Absolutely love coming to this restaurant. The food is great. The view is amazing especially at night. We have eaten here on several occasions and have never been let down. We were even fortunate enough to have the place to ourselves for a little while, thanks to a mini storm. We have always had great service from this restaurant, even on busy nights. Love the salt and pepper squid. It just melts in your mouth. Would recommend anytime.
Similar to others we just didn't get the service that one would expect. One of our meals was not ordered from the kitchen and therefore the rice my wife had been holding off on waiting was of no use and cold etc. It seems that English is not priority but it is very hard to explain simple issues.
Loved the location, heaters and table cloths the one meal I got was ok by our standard for Chinese which we have often...all up a bit frustrating and my wife was hungry going into the movies so all up not so good.
I'm so shocked at the poor review written by LissaOz. I've eaten at East upwards of 20 times at lunch and dinner, dining sometimes casually with friends and other times with clients for work. The service has never been anything short of fantastic, the ambience is great and the food delicious. Not the best value chinese in town but take a look around you when you sit outside with the harbour bridge in one direction and the opera house in the other. One of my favourite restaurants in Sydney.
Dinner before opera and first time at TECR. The food was excellent and service was most attentive, meeting our need to eat good meal in an hour. Would strongly recommend.
Contrary to a poor review I read prior to having an extended lunch at this restaurant, I found it to be of good value. The service was very good to begin with and fell off dramatically when it was obviouse we were going to be there for a long while.
The food was good without being over spiced or salty; just good flavour and well cooked. The view is brilliant. It was a cold day but the heaters kept us bare armed while a mass of people hurried past a back drop of the harbour bridge and ferries.
We had a show to go to the Opera House for 8.00 and decided to eat here beforehand. It was in a great location with ocean views, prices seemed better than some places and the menu seemed good. Anyhow, could not have gone to anywhere worse it would seem. Never have I experienced such bad service at any place I have dined.
We ordered a drink and had to wait around 15 minutes for them to take our order and once it became apparent that we were not ordering the expensive seafood dishes, the service just went extremely downhill. The guy next to us arrived about fifteen/twenty minutes after us and ordered lobster so of course his meal came out ahead of ours. He was asked a number of times during the course of his meal if there was anything he needed, was the food ok, more drink etc while we were not approached once (I had to literally call out to whatever waiter was around to get any service).
My boyfriend's beef and blackbean was brought out along with rice. He had long since eaten his by the time mine arrived (about twenty minutes later). Oh also feel I should mention were quite rude about serving us, plonked plates down and walked off when deliver his meal, all the while asking the other guy next to us for anything he needed / wanted. They put my meal down and pronounced it to be satay vegetables while it had lots of beef clearly on the plate and before I could say anything, they were gone.
I had to wait a further ten minutes before I could flag down a waiter and I have to admit by this stage I was getting quite annoyed but I was not rude. I told the waiter that what I had been given was not satay vegetables and he went to take the order away without a word. I asked him to cancel the order because I did not have time to wait nearly another hour for another meal. Then I wanted to ask for bill but couldn't do that either, gone before I could.
I then called out to another waiter five minutes later and asked for the bill and was told that would be fine, be there shortly. We waited for another ten minutes or so and nothing, the guy was still serving on the floor and had not even attempted to get the bill or ask anyone to arrange it before he disappeared and five minutes later, still nothing. I was extremely stressed by this point because we had twenty minutes until the show so I called out for another waiter to get the bill which he presented five minutes later.
Overall, extremely unimpressed to have paid $35.00 for one meal, two rices (which didn't need since I didn't get my main meal) and the service was just beyond irritating. I know we didn't order any of the expensive dishes but it was really uncalled for. I ended up grabbing a packet of chips after the show for dinner. Would never recommend eating here to anyone.
I was so impressed with this place! Especially walking from restaurant to restaurant trying to find a reasonably priced place to eat. Not only was is fairly priced but the food was excellent!! If you're looking for a night out with great food and priceless views but you don't want to spend too much...this is your place!
Great restuarant, a lot more reasonable that we expected considering the location. The menu is extensive and very different... we really enjoyed the steamed veg dumplings and the salt & pepper eggplant. great for lunch on a pleasant afternoon!
I know its Circular quay and the views are nice but the food I found to be expensive for what it is!! The food is no different from other chinese restaurants that I've been too. Its hard for me to recommend this place just for the food and the prices, but the views you can't buy!!
We left the Opera House after the ballet and strolled along to East Circular Quay on a very pleasant evening. The waiter at East was happy to give us a table for two, where we watched a cruise ship slide away as we waited for our meal.
We had ordered steamed salmon with ginger and shallots, stir fried kangaroo with chilli and herbs, stir fried spinach and garlic and some steamed rice. This proved to be too much food - the serves of salmon and kangaroo were very generous. The salmon fell into bite sized pieces at the touch of a chopstick. The steaming had preserved its flavour, which was enhanced by the fresh shreds of ginger. MM thought the mint flavour predominated in the kangaroo dish - I thought the balance of flavour was just right. The meat was tender, lightly cooked and juicy.
The spinach and rice were good.
We each had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. I am not familiar with some of the wines on the list - it seemed to me that the mark up was quite high, but that is waterfront real estate for you. The bill came to a tad over $100, fair enough for the generous servings, in this area.
P.S. I know that kangaroo is not a traditional Chinese dish, because they don't have them in China - every other creature seems to make it into the wok, so why not kangaroo if it is available?
