Great tapas restaurant in heart of Darlinghurst, great food, great value. We ordered albondigas (veal and pork meatballs), chicken and ham croquettes, calamar frito, garlic prawns and patatas bravas. We dropped off the octopus on advice of our lovely, personable waiter and the kitchen. We ordered churros for dessert even though we were very full. We ordered Sangria.
The staff were attentive, the food came out in good intervals. Raquels knows what they're doing, highly reccommended!

I waited a while for service and longer for the bill. It was very cramped and noisy on a Friday night. The food was average. I've had better Spanish in Sydney.

Cannot fault anything. Raquels was graceful and kept an eye on everything. The food was amazing. The only complaint I have is my Hussyband wouldn't let me order a second litre of sangria.
PS: Cute new waiter lad, you are gorgeous and looked after us wonderfully.

We attended a function here the other night and I must say the majority were not impressed with not only the service but the quality of food. A waitress supplied us with drinks to our table and had the audacity to serve half a beer in a bottle and then question us! In addition to this, I found along with many others in group (on the set banquet menu) that the seafood was well and truly overcooked and covered in tomato based sauce as a disguise.
Given the prawns had black heads they certainly lacked freshness. Servings for group booking are disappointingly small as we all thought at the end we had only got through the appetisers to only find out that was the end of the set menu. I would not recommend to anyone.
Response from Management:
Dear Petkovd,
I find your comment surprisingly contrary to overall comments we receive, on the banquet as on our a la carte menu.
I am totally confident the quality of our food is exceptionally high; all of our food is prepared and presented with the utmost respect and to the best or our ability. I have no doubt that at times food is slightly over or under cooked or seasoned but we have high standards and are very watchful, to ensure this is not a regular occurrence
We use Aussie Local Prawns for the Paella and selected prawn dishes such as the Bbq prawns and the Guacamole prawns, and imported prawns for garlic and chilli prawn dishes.
The heads on the Local Prawns do go black very quickly almost immediately after defrosting them unless you pack them in ice, (you may be aware that 99% of Australian Prawns are snap frozen on the trawlers – fresh unfrozen prawns would carry a hefty price tag due to transport costs and low shelf life and would be unaffordable for most people) Because of the high volume of prawns we use we let them defrost in the fridge, hence the slight discolouration, which you will also see even at the Sydney Fish Markets but there is no question of the freshness of the prawn.
I may agree with you, that the service can be hit and miss depending on several factors, (how busy we are, what intervals between tables, new waiters etc) but no more than most other restaurants would experience given similar circumstances. However, I do doubt that any waiter here would have served ½ bottle of beer its clear that there was faulty top and that the waiter was not aware, the bottle was replaced immediately. And he/she certainly would not have disrespected any customer in any way.
Our Banquet Menu is varied, plentiful and value driven. I do not agree with your comment that the portions were small and unsatisfying. We are well known for our generous servings and the Banquet with over 9 courses (including paella, garlic breads, salad and dessert) is a huge meal often too much for most people.
In over 30 years that we have been operating, I have only heard that there was not enough food at the most 4 times and usually following a confrontation with the table involved ie: after having refused to serve any more alcohol when it is clear they have had enough in accordance with our RSA limitations.. Or more common still when they have been asked to consider other diners and keep the noise level down a bit. (Playing scull drink games and banging beer bottles on the table is an act that would not be permitted even at a local pub)
We are very sorry you had such a dissatisfying experience here.

We have been living overseas, recently a death in the family brought us home, and back to Raquels where we had celebrated so many significant dinners and celebrations with the deceased in the past.
It was wonderful to see Raquel and her family doing so well. They have done a marvelous job keeping in touch with the continuous maturity of present day Spanish cuisine. We wish Raquels all the well deserved best and hope to see you again in the near future. Thank you all for a wonderful evening.

Went to Raquels on a Sunday night and they had the Tapa train service that night. This is where they bring around tapas to each table and offer it to you. Similar to Chinese Yumcha. It was fun and made the evening enjoyable. The actual food could have been a bit better and been more options. Worth a try though.
Response from Management:
Dear Pizzamaster,
As far as I am aware Raquel’s is the first to introduce this concept certainly in Australia, and have not seen or heard of it anywhere else in the world. Raquel’s was also the first to influence and campaign the Tapa experience in Australia over 30 years ago.
As the Tapa Train concept is still in the untried area we learn as we go. We do provide over 30 Tapas and recently have provided a list especially for the early and late diners who do not have access to the main stream of the selections.
To keep the food at its maximum freshness levels we start of slow and wind down to avoid wastage as anything that comes back to the kitchen is NOT reheated or rehashed.
If the “food could have been better” we will certainly pay more attention to this thought. We make every effort to ensure our food is fresh and tasty.
The Tapa Train has been active now for the past 6 weeks and every Sunday there have been positive improvements within the development of our concept.
Thank you very much for your positive feedback and trust we can leave a better impression on your next visit.

We were having a drink at the Columbian hotel and suddenly realized we were starving, we looked across and saw that Raquels was getting ready to open. It was 4.45pm, even though they do not open till 5pm a hairy chested waiter with his shirt unbuttoned graciously welcomed us to take a seat. He promptly buttoned up his shirt and handed us menus and offered us drinks while he finished setting up.
He recommended the Barramundi Fillets and the 'big plate of oysters' which was exactly what we felt like. The prawns with the coriander chilli dressing were spotless fresh and the John Dory with the basil and olive butter just melted in our mouths. An hour after we arrived the place was packed and we hardly saw our waiter again. Great food and very charming waiter.

I LOVE tapas and really enjoyed finding this restaurant by accident. We went with about 16 people and the staff were extremely helpful and up front about the food, esp as we didn't go the banquet option. I tasted about 4 tapas before I was full, servings are generous and packed with flavour. Loved it.

We haven’t been here in ages till a friend told us about the Tapa Train Sunday so we decided to check it out. No sooner had we sat down the food started arriving at our table, there was so many different selections, lots of the usual fried squids, garlic prawns and vego dishes as well as tripe, rabbit (just like my mother used to make - delicious) and Fried Pigs Ears! (Apparently a Madrid specialty we chose NOT to try even though they looked crispy and appetizing) We had a veritable feast and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Highly recommend.

Like a lot of restaurants, I think it pays to go early in the week. I dined here on Tuesday with two friends. The food was fresh and tasty, the service was very good and the waiter was extremely pleasant, mind you, being a Tuesday it was not over crowded.
