Overview of Pony Lounge & Dining Neutral Bay

Grabbing its reins and galloping across the Harbour Bridge, Pony Dining has set up camp on the North Side in Sydney’s latest dining destination, Neutral Bay.

The younger colt to the original Pony Dining has a more intimate feeling than it’s uber-glam sibling. Seating only 50 guests, the interior has been designed by the highly acclaimed Mathew Darwin, whose portfolio boasts establishments such as Sydney’s Toko and Jimmy Liks.

The focus of the restaurant is an extraordinary ceiling instillation with 5 kilometers of timber slats that undulates through the long lean space, encapsulating a private dining room, the main dining room and a cocktail lounge. The overall impression is moody, sensual and inviting.

“We want Pony Neutral Bay to be the go to place for a casual drink and a few shared plates in the cocktail lounge, feast on grilled meats in the dining room or celebrate in the private dining room,” enthuses Damian Heads, executive chef and part owner.

Wow, what a let down. This restaurant is punching way above it's own weight! With swish styling and prices to match, we were very excited to try Pony but were so disappointed.

Small plates of crispy prawns were fine, but nothing great. I can't even recall what the second one was as it too was mediocre.

I actually sent my main of scallop tortellini back as it was dry, thick, cold and with not a spot of sauce or dressing on it? The manager apologised and organised a different meal. I had to go through 2 clueless waitresses first.

They did give me a complimentary dessert which was nice. $130 later... Choose somewhere else!

Love this sleek sister restaurant of Pony at the Rocks, beautiful lounge with equally gorgeous desserts, we tried their hazelnut parfait and were blown away by the glorious taste. Their vanilla creme brulee was also quite delectable.

I went to Pony for dinner with my husband on Friday night, it was my first time there and we will definetly be going back. We shared some small plates to start, the seared sirloin was a stand out and I highly recommend it. For main I had the pork cuttlet wich was cooked perfectly. Service was great and the waiters were very helpful and accommodating. A great find!

I love this restaurant. The food is simple, but really tasty, and I always feel like I want to eat what is on my plate. I look through the menu and can always easily find heaps of dishes I want to eat. We always order a few share plates then we each have mains. we love it and go there pretty much every month. They know our names, and which wine we like to drink. A great local.

Ordered 4 small plates as entrees and 4 mains. The small plates were fine but nothing special and the mains were hit and miss. I ordered the pork cutlet which turned out to be 90% fat. It was literally inedible. To be fair they did accept that it was poor quality and took it off the bill but I was still left hungry.

Also, surely the kitchen staff would have known the meat was all fat when cooking it?! The other mains were ok, but overpowered by the char/ burnt flavour from the chargrill. Service was very slow, we waited ages between entree and main. With so many other good restaurants in Sydney, I can't see any reason to go back.

We arrived for dinner and were served very quickly on a Thursday night, we ordered three starter plates which came very quickly, the duck pate was fantastic, the fritata was nice but we could have easily made the same thing at home, and the chipolatas were very average sausages served with mustard, it looked like it was from a jar.

Then the main meals came Very quickly after, so quickly that we had not even had time to finish our first drinks, and we had ordered the $42 steaks which were 150 day aged with bernaise sauce, we ordered medium but they were well done and burnt to the crisp on the outside, leaving a really bad taste in our mouths.

We couldn't pay the bill quicker to get out of there, paying $42 for a main meal which leaves a bad taste in your mouth is not somewhere we will be going back to!

Simple fresh clean flavours. Some of the small plate dishes work really well, however, having a wood-fired oven was the only saviour of a poorly prepared lamb rump dish and will someone please teach them what a roast potato is ($9)? Service was quite good, fit out is attractive with good ambience, spoiled by painful noise levels. Would not dine here again.

Best for small plates, desserts and a drink.

We visited Pony at Neutral Bay for breakfast, our second visit to the group after our dinner at Pony The Rocks earlier this year.

The food was flawless and innovative. We definitely found the dishes to be a step up from the typical big breakfast served at many cafes in the north shore. The Spanish omelette was perfectly seasoned and well balanced by the rocket leaves, while the toasted brioche worked perfectly with the poached berries and custard curd. Service felt slightly rushed considered the need of a slow Sunday breakfast.

I have dined at Pony on three occasions and love the feel of the place. Like previous reviewers I have found the service to be erratic and on one occasion non existent.

Main menu is good, but nothing special. The small plates of tapas/nibbles are great, however, I struggled to find a main that jumped out at me. Wine list is solid if a little overpriced. Best to go for drinks and nibbles.
