Bistro is hidden on the first floor, currently a mix of Asian (Thai) and low-key pub-grub (Burgers, F&C etc). But is cheap++ Classic 1950s style decor, with little updating over the last half-century. Can go outside on the deck, Ok if the traffic noise doesn't blast you back in. Get drinks (limited list) from the bar below but they're at pub prices!

Came here for lunch with a few workmates, they had a few specials on and no one there. The food took longer than expected to come out though despite this. The ambience is hard to give a rating, some parts of the floor screach, some furniture is old but the toilets are the newest part of the hotel. Its bigger than I expected but there is a good view onto the street which I really liked. My workmates liked the food more than me and there are plenty of options, from pub food to thai food.

The only pretentiousness you'll find here is from some of the customers! Nice, historic relaxed pub not trying to be anything other than what it is (others in Balmain please take note). The bistro upstairs is what staple pub food used to be all about. Have a couple of schooners, you're hungry, you don't need extravagance. Just fresh, well cooked, simple schnitzels, pasta, steak or burger options served with a smile and chat from the bistro contractors, not staff. $15 a head, including a wonderful green salad. Going again!
