Overview of Pony Lounge & Dining

Located in the Rocks on the corner of Argyle Street and Sydney’s oldest cobblestone laneway, Kendall Lane, designer Michael McCann transformed the historic former bond warehouse into a unique dining space. The interior features a dramatic open kitchen with pony hide clad kitchen counter, heritage brick walls and commissioned woven art hangings on a mesh-clad side wall. The restaurant is intimate with chocolate tones and moody timber and features an outdoor deck with a stunning communal dining table and lounge bar.

Dining here was a very memorable experience. Stylish fitout, attentive service and excellent food. Duck lovers might find the crisp-pressed duck the best they've ever had, and the twice cooked beef rib on the bone is a carnivore's delight.

As it was a balmy evening, we were offered bench-seating at the outdoor communal table, but opted for a cosier table indoors on the infinitely more comfortable Eames dining chairs. Even here though you are almost rubbing elbows with diners at the next table. Pretty pricy, but you get what you pay for! Looking forward to returning to try their smaller tapas-style menu.

Had dinner on saturday night with a large group of people. The staff were organised and attentive. We had the set menu for $65 and I could not fault anything. From the shared starter, the way my request for 'blue' steak was cooked to perfection and the beautifully presented dessert. I will definitely revisit this place.

Had a business lunch here, it was me and 4 others. The place had no ambience and there was no service at all. Waiting staff interested in speaking to the cooks and the other staff members. Food was ok, nothing special and too pricey ($$$) for what is presented to you. Wine list is average, lots of other better venues elsewhere. Will not go back.

I took a friend who was visiting from the US here for lunch and what a great choice that turned out to be. While there is no view of the harbour from Pony (its tucked away in the Rocks), the atmosphere of sitting outside on the terrace on a sunny day is just lovely.

The food is reasonably well priced, although $43 for a dozen oysters shocked me a little at first. Mains tend to be in the $28-$35 category mostly. I had a beautiful marinated spatchcock with beans and kipfler potatoes. The spatchcock had been cooked in their iron bark oven which imparts the most beautiful smokey flavour to the food. My friend went for the easy choice of Prawn Linguine with pancetta and peas in a light white wine sauce, an excellent choice.

For dessert I had the simple Lemon Tart (one of my all time favourite desserts), divine!. A real palate cleaner and a great way to top off an amazing meal. While it worked out at $110 a head with tip, I would definitely recommend this place and say not only is the food great, the service is spot on, and for what you get (3 courses and a bottle of decent wine to share) it's value for money in my book.

You have to go at least once. I'll definitely be going back again however.

I came down from Queensland and found a magazine which had an advertisement and review about Pony, after reading it I had to go there. One of the most memorable meals I have had! Will be going there whenever I am down!

I went there last week with a few friends. A bit disappointed with the quality of my steak which was very chewy (I did not complain to the waiter, just thought it was a one off thing. It was my second visit, the place is decent, good location. Great spot before heading off to Argyle...

I like this place. My dining partner hated it, but I like it. The food is delicious, with interesting flavours and lovely design. I love the vibe of the place, although the tables are quite close to each other, so you sometimes feel like people are listening in to your conversation. Staff were friendly, but nothing over the top. Pretty pricey, but the food is worth it. Although $7 for water is a bit rich! I'd recommend for the food and vibe.

Arranged a booking for 2 at 7 pm on a Monday (5th Jan 2009) via email and received confirmation 24 hrs later. Called again an hour before booking and added a 3rd person and requested outdoor seat if possible. Was no problem and we had great seats in middle of communal outdoor table. Short queue outside as several people had 7 pm bookings but were looked after about ten seconds after reaching the front.

We had a friendly and attentive waitress, asked if we would like bread and olives while we ordered, and if we would like Sparkling, still or tap water. Ordered from A la carte menu, shared entree's (Seared sirloin was the favourite, but note that it is basically rare steak thinly sliced from seared beef and marinated but even our guest who was not used to unusual foods (e.g. rare steak) loved it). I had the oven roasted snapper, which was delicious. Side was roasted butternut pumpkin that we ordered after mains arrived as forgot earlier, arrived half way through meal which was as anticipated from late ordering.

Pumpkin was a mix of perfect and slightly underdone but not enough to consider a problem). Had Trifle as dessert and really liked it (despite no alcohol in it!). Would recommend as a laid back atmosphere, good food without pretentious service. Mid range price and great location.
