage and tip for 7 courses of food this quality is great value, and I would have no problem giving a recommendation.

Went here for a birthday dinner based on Eatability recommendation. Nice ambience, with a small number of tables and a good ratio of two serving staff.
We had the degustation 5 course menu, some excellent dishes (confit of ocean trout, grilled scallops, waygu beef cheek and the delicious dessert of the day).
Points have been deducted for the first course (tempura oyster let down by a too spicy and gluggy mayonnaise, average yakitori and an only ok taco seafood combination).
Also disappointing was a edaname beans side dish, poor quality beans overcooked.
Male waiter was great, even accommodated a non seafood member of the group, but other waitress was cute but clueless in comparison. Value for money was quite good - $170 for three.
Waygu in Crows Nest offers a similar food approach but probably does it a bit with a bit more style and more even quality.

We went for a quiet birthday dinner for two. I had not been back there for about 7 years. The food combination was exquisite, blue cheese ice cream as the cheese course, melt in the mouth Waygu beef with perfect (runny with no transparent white bits...) poach egg.
Service was very polite and attentive without being intrusive. The menu is seasonal, they just started a new season so I'll be back there in 3 months.

I recently went with some friends to Rise (04/02/12). It's tucked away in a charming corner of Darlinghurst (not far from the coke sign in Kings Cross). We were greeted warmly by the host. The Japanese decor was elegant, and seating comfortable. The room held a limited number of tables guaranteeing an intimate evening.
We opted for the 8 course omakase menu. The flavour and presentation of the Japanese fusion dishes were exquisite. We were treated to delicacies such as marinated Toothfish and slow braised pork with lotus root, as well as your slightly more traditional Wagyu beef dishes (which also had an interesting twist!).
I’m a huge dessert fan and the ‘pre-dessert’ dish and ‘dessert of the day’ appealed to both myself and my partner (he doesn’t like sweet dishes). The eight courses were very generous and had we known how much food would be presented, we would have skipped those afternoon snacks!
Finally the meal was washed down with some lovely Japanese plum wine (Umeshu).
The service was of an extremely high standard. The host (head waiter) explained each dish carefully, and was pleasantly attentive over the course of the evening, providing advice when required.
I felt that the quality of food, and innovative way it was presented is superb and I can’t wait to go back to this venue.

I really don't understand how there isn't a waiting list for Rise. Easily the best value dining experience I've had in Australia.

My wife and I recently dined at Rise to celebrate our wedding anniversary. To say that we were impressed is an understatement. The food is stunning, the service impeccable and the value for money is unbeatable.
Rise must be the best kept secret in Sydney. We opted for the 8 course degustation menu. The chef and owner Kevin's creativity with his ingredients in terms of textures and tastes is amazing.
Another reviewer mentioned the lights of cars shining in the window - this would be the only criticism I would have; however some blinds would easily address this. We will definitely be going back to Rise!
