My wife and I have been going here for a couple of years (mostly for a Friday lunch, with few other guests the noise levels are low). The duck, the deep fried pork and the salad are terrific. It's hard to go past the "specials board". Nice Thai waitresses. Main issues for me are the creeping prices. The chef went back to Thailand a month or two ago, so let's see what happens to the food. It has been "Uber-Thai" so far, not just for Balmain.
When we arrived, my heart sank. The place looked empty and the few diners that were there were on the point of leaving. So within half an hour, we were virtually on our own. By now it was 7.45 pm on a Sunday night and I’d all but resigned myself to us being the only diners.
But I needn’t have worried. This place obviously has a following despite its somewhat out-of-the-way position at the end of Darling St, because after that, there was a steady stream of people. In its previous life, Pom must have been a smart residence, as the original sandstone walls are clearly visible. In a way, thankfully it never filled up entirely as acoustics would be nightmarish on a busy night, with stone floors and wooden tables packed close together.
And talking of tables, they’re small, cramped and oddly arranged in a type of schoolroom formation, so we found ourselves starring directly at the next table. The dividing wall in the middle of the restaurant has a kind of Berlin Wall effect, where you can hear but not see what’s happening on the other side.
My heart dropped for a second time when I saw the menu (prices around $24 for a main) but then my dining companion pointed out that she had seen a notice on the door offering a 15% discount for Sunday diners. That kept our bill for four down to a reasonable $110. For that we had one starter, four mains, rice all round, two drinks and two coffees. Pom is licensed and BYO.
My lemongrass chicken was fresh and full of spicy flavours. The meat in my partner’s stir fried was tender and finely cut up. Portions looked huge when they arrived but the food was so delicious that we made short shrift of it all and by the end there wasn’t a morsel left on anyone’s plate.
Service was a treat: fast, friendly and efficient. And best of all, no one rushes you out the door here when you’ve finished your meals. Toilets are clean, well-provisioned and clearly signposted. We found easy parking about 100 metres down the road. You’ll find Pom, opposite the London Hotel near the corner of Ann Street.
I had an enjoyable dinner here recently. Prior to my outing I had no idea what the restaurant looked like and we were meeting up with our cousins from Germany so it had to be good otherwise we would be pretty embarrassed. Based on reviews here we decided to chance this as the restaurant was between Glebe (where the cousins were staying) and Pymble where we live. Anyway to cut a long story short, the restaurant was quite attractive - sandstone walls, dark timber furniture and pleasant obliging staff. The food was delightfully presented and tasted fine. All dishes were an improvement upon the usual Thai fare - unique and creative. Recommended for a nice evening out with friends.
Awesome thai food and service. Went here with friends on a recent Sat night, the restaurant was busy but the staff didn't let that affect their excellent service and menu knowledge. Only negative is some of the dishes/specials are a little pricey, other than that this place is great.
Giles French is absolutely right, this is the best Thai restaurant in Balmain and given the competition on Darling Street it gas to be good! We went with friends on a Thursday night and the place was "comfortably busy". The masaman lamb was delightful as was the steamed whole barramundi with ginger and coriander on the specials board. Great food, great value.
The best Thai in Balmain easily. Good friendly service. Generous portions. Only negative that needs to be addressed is the noise level. Very very noisy place on the Saturday we came so if you are planning a romantic dinner then you'd best beware.
