The perfect dinner. It was at least 3 months ago we dined here, but I can still taste the flavours. Amazing value for money, I don't know how they do it. The husband and wife team behind this business deserve loads of awards and recognition. Would prefer to dine at Atelier than most other hatted restaurants.
Had an early dinner here on Saturday night as we were out to the theatre. The maitre de was extremely accommodating and made sure our meal flowed so we had just enough time for entrees and mains without being at all rushed and out by 6:50. So full points for service.
Add to that the outstanding flavours in our meal, the extremely good value for money (I have paid twice as much for food half as good), and the gorgeous ambience in the converted cottage restaurant and you couldn't really ask for more in a restaurant. The meal was fantastic- an incredible array of flavours and textures, such that I had never tasted before, and very generous serves.
We will definitely be back as there was so much more on the menu we wanted to try!!
The creativeness of the menu is outstanding, very flavoursome dishes, even better when tasted in combination. Smoked marron on pink grapefruit with foie gras mousse was a great taste sensation. Most dishes have contrasting flavours that are bolder than other European menus in town. The cheese plate is heavenly, definitely take the waiters suggestion on this one. The dessert menu is definitely worth visiting especially the souffle with whisky creme.
The service is well paced even on a busy night, the sign of a well run kitchen. But for try for a weeknight for mid week 3 course special for $59 definitely worth it.
Restaurant Atelier has a lovely location in Glebe – a cosy house that feels intimate in mid-winter. The staff are courteous, albeit not friendly. An inspiring menu, although only one vegetarian option for starter and no vegetarian mains listed on the menu (when we asked, there was a mushroom linguini available – nothing new or interesting about that option).
The tomato and goats’ cheese tarte tartin was an overall highlight – a little reminiscent of meals-on-wheels food without the cheese (thanks to sweetened tomato), but perfect with the addition of a roasted slice of goats cheese on top – a delightful array of flavours. The pheasant main was nice, if a bit chewy and requiring a better knife to cut. The duck main was particularly good and produced rich flavours. The rabbit, however, was the highlight.
Desserts were the usual array (e.g., crème brulee, souffle) with some different slants such as the black olive sauce on the crème brulee (a flavour well worth the culinary risk), souffle with whiskey anglais, and chestnuts with a caramel sauce. The value was reasonable - $59ea for three courses (mid-week special) and $8 corkage per bottle.
Overall, Restaurant Atelier has quite a bit going for it yet, while the food was good and the experience pleasant enough, it didn’t blow our minds. We might go back, but not in a hurry.
Came here for a Friday night romantic meal with my wife a couple of weeks back. Experience was marred by a corked bottle of wine. The waiter rightly took the wine away but as quickly as he did he returned with the same wine and promptly opened it without asking whether we wanted the same bottle. The new bottle was also corked, however, the waiter insisted that was just the way the wine was supposed to smell/taste.
I don't think so mate. Fine food otherwise spoilt by mediocre service. Shame as it costs nothing to return a corked bottle to the supplier.! Food was quality though, shame about the ambience, room was rather cold and waiters seemed rushed.
This was an unexpected gem. I had been assured by my gustatory afficionados that this place was unbelievably good. Their 3 course weeknight special for 60$ is one of the most reasonable prices I have come across in this overpriced city for the quality of the food, workmanship and complexity of flavours.
The scallops with the sweetbreads had great depth and body to its flavours which I love, it was great on a cold Wednesday night. I picked the pheasant tartine from the specials that night and I must admit it was a bit too salty to my liking although the flavours took me back to walking down the Parisian markets and tasting the fresh produce.
Their garlic bread with French butter was very impressive which came out under a teracotta pot and was revealed with a puff of steam. It was absolutely delicious with the zesty fruitiness of the olive oil and balsamic dip.
For the mains, we went for the Squab (game pigeon) served pink with an amazing jus that just had an explosion of flavour with one of the french Chateau wines on the list. The rabbit came with an impressive presentation but I was so preoccupied by the squab that I couldn't do justice to reviewing the rabbit but my dinner companion was thoroughly pleased.
I am usually someone who does not enjoy desserts at restaurants, they are usually overpriced and ruined by chefs trying too hard to impress. HOWEVER, Atelier was very very impressive. Their complimentary Strawberry ice chips with panacotta was so simple and divine I have already started thinking about how to replicate it, the brady creme englaise souffle was by far the best I have had in Sydney, easily beating 2 and 3 hatted restaurants. The creme brulee was also so so good but I was so so full by then.
It is definitely even worth a visit just for the desserts if you are in the neighbourhood (coming from someone who is usually NOT a sweet tooth). All that, 4 glasses of wine, 10% tip for our impeccably efficient and friendly waiter Mauritzio (i think) and I walked out very satisfied under 200$. Great ambience, light music, Loved it. Give them back a hat or two!
This restaurant offers the sort of experience which warms my heart. Beautiful, adventurous, delicious food offered without pretension or artifice, in simple but cosy surroundings. Everyone at Restaurant Atelier obviously loves what they do and take pride in it.
Dining together we had two entrees (scallop with sweetbreads and ocean trout with foie gras), two mains (rabbit and duck), two desserts (caramel soufflé and chocolate delice) plus wine, salad and bread, and we made it out the door for about $200 in total. Well worth it for food of this calibre and a special night out - will definitely return sometime soon.
Food: Most of the dishes had so many different flavours on the plate, not sure if this is a good thing at it didn't always match. Also the scallops, rabbit, squab were all very salty.
Ambience: Temperature inside was like being in a cool room, everyone was wearing jackets and jumpers. Service: Waiters were friendly when we could find one, and this was a quiet night.
Value: Cost about $60 per person. You do get some more exotic foods (pheasant, pigeon, rabbit, venison) but there is better tasting food to be had for the money in Sydney. Best Dish: Truffled Linguine.
We tried the three course midweek special. Amazingly good food and excellent service. Agree with the comments that deserve more than one hat. Will be back soon!
This has to be one of the most brilliant restaurants in Sydney. We have been going since Atelier was in Newtown, and have NEVER been disappointed. Wonderful, generous French-inspired food, considered, knowledgable and non-intrusive service is very hard in this too big for its boots town, but Atelier always comes up trumps!
I recommend throwing caution to the wind and going the degustation with wines to match. You will not be let down! I love this place so much I proposed to my now wife there!!
