Overview of Red Mint
Red Mint, situated a stone’s throw from the CBD and Darling Harbour, is a beautifully appointed Vietnamese restaurant bar, suitable for an intimate dinner for two or for dinner after work with friends.
Serving a combination of authentic and modern Vietnamese cuisine, the ambience created by the lanterns and candles creates a warm and stylish atmosphere that is unforgettably Asian.
Unwind and relax in our contemporary settings whilst pampering your palate with inspired food and drinks.
Loved the look of this little Vietnamese in Pyrmont, very stylish, minimal décor. Eight of us had a birthday dinner here and shared 7 or 8 mains. All dishes were devoured with the exception of the garlic prawns, which were not pleasant and both servings were left well alone. The hot spicy chicken was my favourite, closely followed by the beef cubes. Not the cheapest around due to proximity to CBD but you get what you pay for. Great place, great food.
I came here for lunch as I had a craving for Vietnamese food and was quite disappointed. The servings are fairly small and the food is nothing special. Most Vietnamese restaurants in Cabramatta or Bankstown would be better than this in terms of authenticity, menu variety and value for money.
On a positive note, they had was the make your own fresh spring rolls which is not a common menu item. Needless to say, the following week I went to a Vietnamese restaurant in Chinatown to satisfy my craving.
I first visited Red Mint soon after it opened (a couple of years ago now). The food was beyond bad and no one asked, or even seemed to notice, why we had literally barely touched our mains. However, after reading the positive reviews on this site, I though that, perhaps, Red Mint is under new management etc. and decided to give it another chance.
I ordered a cocktail on arrival and found it to be enjoyable and was optimistic for the rest of the evening. However, as soon as we received our meals (2 entrees and a main) I realised that the food, while not quite as 'bad' as the last time, was still fairly bland and uninteresting. My husband and I ordered a glass of Pinot Noir each to have with the main. As soon as the wine arrived, we could tell there was something wrong, simply from the colour, let alone the smell.
We both had a small sip (to make sure before sending it back) and the wine had turned so badly, it resembled what I can only describe as fizzy vinegar. We called over the waitress and explained that the wine had turned, would she be able to open a new bottle. I asked her to taste it if she doubted us, to which she responded "that's ok, I wouldn't know anyway" (!!!).
She took our vinegar-wine away and came back with 2 new glasses from a fresh bottle and informed us that she had spoken to the other waitress, who is actually the one who opened our original bottle and can confirm that it was 'only opened earlier this week' (!!!)
Our main, a crispy chicken dish, would have been acceptable if it was a $5 take away lunch special from the local asian take away, however, for a $26 meal at a restaurant, was pretty appalling. Sydney has some fantastic eateries, however, Red Mint is not one of them!
Went there last night, we were feeling like Asian food, so we chose this place after reading so many good reviews.
I am not a big connoisseur of Asian food, so I can't tell if the dishes were truly Vietnamese style. I can say that the food was really good, very fresh, good quality. As an entree we went for the wraps, we chose the pork, it's quite an experience if you are a beginner with this cuisine, you have to fill your own wrap and for me wasn't that easy! I liked that, while my boyfriend didn't so much.
I had the chicken with capsicum and oyster sauce, and I didn't enjoy it that much, I found it too sweet, but it's my own taste, I should have probably ordered something else. My boyfriend had the squid, and they were beautiful. Service was really good, the waitress explained us how to "handle" the wrap and she made sure that we enjoyed our experience there.
Despite the red light and the lanterns I found the ambience a bit cold. Maybe the high ceiling and the essential furniture gave me the impression. A place that deserves a go. They also have $10 menu for lunch from Thursday to Saturday, good value for a meal like this.
Would have to agree with the last review, to a point. Yes, the ambience is not sweep you of your feet, however, the lighting is good and the acoustics are not. The travesty that is poor restaurant lighting and having to shout over other patrons was absent, not an issue here, we loved the light diffusing red paper lanterns.
Soft shell was great. The food is pricey, yet wonderfully fresh and vibrant, with the service attentive and very friendly. Even with our entertainment book discount, there are many other BYO Vietnamese joints in Sydney that do it cheaper and frankly just as well, unfortunately, we are unlikely to go back. Purely based on value.
After reading the good reviews for this restaurant I decided to go here for a nice vietnamese meal in a restaurant which I hoped had some atmosphere and great tasting food for the price. We have been to a few vietnamese restaurants both in Australia and in Vietnam. Unfortunately, while the service was good, all of the dishes (fresh rice paper rolls, duck betel leaves, curry and squid) were lacking flavour.
I've had better tasting meals in much cheaper restaurants. The website gives an impression of great ambience, but this too was lacking. Wouldn't go back, there are too many other better restaurants to go to!
We went for a nice romantic dinner to celebrate our anniversary and we were very satisfied with our night. When we arrived we were starving and they promptly brought out the duck leaves that were absolutely delicious! We then had them again when we ordered the shared entree. We both ordered cocktails and they were lovely and fruity.
For mains we had the blue swimmer crab and the crsipy chicken, the blue swimmer crab was yummy yet very hard work, as crabs usually are, and reminded me why I don't normally order crab and why I won't be in the future. The sauce was great but ended up half way up your arms by the end. The crispy chicken was great, really tasty amazing flavour. The place started off empty for a Saturday at the end was pretty full, it was spacious enough that we didn't feel overwhelmed. Great place for classy Vietnamese food!
A few of us went here on a saturday night, it is very spacious inside with lots of room. Service is also very good, but best of all the food was fresh and tasty!
From the rice paper rolls for entree to the chilli mussels all was full of the right flavours, whilst tasting very fresh. Other dishes we got to highly recommend are the peppered scotch fillet cubes, curry chicken and squid. The soft shell crab was also ok, but I'm not a big fan of deep fried food.
Food was very good. We tried the share plate for starters, excellent, a bit of everything and very fresh. For mains we shared the salt and pepper squid, and the crispy chicken. Both very good but I must mention that the chicken was fairly rich so only try if you're up for an intense experience!
Service was sharp to start off with but as the restaurant got busy it became overly slow with us trying on several occasions to get the attention of the waiters, although still friendly. Value was outstanding, this is fresh, high quality food at fair prices, especially for Sydney. Worth a try!
